If you can lay your hands on Vista64 with SP integrated it's actually not bad.  They got rid of most of the problems with HD running on etc.. with SP1. Depending how much address space you eat up with the video there must be something to putting 64 bit Vista on with 4 GB ram because I saw several demo videos where the trade show dudes went to the trouble.  There must be a performance boost in there somewhere.

Keep your eyes open since the copy protection/registration service he uses has an option to apply a discount.  Somebody already asked about it on the forum.

Must be nice to have the luxury. Esp. when I see how they kludge together these off the shelf systems I think they do it deliberately to make them a pita to upgrade... so you'll just buy a new one.

Thanks a lot for the info and links. :) There's a heckuva lot to learn, and I'm just getting started in this area.

I really like DVD Rebuilder so I'll definitely keep watch on BD Rebuilder's development.

btw there's also a Doom10 now. Let me know if Doom11 rolls out next week. ;)

I'm messing around with BD Rebuilder now.  Seems like the .mkv output isn't perfected. I thought I told it to make an .mkv that would fit on a DVD5 but it was about 2/3 the size of the input.  I'm trying again with BD5 selected.  At the lowest quality setting it seems like it will process in about the play time of the source.  If the results are good then I could live with listening to the fans for 2 hours.  6 hours I start to go bonkers.

Nice and simple interface, if I can get it to do what I want that is.

I tried this using x264 one pass mode.  Seems with xvid on a dual core system it uses one thread just to read the input.  The 2 cores aren't maxed out.  With x264 it maxed out both the cores.  I took a 90 minute .mkv about 15 GB in size and shrunk it to less than 4 GB in about 10 hours and change on the dual core.

Looks like if I want to do this as a regular job I have to run it overnight on the dual core.  The quad will finish faster but I'll have to listen to fan noise for 6 hours or more.  SpeedFan beta won't even run and the latest SpeedFan stable won't detect any fans in this PC.  Seems no way to adjust it without installing some 3rd party fans.  Not something I want to get involved in with the jumble of junk inside this box.  It's like working on a car after they stuck all those vacuum controls and hoses all over the place compared to pre-pollution setups.  The equivalent would be your own custom box with stuff set up according to some logic other than shaving a 1/10th of a cent per unit off the cost.

The good news is, once you get to the video stage and put in your settings, it seems to run to completion.  The bad news is, you don't get any feedback on progress or time to completion estimate.

Maybe I'll give BD Rebuilder a try.  I heard the latest beta lets you output either an .mkv or .mp4 file instead of an AVCHD disc structure.

Post New Requests Here / Start Menu Stack
« Last post by MilesAhead on May 29, 2010, 02:01 PM »
What I'd like to see is a Start Menu Stack that remembers that last dozen folders/groups you opened in Start Menu.  No typing.  Click something, the entries are shown.  You click one, and the Start Menu is open with that group selected but not entered.  That way if the one you want isn't there, click on something close and the navigation is almost done.

Recent or frequent programs is not helpful if you want to run different programs from the same group.  You run one, then you have to navigate all the way back down to run the 2nd.  If it's a program that's used all the time, a different method to rapidly launch is already employed. I only use Start Menu for stuff I hardly ever use.  Renavigation to the same area over and over is a pita.

Stuff like Vista Strart Menu or '7' is it's called now, don't seem to have this stack feature.
Seems like to should have been built in like 12 years ago.. but there you go. :(

Not really running without installing .NET but if you have .NET apps that only require .NET 2.0 there should be a small runtime you can download.  For instance on FAVC site there's a .NET 2.0 runtime link that goes to MS download page:

http://www.microsoft...5&displaylang=en

I guess not all that small.  The installer is 22 MB of compressed whatever. :)
But when I was using XP I didn't mind getting .NET 2.0 apps since I already put the .NET 2.0 package on for FAVC.

Developer's Corner / Re: Vista/Windows 7 install locations. Discuss.
« Last post by MilesAhead on May 26, 2010, 12:57 PM »
My small utilities I have create their .ini and data files in the .exe file folder wherever the user unzips it. Not that it comes up that often, but I've found from my own experience that putting these small apps under a folder in the path works well. I use C:\Utils. If it's an .exe that's not going to create any files, I'll just dump it in the folder since the folder is in the path.  If it's going to create an .ini file and/or data files, I'll put it in a folder inside C:\Utils.

Here's the bonus I didn't plan for.  When doing a Custom Install as in putting Windows Seven on a system that has Vista as example, the Windows Seven installer gathers up all the stuff under Program Files and sticks it in Windows.old.  It doesn't bother with C:\Utils.  I set the path, all my command line apps in C:\Utils still run.  I drag a shortcut and I can use apps in a folder under C:\Utils.  As soon as I upgrade I have a bunch of my favorite small utilities already on the system ready to use.  Just have to make a shortcut.

