I finally got to test it again Miles - well, version "15" - you keep overtaking my last download :-)

It'll take me a while to get to the Divs - it's a bit late here, I'll need to be fresher I think ;-)
Alt+Arrow is absolutely super (I didnt realise all arows work )

  • (1) Is there a reason you dont have "L" (for left) listed as a shortcut (after pressing the hotkey) ?
  • (2) I'm not quite sure where the "g" comes into use - it doesnt seem to be necessary at all (?)
  • (3) in the tray menu, it would be great if I could see what grid is selected (currently I just see a tick/check-mark)

Liking it a lot so far

Hey Miles, any chance you could add your website to your signature, or, you could add it to the website info (underneath signature on the "Forum Profile Information" page) and it will show in an icon under your avatar. I'm a lazy beggar and it would save me going back to the first post every time for the link. Of course I should bookmark it :-[

Bookmarked. I'll sort of pretend I didnt post this :P :D

i didn't know that SC couldn't take images of some windows.. can other win7 users confirm this? or is it something that some other security tool is blocking?

it was explained to me by someone here - (again sorry no time to search :-[). UAC opens the app in a separate desktop.
I have an AHK script for windows (normal/minimise/close) - it doesnt work on any of these windows.

I dont know if this depends on the level of UAC you use, hopefully someone who really knows will post :)
6005
On a couple of occasions now I've wished for this capability - I know it's been requested a few times as well (within other threads), with some support, but I dont have time now to search...

I wanted it for embedding images in a word/PDF document.

You've been busy!

It seems with InfoQube that office files are only displayed if you have MS Office installed. (It currently uses IE for the viewer - which seems to require Office.)
So it will only fulfill your requirements if you have Office...
6008
And do i understand that in all of these cases where SC grabs the focus -- you would prefer it behave exactly as it is behaving, EXCEPT that SC should not grab focus, yes?

Yes.
I think default behaviour should be for the SC window to stay in the background.

[A] is the biggest problem, cause I cannot actually take the screenshot.
With [B] & [C] there's no logic to the window coming to the front - especially with "Hide Window" checked.

I still cant find a solution

there are various programs that display inserted files in a view pane, but they lack a treeview organizer/outliner and vice versa

what apps have you tried?
6010
Well I think I think there's three variations:

A. With "Hide Window" not selected:
If I open Screenshot Captor's main window, change focus to another window, and then attempt to make a screenshot of a selected area, the focus goes back to the SC window.
i.e. I can only sucessfully take screenshots of selected area when SC main window is closed.

B. with "Hide Main Window" checked:
if I press escape before taking a screenshot of selected arrea, the SC window jumps to the front.

C. with "Hide Window", "stay minimized" & "show tray-tip" selected, (also no "pop-up choice dialogue"):
I take a screenshot - any method, the screenshot is successful - but afterwards the SC window jumps to the front.
6011
Today:
(with "Hide Window" selected)
I take a screenshot - any method, the screenshot is successful - but afterwards the SC window jumps to the front. I did change settings today to "stay minimized" (and show tray-tip was already selected).
Again, I've experienced this before with these settings.

At the moment I'll just try to remember to close the SC window, but if you want I can (happily) re-enable the relevant settings to test/check.
6012
I added support for Windows XP now (v2.0.2.0). I figured it out. :D
Give it a try and let me know if it works for you.
-c.gingerich (May 25, 2012, 11:02 AM)

Good  :)
PS. I wasn't asking for myself, I'm on win7
6013
I have tested it on Windows XP (virtual machine), though it should work, I was unable to get it to work.  :( I am still looking into why.
-c.gingerich (May 25, 2012, 07:13 AM)

especially seeing as you're selling it, maybe you should mention that, in some way, on the app's page.
Make life easier for others -and you- in case people get upset after purchase...
6014
Wondering if it work with XP?
Could you add a link to the thread where it is discussed? No need, I found it:Color My Folder

I dont think anyone uses adblock out of spite (I cant really understand where Ars Technica got that idea from). Adblocking became popular because many (most?) adds were obnoxious flashing attention grabbing things. I used find the net just stressfull without an adblocker - maybe I should try it again and see what it's like these days. I have actually disabled adblocker on a couple of sites - maybe because they asked directly, or maybe because I (accidentally) saw the adds and found them interesting.

but I need to view the files in pane
and to mark the nodes (treeview entries) with a status (completed, filled, empty, etc)

I would have thought that there's a lot of outliners there that can do that. Have you done a search on dc for pims/outliners?

