Living Room / 'Work Done' Lists Sofware, any ideas ?
« Last post by mahesh2k on August 26, 2011, 07:33 AM »
I'm looking for software which works similar to "to-do" lists but also offers logging feature. By logging i mean keeping track of weekly, monthly and daily tasks. For example, you've done 10-12 tasks today and marked them as completed. So this information needs to be accessible in sorted format as per day, week, months. Something like this -

Day 1 :   | Week 1 | Month 1 | Completed Tasks | Pending Tasks
{ Task1 }
{ Task2 }
{ Task3}
{ Task4 }
{ Task5 }

I'm focusing on software that helps me log completed tasks for now. Any ideas ?

General Software Discussion / Re: Cnet's Download.com and the installer scam
« Last post by mahesh2k on August 26, 2011, 03:42 AM »
A fair number of people are pulling their software from CNet.I don't know if it will make a difference though, as it's only the top few hundred programs that drive things, and the rest is all just long tail. Being in the long tail is like screaming at the sky from the bottom of the ocean. Useless.
Why useless ? Developer is not getting donations from the small-traffic coming from that site. I even doubt that there is 1% of traffic coming from Cnet or any other downloader site. Most of the casual users with mindset 'use-n-throw' hardly care about developer sites or who is the developer behind software. CNet is not even posting developer information properly as it is leak to their traffic. So why exactly it is useless ? I don't think developers lost their right to take down software from such leechers, even though software is free or open source. As this man said once, small change always makes big difference if we start from our own home.

Mouser, do you see any traffic from CNET in your server analytics logs ? If yes then it is good for developers in general and if not then they're basically creating traffic leak for freeware or shareware products or respective author site.

Finally his resignation will surely help linux desktop as apple is likely to lag on some projects where jobs personally keeps tab. I'm sure he found someone worthy for his company. Trouble with fanboi (or faith mindset) is that before death, they try to create thousands like them. They think this is necessary and good for their tribe. Jobs may not be well but there are many designers and developers inspired by apples simplicity (ehm, including one-button stuff). Jobs and gates both are indirectly involved into their own properties and still they're steering things in the market.

It is becoming harder everyday to monetize websites. So their action to monetize is understandable. But the issue is that they're simply copying softwares from developers sites to their own datacenter and bundling them with OC like installer/updater and slapping on face of downloaders. All this without letting developer know about it. They need to understand that they're not doing any favor by hosting these files or saving bandwidth of developer. It's better to lose bandwidth than letting someone take advantage of your work without giving you credit.

In this day-and-age, aren't we meant to create a facebook page and start a petition or campaign to highlight cnet's crass new system.
+1. Maybe sites like "Makeuseof" and "Lockergnome" and "Ghacks" can help spread the word ?

Sorry for the late review. Just downloaded and listened to it and I like it. :)

Few suggestions -

1) PDF transcript please (ya know speed of my USB data card ryan  :D)
2) Interviews of developers from codecanyon (envato) or other freeware/shareware authors
3) GTD stuff (interviews or resources?) :P
4) Audio goes up and down, that's the only problem. So please fix that.

Keep up with the podcast  :Thmbsup:

Yeah, that is connection. I can't imagine people clicking on certain links and keywords (pr0n) and getting tagged in results. That surely going to mess things up in search engine. It'll also affect some users when they click on certain search terms and end up getting noticed by office colleagues.

How about charging for installation and hosted solution ? You can keep code for download and free if you want. But you can charge for hosted solution, just like wordpress.

Protecting patents by grabbing more under your own organizations label ? that's double standard from google.

As for google acquiring motorola, they did that to dominate android market. You can't compete with 6% microsoft phone crowd and 40% apple crowd only by creating open source mobile platform. You have to come up with hardware as well before dumping them down the trash. They did this type of thing already when they first penalized "beat that quote" site and then they purchased it and ranked it higher again than any other quote websites in the search results. Very few people in SEO world noticed this type trick from google.

Basically they want to kill samsung, LG and any other brands which are using android. That way they'll become market leader for android mobiles and they can go headon with microsoft, apple and nokia. I think less-popular mobile companies like samsung, LG, Sony should move to their own platform or meego to save their company from upcoming google threat.

I think his point was to be in opposition to your point.  The idea is, if you don't want people to see anything, don't share public.  Public is not limited by G+ in any way.  So don't use it.
I think his point was not in opposition, infact i misunderstood friend feature thinking it was similar to facebook and orkut,which he pointed out in his reply. It's one way for public streams and can be controlled by the members. This point was cleared by you already but he just mentioned that where i misunderstood the friend activity of google+.

This only happens if you're connected to them.  If they're not in your circle, then you're not connected to them, as was quoted above.
Check the image again,they don't have to connect with you via G+ only. Even if you're in connection somehow using email or following them on G+ or blogger follow system etc, then this will affect SERP. For example, Matt cutts is connected to you in one way public stream activity but he's not going to follow you or many others, still his suggestions will appear in your SERP. Same goes with anyone with gmail account sending emails to you. You'll see the influence of their search pattern in your results page if they're searching google by logging in to any google service.

If someone follows you on G+, it means that your public posts will show up in their stream, nothing more. They would be able to see those public posts by going to your profile as well, that is the whole point of "public". There is no relation the other way unless you choose to follow them back.
Exactly.

One more thing why i hate G+ is that, your friends and family influence the search results. So this could be a problem if you're connected to any profile which is made by link spammer or annoying friend who constantly posts links or stuff. This includes many top social media celebs who post too many links in their activity streams every hour.

Living Room / Do no Evil - Page Speed Service
« Last post by mahesh2k on August 10, 2011, 01:32 AM »
How to kill CDN service competitors like cloudflare,akamai and maxCDN ? Simple. Become powerful search engine and get more fanbois and release anything against your competitors and you'll win. Oh wait, that's not all. Your customers will give you all the data related to traffic with this new page speed service. Win!

Page Speed Service is an online service that automatically speeds up loading of your web pages. To use the service, you need to sign up and point your site’s DNS entry to Google. Page Speed Service fetches content from your servers, rewrites your pages by applying web performance best practices, and serves them to end users via Google's servers across the globe. Your users will continue to access your site just as they did before, only with faster load times. Now you don’t have to worry about concatenating CSS, compressing images, caching, gzipping resources or other web performance best practices.

Developer's Corner / Re: Software Revenue/Licensing Thoughts
« Last post by mahesh2k on August 06, 2011, 04:49 AM »
Taking example of clients expecting whole package plans, i think these type of cases are limited only to people who pay upfront/corporate crowd. But in case of small business owners and freelancers they prefer pay-as-you-go or feature plans. It is hard to put people into single frame when it comes pricing. But i agree with mouser, less complexity the better it is for customers to buy stuff. Try to give them less choices for purchase. Instead of offering 9 option of feature set, restrict it to 3-4. Less is better. How ? imagine android store or kindle store giving you options for ebooks- one time read, two time and so on.. or final as unlimited. I think maximum readers will choose either unlimited read license or they'll simply ignore such product offer.

Fruityloops - made it easier for any small guy using computer to produce music. Many production level tunes are made with this software today. Same goes to reason, rebirth and Acid.

Virtual Dimension- lets you keep any wallpaper and apps running on multiple desktop and you can switch between desktops. Just in case ya know..NSFW stuff.

Winamp (no seriously), SQlite and Autohotkey.
