N.A.N.Y. 2009 / Re: NANY 2009 Release: Trout (audio player)
« Last post by Deozaan on October 30, 2010, 03:05 PM »
Can you make it so that Total time, Time elapsed, and Time Remaining (for individual tracks) don't show the number of hours? Considering most songs are about 3-5 minutes, I think having an extra set of 00s is pointless and slightly confusing.

Even if you do have tracks that are 60+ minutes long, it seems to me it would be better to show them as number of minutes rather than hh:mm:ss.

I've also been experiencing a strange issue. It seems like whenever I first start up Trout, if I double click an item in the list to play it, it won't play. Then when I get a song playing, double-click-to-play works fine after that.

Don't most people have people in their contact list like "Mom" "Dad" "Wife", etc?

Kind of makes "ICE" redundant.

Those Flight of the Conchords were great! I watched a lot of their videos and wasted a lot of time. Thanks!

And thanks to App for pointing this gem out to me on IRC:

Watch this first:

Then this:

Anyone know who those white guys (who look like twins) that are dancing around in suits are? I think they may be the guys responsible for this. EDIT: I found the original YouTube video and changed the link above to it.

If you want the audio or video for yourself, as I did, simply use Dirpy.

If all of the PCs involved got in the same Hamachi network, you'd have a VPN with static IPs. Probably won't happen on a server though.  :-\

Halloween? It is, basically, a disgusting way to teach children how to go begging, combined with trying to blackmail them ("give us candy or we'll do a oh-so-funny harm to you").

That's now how my family did it. We were very polite (making sure to say thank you) and never begged. If a household doesn't want to participate they just leave the porch lights off. Though the customary greeting is "Trick or Treat!" we were never instructed to, nor did we come to the conclusion ourselves that this meant we needed to extort candy on the threat of a prank. In fact, one time I was told to perform a trick (in the sense of a dog performing a trick) in order to get a treat.

I'd think that the traditional celebration of Christmas (aka Giftmas) or birthdays in the USA causes more children to beg than Halloween.

When talking about basic stuff not working, I can't believe it but, I tried to bookmark a page with Chromium using Control-D.  Nuthin'.

Hmm... I just accidentally bookmarked a page when I pressed Ctrl-D instead of Ctrl-F. If we hadn't had this discussion I would have had no idea why the page suddenly decided to bookmark itself.

Take a digital picture of your own profile. Then use InkScape and trace it and fill it with black. Then you don't need to worry about copyrights. ;)

Living Room / Re: Interesting Emoticons
« Last post by Deozaan on October 22, 2010, 06:32 PM »
Okay, so, many years ago I was using MSN Messenger and Yahoo! IM and I didn't like the stupid emoticon graphics that replaced the ASCII emoticons (though now that I think about it, I think DC uses the Y!IM graphics) so I changed my default smiley emoticon around:

(c:

Someone noticed that it looks kind of like Ziggyw, though not so much when I've made it bold and increased the font size.

For a while I stopped using IM and now I only use Google Talk so I've grown out of the habit of using the Ziggymoticon. :P

Good post Deo :)

I was worried that by posting what I did I may have started an argument/debate that I didn't really want to finish (I hate conflicts and contention!). You make good points as well. Thank you (and everyone else, of course) for respecting me enough (even though/if you disagree) to remain cordial and polite.

This is a great example of why I love DC. :-*

Living Room / Re: How to avoid paying taxes and save billions
« Last post by Deozaan on October 22, 2010, 04:11 PM »
First of all let me say that it's not my intent for this post to be political. While the subject of taxation is by nature political, since some political entity must enforce the taxation, what I write below is just my opinion on a person having a right to keep their own property.

... I suspect you've never lived near the poverty line, if you can so casually disagree - and yet agree

I don't know what is considered the "poverty line" where I live. I've lived on what I consider very little compared to those in my local area, but I think that's all relative. I think in the USA what is officially considered poverty is still very much a luxury compared to some other parts of the world.

[EDIT]You got me wondering, so I looked it up. According to this chart here I've lived very near the poverty line (including below it) for a few years of the past decade. Thankfully that hasn't been the case for the past couple of years. I guess I'm moving up in the world. ;)[/EDIT]

I've pretty much always had a place to sleep, food to eat, and usually even a junker car to drive. I don't earn much, but I'm frugal and live on what I have. I don't use credit cards, I don't have car payments, and in a few months I'll have my student loan paid off and be completely debt free, which in a manner of thinking will make me one of the richest people in America.

If I continue to live in such a frugal manner and over my lifetime save up a million dollars, why should I have to pay more on taxes and social services than someone who lived lavishly and irresponsibly on credit and debt their whole life? I feel no moral obligation to prevent people from having to face the consequences of their actions and behavior.

On the other hand, I know that life isn't fair and not everyone chooses to live in the circumstances they find themselves in. That's why I personally donate more than 10% of my gross income to charitable causes (of my choice!) every month, even in times when I'm not sure I'll have enough money to make it. I don't say that to brag. What I'm saying is that I am doing what I can (and choose) with what I have, rather than demanding others do what I want with their money. If I had billions of dollars, I could certainly do a lot more. So it's my responsibility to be true to that, and if I ever get a billion dollars (which I'd surely have to earn, mind you) I'd better do a lot more than what I'm doing now.

I suppose my whole point is that individuals are generally much better stewards of their own property (money) they had to work hard for than someone else's that was just given to them. So why not let them keep as much of it as possible to use as they see fit, rather than having someone else lord over them telling them how and when it must be used?

