General Software Discussion / Re: XP or Vista user — take the poll!
« Last post by Grorgy on July 24, 2007, 10:45 AM »
What a depressing sort of future, if you folk are right.  A lot of the fun of the computer for many is hunting up that little program that does just what you want, or tweaking something, if the above scenarios are anywhere near what we can expect then I won't be surprised to be asked if I want fries with that computer the next time i need one.

I'll be sticking with xp (I have one pro, which i dont have the disk for, i bought home and the shop installed pro and one home which is on my laptop, but since they didnt provide a windows disk i have used the one i got with the other computer)  Sooo, if i need to reinstall windows on my desk (running pro now) then i will probably get vista, but i really dont want to spend the money and usually only update when i get a new compuuter.

Find And Run Robot / Re: new launcher just released

We sure do mouser, i wouldnt call myself a poweruser at all and I pretty much use it as a basic program launcher at the moment, though I am learning and what i particularly like is that as my knowledge grows the program can support that and i can do more with it, at the same time, it works  'out of the box' for me as well (and the price is right  :) )

you did visit his/her site and get the latest? the claim there is that it works on all current versions and the site was only updated the other day.  (Grorgy likes to clutch at straws  ;D )

Given its price it would need to offer some pretty serious performance given the number of free alternatives which do much the same thing.

just a general thing, window blinds has an unfortunate habit of causing a bit of havoc with some programs so if you are running that then tell it to ignore morpheus

Thankyou DonationCoder, Boxer Software and especially Carl for organizing these draws and finding companies prepared to give great software away, well done.   :)

Gizmo had some stuff on this recently

At this site they test all the major firewalls using leak-tests. Now outbound leak-testing is only one criterion for assessing firewall performance indeed some would argue that inbound protection is more important. My view is that both are important as are user friendliness, resource usage, software compatibility and resistance to termination by hostile agents. That said Comodo, Jetico and ZoneAlarm Pro top he list while the Microsoft XP SP2 firewall get the wooden spoon. ZoneAlarm free was another notable poor performer.

Interestingly, and perhaps not surprising, most of the suites dont do so well, with the exception of Kaspersky and Ghost  Anyway gives you more to look at and to think about before parting with the hard earned $$$$s

General Software Discussion / Re: Best jukebox that is NOT iTunes?
« Last post by Grorgy on July 16, 2007, 10:32 PM »
I was thinking that like Carol, I'd never had trouble, but I have, but I went and got the latest drivers for the sound card and creative media player 5 and all was well again, could be worth a try

I went with Kaspersky internet suite because of its reported excellence in all the antivirus tests and I really didnt want to hassle about getting more than 1 thing, so i took it all, seems to have all the options anybody would need.  I have a router to which says it has a firewall so i dont know, i feel safe, sort of lol

That goes without saying now, the development of maze craze has the potential to cause mass insanity lol

i must say its a relief to see kids of today starting to be armed with a bit of AHK rather than an AK47  :D

They have a lite version of registrar as well, which is free.  I find it meets all my needs, but my needs in the registry are minimal, i try to stay away from it.  Could be worth a look though.

Im interested in how you can satisfactorily discuss economics in more than a very theoretical sense if you remove issues of public policy.  It seems to me that the 'laboroatory' for the 'science of economics' is the real world, and in that real world it is public policy which to a large degree determines what will happen in economic policy.

General Software Discussion / Re: old software + dual core = ???
« Last post by Grorgy on July 13, 2007, 02:52 PM »
I read a review about this somewhere to because I was interested when i went to a dual core, they said that the worst they had experienced was that the older programs didnt take advantage of the dual cores, which made me feel more comfortable about it. And there is always the fix above if something does go wrong

Backup Guide / Re: Information about Backup4all 2.3.2
« Last post by Grorgy on July 13, 2007, 02:38 PM »
Following a rather annoying experience with another company, I was wondering if Backup4All discriminates against those who purchase through DonationCoder with a discount code or if the published policies on the website are applicable no matter what you paid for the license?

Would you mention relatives who wear hats like that on their tails??  ;D

I cant tell much difference between them all, but the one ive grown to like is mediamonkey 3.  It has all the sorting tagging and what not that i need.  Its still an Alpha build and it crashes sometimes but hey, i reckon it sounds better than version 2 which is the stable one.

The major trouble with free market economic theory is that there is virtually no free market.  Oil is controlled by a few major players, pharmaceuticals by a few, and the list goes on.  On the other side governments provide various payments to those in need, in the form of welfare and rent assistance and so on, and subsidies to business for providing employment and infrastructure that the the state cannot or will not provide.

Interestingly organisations like the world bank and IMF who at one stage demanded that help to poorer countries was dependant on their economies opening up to free trade and reducing welfare have  been forced to rethink their strategies as large multinational and transnational companies  bought up all the resources in these countries and provided grinding and worsening poverty to most of the people in these countries.  Fortunately, but after untold deaths through starvation and ill health associated with poverty the thinking has changed.  But possibly to late to save the world bank and IMF as can be seen by some South American nations setting up their own bank and removing themselves completely from the world bank.

Smith realized his invisible hand would not work even in his day as there where not sufficiently free markets then and for this to be resurrected (to keep with the religious overtones) 230 yrs later when free markets still do not exist, well it seems to me Adam Smith should be remembered for his contributions to an emerging science? and that his comment on the beauty of Irish prostitutes is the only one worth following up on today.
