A friend of mine who heard the podcast suggested that we somehow add track marks for the different segments, but I don't know how to do that.

I just got an idea for my portion for the next podcast, or a future one.  It might not go over well, but my friends and I used to find it pretty funny in college.  We'll see...

Seriously, you Germans can speak English very well!

The podcast was fun, it was fun hearing the guys we read from all the time.  Allen, to be honest, I've never seen the blue people show besides whatever is on the commercial.  But I still think it's a tad pretentious, but then again, I'm a very practical, left-brain guy (I think that's the correct side of the brain, I don't really know).  On a similar note, the new Burger King guy with the costume and mask scares me also.  Kind of like Michael from halloween, except with a burger (or cup of Joe) in his hand instead of a knife.

Yes!!  I remember that game!  That was actually one of the first games I ever played!  Haha...I totally remember that.

Actually, the very first game I played was this stupid Apple game that came with our Apple IIe, where an apple slides across the screen, and depending on if it was a solid apple or just the outlined apple, you ahve to press the appropriate apple key to open the trap door and have the apple slide through.  I don't know if it was more of a gimmick than an actual game, but I remember playing it.

No kidding, I felt the same way.  basically, if cdrw or dvdrw can't work like exactly like the old floppy drives, it's not worth it to me.  As in drag and drop, copy, delete, normal file management stuff...if it can't do that, forget it.  I don't really want to use nero or roxio software to us a rw disc.  If I'm going to go through the whole burning process, I'll just use regular media.  That's why people use the thumbdrives, it just acts like a normal disc drive.

I'm actually kind of surprised that through the years, no good removable rewriteable storage device became popular.  I know zip disks were pretty popular for a while, but they are pretty much done now.  Thumbdrives are everywhere, but it's not really the same as a high capacity disk drive with cheap disks.  Something like minidiscs are cool, but that never took off in the US.  Don't you think it would be cool to have a stable, rewriteable media with cheap floppy-diskish prices?

There's a company, Addonics, that offers a solution for swapping hard drives back and forth that is cool (this is kind of off topic).  They have encolsures that kind slide into a regular 5.25" bay, but the cool thing is that when you pull one of them out, you can also use the encloure as a usb or firewire drive.  How cool is that?!  Double the pleasure, double the fun!

tokjdm, based on your previous post (welcome to DC, by the way!), Evernote is the program that comes closest to your criteria.  I don't think you will find something that suits your needs better.  As far as unicode compatibility and Japanese support, you should probably talk to the author about it and see if you can convince him to include that.

I think that, as of now, none of us will find that "perfect" program for our notetaking needs, and we need to just find the one that fits best.  Or in my case, what I'm doing is using several of them at once, and not committing to any for now.  I use one at work, I use free trial versions of other ones for a short period of time.  It's frustrating, but I think the genre is still in it's premature stages.  I know these programs have been around for ages, but the modern implementation of them is still premature, that's why I say that.

If you wrote the song you can use it however you want. You own the copyright, after all.

I meant if I used other people's songs.  But I think I'll avoid that for now.

By the way, I tried recording my rant yesterday, and it didn't work out so well.  It's tough talking to yourself, I found out.  I'll have to try again, I guess.

well, of course I meant post production, even for my song.  Cmon, I'm a computer geek!
Seriously, I was asking about the copyright issue, but I guess I'll forget about it for now.  I helped a friend of mine do a radio show once, and I think I remember there being something like if you played a clip for 15 seconds or less, it was free, but anything more would require loyalties.  Oh well...

If I played a song quietly throughout the podcast segment (low volume, while I spoke over it), would there be any copyright restrictions on that?  Or should I just stay away from this can of worms?

Have any of you tried the special Easter edition of Reese's Pieces?  They are called Pastel Eggs, but they are the best candies ever.  I already like regular Reese's Piece's, but being the size of M&M's they are kind of small.  The Easter ones are huge and crammed with that great peanut butter cream.  My friend describes it the best, "Reese's Pieces on steroids".  Seriously, for those that like peanut butter candies, go get this, you'll be hooked.

I go to the supermarkets after Easter and clean them out of these bags, since they're usually half price.  I probably have a good year's supply right now, to last me until next Easter.  OK, I have to stop eating...I don't think it's healthy.