A flat 10% is not equitable as the people with more money have greater responsability and should be contributing more, and what the poor have often doesn't cover their needs.

I disagree with this statement. 10% is equitable because everyone is paying an equal percentage. Now, obviously if it costs $500 a month to pay for cost of living then 10% is going to dip a lot more into the person's income who makes $500 a month than the person making $50,000/mo.

And I also don't think it's the government's job to take from the "rich" to give to the "poor." Let the rich be charitable to the poor if they choose to. The rich are not necessarily responsible for the poor just because they have more money.

If I happen to have more money than someone else through my own sheer luck, due diligence, etc., why should I be punished and have my money forcibly taken away from me and given to someone else who through their own bad luck, wastefulness, etc., lost (or did not gain) money?

The rich have just as much a right to their own money as the poor. If it is not so, then that is when it becomes an inequitable society.

I forget about stars in address bars because nobody else uses it.

Firefox uses a star in the address bar, too.

As someone who has never used Ctrl-D before, that shortcut doesn't even make sense to me. There's no D in "bookmark."

Of course, there's no J in "Downloads" either but I still remember that Ctrl-J brings up the Downloads list. So I guess I just contradicted myself. <shrugs>

We definitely need taxes to be simple. Something incredibly simple and stupid such as 10% for EVERYONE would make it so easy to make sure everyone and everything paid properly.

But that's coming from someone who doesn't know much about how the tax system works.

Nuthin' about bookmarks!! I had to "Add Page" in the bookmark manager. Not only that but if you add the page title and hit Enter, it just goes away if you didn't already stick the URL in.  Really dropped the ball on that one!!!

Huh? Just click the star in the address bar. . .

Developer's Corner / Re: Unity Game Engine now free
« Last post by Deozaan on October 21, 2010, 03:53 PM »
Necro Thread Revival Alert!

i'm still looking for a cheap/free 3d game engine that will build games on win/mac/linx/wii/ps3/xbox.

You might want to check out Unity again. They recently (September?) came out with Unity 3 and in the Build settings I have options for:

PC & Mac (Standalone)
Web (browser plugin)
iOS (iPad, iPhone)
Android (in pre-release)
Xbox 360
PS3
Wii

But of course the Free license doesn't cover all of those. The Free license only covers Web and PC/Mac. And building iOS apps is not supported on Windows.

Check out the License comparison for more info.

EDIT: Looks like Linux is the only "major" platform left out. There isn't even a browser plugin for Linux. :(

As long as the store doesn't become the only officially sanctioned way to install software, and the store includes automatic updates for the installed apps, bring it on.

I agree.

It actually sounds pretty cool to me. It's the way Linux does things (Ubuntu, at least) with the Software Center. And speaking of netbooks, have you ever tried to install something on a Netbook from a CD? It's kind of hard when there is no optical drive in the machine. A digital distribution center ala Steam for software would be great in cases like that.

Unfortunately, knowing Apple, they're most likely going to use it to lock the system down even further, which is bad. But since I don't use a Mac, I guess I don't really care that much.

For what it's worth, I just moved from DreamHost to http://nickthewebsiteguy.com/ for hosting and I've been very pleased thus far with the features, price, and service (personal and fast!).

The plans on his website didn't quite meet my needs, so we e-mailed and negotiated a hosting plan that fit me better, so if you're looking for a host and the plans listed don't seem to catch your eye, I recommend you contact Nick and see what you can work out.

I highly recommend Nick.

Google Chrome is the troll of the version world! 1 to 8 in 2 years! That almost sounds like our very own mouser and his sub-version numbers :)

They had to catch up to the other browsers.

I think Microsoft did the same thing with the Xbox 360. Couldn't have an Xbox 2 while there was a Playstation 3 out there. Also, 360 degrees is a full Revolution, which is what the Wii was called at that time.

Developer's Corner / Re: The Fear of Programming
« Last post by Deozaan on October 20, 2010, 12:57 PM »
would you mind to distil the essentials of the video in writing?

Maybe this summary (from the page the video is on) will help:

We developers spend a lot of time talking about how to improve technically at our craft, how to write better code, how to be more productive when we're writing code. But what about when we don't feel like coding? What about the emotions that often keep us from putting our fingers on the keyboard and working on that cool library we want to write or finishing up that cool side project we were so fired up about a few weeks ago? Or to put it another way, why is it that some developers turn out so much more code than the rest of us? How do they maintain five open source projects (or more!) while we might be doing good to make progress on one? It certainly might be that they're smarter, or that they spend more time at it. But maybe not... Maybe the reason we don't create more is that we're afraid. Afraid of not finishing, afraid of what others will say, afraid we won't know how to solve a problem, afraid that we're not working on the right thing. If creating code is even partly an act of artistry, then it's worth examining our emotional connection with what we're making. It might be time to start realizing that coding productivity is affected as much by our emotional outlook as it is by our technique. If 'fear is the mind-killer', how do we overcome it? How do we get past our fear so we can create something amazing and have a blast doing it? Those are the questions that this talk aims to at least begin answering. Finally, why is it so important we conquer our fear and go on to create? _why puts it eloquently: 'when you don't create things, you become defined by your tastes rather than ability. your tastes only narrow & exclude people. so create.'

So is the artifact they're protecting the Ball or is it the gravity gun? Personally I think the Gravity Gun-like thing is much cooler than a giant ball.

Then again, maybe the Ball can do stuff I don't know about yet.
