Ok... that apparently wasn't enough for basement.  How about this?

Easily Add an NSA Backdoor to your Rails app

It really should be an API for Prism instead of a web page. Naturally you would call it PriAPIsm for its ability to facilitate continual invasion of our privacy and rights, and for the effect it will have on "national security" officials.

And that's a problem with the application, not the OS.  I remember the days of DLL hell quite well, and they haven't gone away... they've just been made better, and it's a bit harder to get in that situation.  But it's always possible to write sucky code.  Put the blame where it needs to lie- the applications.  And get the developers to fix the situation, or move on.  You don't have to accept sucky development.

Now that was a good one!

Crashes are should be pretty rare in most circumstances.  On my box, the only things that I have that crash regularly are Visual Studio and Skyrim.  Skyrim is my fault, because I mess around with it so much.  And Visual Studios is... Visual Studio.

If you have programs that crash regularly, best bet is to find something else, IMO.  Because sooner or later one of those crashes will be something more than just inconvenient.

I guess my basic thing is both have a point.  The current terms are not sufficient to adequately communicate what needs to be understood.  However, the solution does leave some things to be desired.  That's why the English language is so overloaded with synonymous terms.  And that's also the reason that being a consultant is a lot about choosing the terms that help you communicate with the client.  Effective business communication is a skill and an art form, and is all about choice of terminology and recognition of the audience.  And I think that's why buzzwords come into play, and why they become so useless by the time they reach the end of their cycle... because they are to an extent necessary in the beginning, then their use becomes watered down and in the end they add to the noise because people concentrate on the use of them and how intelligent/knowledgeable it makes them seem rather than if their use is warranted, and what the term actually communicates.

Oooh.  That was quite the rant, wasn't it?  :-[

As a writer, and someone that is also technical, this is one of the things I hate about where the two come into contact with each other, and one of those things that frustrates me.

I liked this one...

For the people asking for succinct alternatives, here you go:

most performant = fastest
more performant = faster
performant = fast
less performant = slower
least performant = slowest

My 3rd grade son came up with those.

Performant is not an old word.  So until it is included in the standard staid record of the English (and there is a periodic time that the dictionaries update), you won't find it in standard dictionaries.  A good blog post on this is here.  However, it is in our vernacular.  Our language just has to catch up.

The issue is dead serious, yet we try to preserve our sense of humor. It helps.

I guess that was my point with my earlier post.  I couldn't believe that in the midst of such turmoil, the level of humor and preparation that took.

^ thanks for that tip.  I'm using The Old Reader, but I do have a license to Website Watcher, and that seems to work better on many levels, if worse in one specific case; the fact that a web interface to the results would be stellar.

Not that I'm a fan of this particular president. But it drives me nuts when people cop an attitude about something - or ape somebody else's opinion - and they've got absolutely nothing to back it up with.

Eh... he's no better or worse than any of them in modern times, truthfully.  It's the environment that they exist in rather than the President from my observations...

How far can it shift before the sky falls?

Should we bring James Bond in on this?  Or just Adele?

Well, it seems that you are including laptops in this... and you are wrong.

It's really not cost effective, which is the reason that there are fewer offerings today... but you can DIY it on a laptop.

You can use gmail and outlook (not sure about yahoo) without storing the data with them... well ostensibly.  I don't *think* that they store in the case of IMAP... but it does pass through them, so...

I think that's what he meant by #6... the picture was originally a lot smaller, so he might not have noticed that there were two semi-autos on there.

For online tracking of it, there's a tumblr: http://resistaksim.tumblr.com/

Warning- some graphic images there.  More than pepper spray being used, so be careful if you go!

A hosting package that includes CPanel includes 3 different webmail interfaces and also gives POP and IMAP access to the same accounts.

Most hosts will also offer secure connections - but to use your own domain name securely you would have to buy an SSL certificate.

Yeah... but the UX on those standard mail interfaces is one of the reasons I went away from using my own.  All of the alternatives I've seen on hosts have really sucked.

SquirrelMail?  Horde?  Bleh.  And Roundcube is only barely better.

smartermail and atmail are pretty good.  In addition, there is a good comparison on Noupe.  It's pretty old, but its how I found atmail.

My personal recommendation would be to use a commercial webmail solution, and point it towards your own mail server, especially if you want a well developed user experience.

I'd actually petition that the whole conversation about what went wrong be moved to another thread... where things of this nature should probably be done from now on to keep the discussions out of the humor.

Watched Banlieue 13 the other night starring David Belle, one of the developers of Parkourw.

Great movie!  District B13 for anyone looking for it in the states.  D13:U was as usual a cash grab, but even though it suffered in comparison, it's still worth a look aslo.

Mouser, buy some dark chocolate--there are a ton of studies that indicate eaten in moderation it's not just ok, it's good for you. Antioxidants, lower blood pressure, happiness (because dark chocolate is better than no chocolate!)...

Even better... what I've gotten as a treat is dark chocolate covered pomegranate seeds, with no added sugar!  It's not as sweet as a normal treat, but it is still good.