InfoQube is incredibly flexible (which can make it challenging to learn). It's easy to try out as it's portable -but-
  • it might be a lot more than what you actually need
  • *some* people are having problems with the viewer at the moment (FWIW I'm having the same problems with XYplorer which also uses IE in it's viewer pane)
  • it is in beta

these might interest you:
What are some one-of-a-kind outlining tools? (Quora, includes a very good description of InfoQube)
web outliners (free)
but
what you're loking for is not rocket science, so what you need is not really a "one of a kind" :-\

ability to view/edit doc/pdf/xls/txt/jpg/etc inside the program (in a pane)
ability to flageach entry in the tree, via tickbox, coloring, etc
ability to save inserted files

are all must

view/edit *all* those filetypes "inside" the programme - I doubt that exists.

but programs like Universal Viewer can open all that kind of files inside a pane

and edit?

I like it

would it be possible to remove the mouse completely from the equation?
Trying to think what could possibly be used:
Win+S ?

(Win+S - with IntelliType software installed - Toggles CAPS LOCK on and off - wouldnt bother me, but might others

I'd be surprised (but interested) if you find anything that can even edit all those filetypes via an external editor... IQ will edit office files -via MS Office- if you have it installed. Note: currently some people are having a problem with displaying office filetypes in IQ due to a problem with IE (the current viewer engine), and MS deciding we cannot really mess around with filtype associations in Vista/Windows7.

If you have Middle Mouse Button already used, the alternative is to Winkey Click the window, then hit the same key you would hit if holding Middle Mouse.

sounds good (I wanted to request an alternative, but somehow thought there was no other option to middle-click).
I'll try this one, thanks miles

>> When you say "in a file that can be transfered to another pc and be viewed/edited there without the need to install anything" do you mean the database should include "File1" etc ?

exactly

IQ uses a database file and an associated folder (within the [portable] app folder) for the HTML/MHT content (notes/saved web pages). It looks like files are not automatically stored in the database or associated folder - you could manually copy the file to the relveant folder and then link to the database. You *can* make notes/saved-web-content be part of the database, but not files.

You may well find a better solution for that - I'm not familiar with other outliners. Ultrarecall used to be popular - not sure if it's fully alive (?) I'm sure there's other options out there.

Do you mean like a "normal" outliner like this:

Screenshot - 2012-05-23 , 23_24_34.png

When you say "in a file that can be transfered to another pc and be viewed/edited there without the need to install anything" do you mean the database should include "File1" etc ?

I know InfoQube is portable - I'm not sure whether it stores files in a folder associated with the database, or if it just links to them wherever they are on the drive.
It's a commercial product but is in beta and probably will be for a while still. Has some quirks, some people seem to cope, some not ;) - the forum is very helpful.

(I attached a PDF file to the selected item - shows in the "HTML Pane" where you could also add: notes AND/OR web content OR files)

On the "Pre-Capture Options" tab, do you have "Hide Main Window" unchecked? Try checking it if so.

that works, thanks mouser
Ideally, would be nice if it were possible to keep it open, but I'm happy now - I always forget to close it manually.

[2] Another minor related bug:
with "Hide Main Window" checked, if I press escape before taking a screenshot of selected arrea, the SC window jumps to the front.

Dunno whether this any help:
If I check  "Hide Main Window", and then uncheck it shortly later, it works mostly as expected (it needs a restart to change back to bug-behaviour described in previous post). i.e. SC stays in the background. But same problem as [2] above