I should probably stick a suggestion in the Readme files but there's already so much in there. Plus how often do people do Custom Installs?  But that's the install I use most often.

Of course this only applies to "hotkey" type apps that don't use the Registry.  The old Delphi stuff still has Inno Setup installers.  The hotkey apps are small enough each user can install his own copy. No real need to "install for all users" with them.

Now here's a cool looking font:

It also comes with an outline font counterpart.

If you want to rip BluRay or DVD to .mkv you can use MakeMKV. It's in beta(and free while in beta) for who knows how long.  Also DVDFab Passkey is still in beta.  Insert the disc, then drag & drop the entire set of video folders to a folder on your HD.

Sometimes one will work where the other doesn't.  MakeMKV is more confused about "episodic" DVD/BluRay discs than DVDFab Passkey.  Sometimes MakeMKV rips a "main movie" type disc much better/faster than Passkey. It's good to have both. Just be sure to disable Passkey while you are using MakeMKV.

For awhile I used the last free version of TotalUninstall.  But due to the "diff mechanism" used I found that to be too risky.  Esp. if some days elapsed between the install and the uninstall.

Now I feel safer just uninstalling with MyUninstaller and using CCleaner to remove any registry residue.  I do an ERUNT snapshot every day so I don't feel too queasy about using CCleaner.

Of course if it's something of a questionable install in the first place then I do a restore point prior to setup.

Of course the whole question would be obviated if the moron, er, I mean, decision-maker, didn't allow spaces in file paths in the first place. A lot of OS work perfectly fine without them.  I guess it's too easy if you don't have to test every string for an embedded space.

I did a run using x264.  Looks like the wave of the future but it takes a lot of horses.  On my dual core it ran 10 hours to encode a 90 minute video using x264 one pass mode.

But I do think for my machines this app is great for doing xvid one pass conversions.  I can convert to HD .avi or just add one line to the .avs script to size down to standard 720,480.

The .avi HD does look good.  But the x264 is definitely glossier looking.  If you have OctoCore PC then I recommend using this for x264.

The other good news is so far I haven't had a crash using this app.  Seems very stable.  The main thing I find disconcerting is once the video encoding starts, you really get no feedback how much longer the processing will take.

XVID4PSP seems better on that score.  Quick AVI Creator seems better for a newbie to get going.  The settings aren't as complicated.  You can start producing good output without a ton of reading.

It might be interesting to ask on a dedicated Windows group/forum like this one for W7:

http://www.sevenforums.com/

Maybe someone using Japanese version of Windows could tell you.  Should be a simple matter of checking an entry to see if the param is the usual "%1" or if there's some other token besides  the ".

I'm no unicode expert but I think the code for the 127 characters is the same in unicode so they probably just stuck with the quote.  I remember in Delphi when you created an ActiveX Control from a TWinControl the strings were automatically converted to wstring type(equivalent to BSTRING type,) but only the first 127 char codes were handled automatically.  All the compiler had to do was use 2 bytes instead of 1 for each character.

Glad the fix worked.  Enjoy the program. :)

The one I downloaded was a free font.  If you look hard enough you can find it.  I forget where I got it and don't want to spend the time. Already found it once.

Yeah, it is weird.  I'm on another board, Digital Video Forums, and after I found this on VideoHelp, come to find out there was an entry in DVF a couple years old.  I have to start checking that list. It's not so obvious where the link is.

Seems like every time I "find" something, it's already in there.  Only thing is many of the tutorials haven't been updated in awhile.  The board is nearly dormant these days:

http://forum.digital-digest.com/

edit: seems like the processing time is about the same if I downsize to DVD with HC 2 pass, or encode to .mkv with this using 1 pass.  The only thing is the DVD has the advantage I can play it on both the SDTV and HDTV.

I did a run to reduce an .mkv and the results were promising.  This program may be a good alternative to Handbrake.  Only thing that threw me a bit was there's an option in x264 to set "zones" that's typically used to encode credits with less quality etc..  There's an edit to put in the starting frame of the end credits. I got a reply back from the author, the way to disable it is to put the last frame of the video as the number. He says you can use preview mode if you want to get the frame number to use the feature.

Eventually I'll get it right.  But the one pass completed without crashing. I have to do another run with another video to see if it's really stable.

The author seems amenable to answering questions.  You can check out his thread on videohelp:

I have never been able to get that to work on any version of Windows. I gave up trying.

It's a relief to know I'm not alone!!  Every time somebody suggests launching the app with a hotkey instead of having it run in the tray I end up trying it. The football gets pulled away again!! :)

The more things change the more they remain the same.  Like I use StandAlone Stacks in W7 and sure enough half the stacks have a program with the old blank paper icon. If you fix that one, it just switches to another and you chase it round and round.