OK oK!  I'll try to have my segment by the end of the week.  FYI, I'm planning on having my first "rant" be about user interfaces.

Here are two messages I recieved from the author of Mybase.  It should give some insight to the philosophy behind his program.  He also talks about some of the upcoming features of the program and it sounds like he is looking to implement some of the things we've been discussing here, such as virtual linking ot other items and labels (or tags/categories).

Thank you for letting us know of this discussion. It is interested.

We currently do not have a login account with the donationcoder.com forum, but
we'll have a short note about mybase freeform database software.

Mybase 5 incorporated the 'label' system and the 'symbolic link' feature, which
might have been missed on the forum discussion. the 'label' system works as the
mentioned 'Tag' and 'keyword' system does, you can assign any info items with a
label name. the 'symbolic link' feature allows you to create 'virtual item'
linking to another item, so you can have one item appearing in any other items
without producing duplicates; To create a symbolic link, simply drag-drop an info
item with the 'Alt' key hold down;

Mybase is basically intended to be a powerful personal freeform database
software. A good information management software requires a stable, efficient,
flexible database engine, and then define specific applications on the basis of the
database. note-taking is one of major applications of mybase database.

Mybase offers the addon API, so any utilities related to import/export (or
capture/share) can be designed as addons. this makes the program structure clear
and help improve the main code's performance.

Unlike others, mybase pack is incredibly small even if you have all plugins
packed into; The v5 is even smaller, the main code is only 1MB in file size, while
it contains most of the major components; More important, it is fast. There's
No delay at startup. We try to keep things efficient, uncluttered, flexible yet
simple as much as possible;

If you have any questions using mybase, please let us know. Thanks.

Best Regards,

Mybase Freeform Database ( www.wjjsoft.com )

Thank you for your postings; That is a good place unbiasedly discussing
software, we like it; You may post our notes anywhere you see fit. Here's another note
for mybase software;

We've built a very flexible infrastructure for the freeform database platform,
so we can develop over the database as many applications as possible, and users
can manipulate their own database as easily as possible. Our goal within the
main code is to provide a substantial number of powerful 'Organize' utilities,
'DB maintenance' tools,  'Fast search' capabilities and an efficient, intuitive,
uncluttered user interface, while the addon/plugin API makes limitless
posibilities for making the 'Capture, Share' utilities. All this are based on our solid
database engine. Unlike others, we've put majority of our energy on the
database engine and the flexible infrastructure, rather than focus on a bubbly bulky
UI design. We hope our customers understand all these hidden work done within
the product, as results, we've received a lot of positive words for the freeform
database applications. some of words listed on our website:
www.wjjsoft.com/mbs_testimonial.html  some can be found on the yahoo groups:
http://groups.yahoo....om/group/MybaseForum

For later versions,  we planned to make more utilities on the basis of the
'Capture, organize, share, edit, search' concept, and improve existing addons, and
maybe the UI if that is really necessary and valued for customers;

As for the flexibility with our database, you might have seen that we've
developed some other minor code for GNU Linux and FreeBSD, all these applications are
based on the freeform database engine. We've ever planned to make a series of
programs across Windows, Linux, and Pocket OS like palm/ce; Currently our focus
is still on the Windows platform.

BTW, as to edit webpages, there's a 'HtmlEdit.dll' plugin for this task within
v4,8x, but now, if you've tried the v5 beta, you'll find we've seamlessly
incorporate the 'Inplace HTML EDIT' into v5 without launching a third-party tool. To
edit a webpage, press F2 on the webpage, the webpage goes into edit mode, and
you can make modifications to the webpage, just like the RTF edit;

Living Room / Re: hard drive resurrection [I'm desperate!]
« Last post by superboyac on April 23, 2006, 02:38 AM »
So here's an update on my problem, I hope someone can help me with it:

I got an identical IBM 80GB hard drive from ebay (however, different P/N and different MLC, but everything else is the same).  I switched the circuit boards and I plugged my old dead hard drive back in the machine.  It spins now!  However, the BIOS can't detect the drive.  So I tried everything, different IDE cables, switching from cable select to master/slave configuration, but the BIOS can't detect the drive.

So, I switch the circuit board back to their own drives, and I take the new ebay drive, and plug it in, and the the bios can't detect it either!  Is it possible the ebay drive is bad also?  I hope not.

I take the drive back out and put in my normal slave drive, and the computer boots up fine, like usual.  I take my normal slave drive out and put the new ebay drive in it's place, and the bios can't detect it again.  It also gives a "boot failure" error, as if the boot sequence is all screwed up.

I don't know what else to do.  Next time I have some time, I'm going to stick the drive in another computer all by itself and see what happens.  Otherwise, I'd like to ask if any of you know someone who will recover the data for $200 or under.  If not, I just have to wait until I can spare the money.

Thanks.

mouser, here is one attempt for the main theme of the podcast, let me know if you like it or not.  In case you haven't noticed, I have really old fashioned musical sensibility.  You won't hear too much stuff that sounds like it came within the last 25 years from me.  I haven't named this song yet, so feel free to come up with titles.

http://www.skwire.ne...inpodcasttheme-1.mp3

If you guys like it, I'll record it again, and polish it up.

I mentioned Wolfenstein 3D and Star Control earlier. I played Prince of Persia and Flashback but they weren't among my favorites. Full Throttle was pretty funny, though, but nothing beat the Space Quest series' humor. Good times. Good times.
Whoops!  Didn't read back far enough.  Great games!
6018
Lode Runner!  Yeah, I played that game all the way through, it took forever.  Did you ever fall down somewhere that you couldn't get out of?

486 counts as old school!  That was 1993!
6019
There were parts of Another World that were excruciatingly difficult to pass.  I still remember this part where you had to take an elevator to the bottom, run to the left and immediately shoot as soon as the next screen appeared.  The timing was soooo hard.  Remember the ending?  you hop on the flying dragon with the translucent red wings and fly away!  Oh man, that's great!

I've never heard of Flashback...
6020
Dude, where are the old school pc guys?  Anyone remember these classics?  I had an Apple IIe, and later, a IBM 486.

Prince of Persia
Another World (or Out of this World)
Castle Wolfenstein
Bruce Lee
Aztec
Bard's Tale
Spear of Destiny
Star Control (oh yeah!)

Thanks.  I'll record it again soon so it doesn't sound so muddled.  Sorry Carol, no singing.  I'm not much of a singer, and I don't write lyrics.

Mouser, if I can, I can try to come up with another theme for the general show, but it'll have to be a little later.  I'm not that good at coming up with my own melodies, I've listened to and know so many songs that whenever I try to come up with something new, 3 seconds later it starts sounding like something else I know.  The curse of having so much music accessible in these modern times.

OK, I recorded the theme song for my podcast, it's called "Ode to Cody".  I'm going to have to record it again because I think I placed my stereo mics too far apart and I'm getting some weird effects, especially with the rotating Leslie speaker on the Hammond organ.  And the volume is too low.  But here is a preview of the tune:

Yes, I second that.  I date all my backups, and furthermore, I catalog the contents using Whereisit.  I don't think I've heard Whereisit mentioned here, it's a great program.

That's very interesting Carol.  Did you have similar experiences with CDRW?  Or is DVDRW much more reliable/stable than the CD's were?

How about this, would you be comfortable to use DVDRW to backup data?  I don't mean as your main backup, but as a sort of less important secondary backup?

Living Room / Anyone actually use rewriteable media?
« Last post by superboyac on April 20, 2006, 05:01 PM »
I know every time I've tried using CDRW discs, I've found them to be widely incompatible between machines, and always a little frustrating to use.  Drag and drop never works as simple as that, the discs become corrupted easily, etc.  I think the last time I tried was 2 years ago.  I've never tried DVD rewriteable technology, but I assume it's just as bad.  When I buy discs (CD or DVD) I NEVER get rewriteable discs.

But I haven't kept up with the times and I was wondering if it was better now, and if anyone actually uses these on a consistent basis now.  Flash memory seems to be the standard as far as being able to write/rewrite on a portable media.    But CDRW never worked that easily, at least for me.  Also, I just got a minidisc recorder, and it uses magneto-optical discs which are very easy and stable as far as rewriting data on it.
