Site/Forum Features / Re: Discussion: How can we Improve DonationCoder?
« Last post by nosh on April 29, 2010, 05:51 AM »
For me, the real strength of DC is this forum and the wealth of information that lies inside. The regulars know this all too well but a newcomer may not realize the forum's true potential by a brief visit to whichever thread that got him here in the first place. If a way can be found to harness the forum information it would benefit everyone - regulars, newcomers and the site itself. There could be links to other threads automatically generated at the bottom of each thread, based on matching tags.

Tagging has been discussed more than once and generally been considered a good idea, IIRC, but never actually been implemented so I assume it may not be the simplest thing to do. I suppose people like me could just try and be less lazy and cross-link threads where appropriate for now. Also, I don't know how feasible it is for internal forum links to appear different from external links and possibly have an option to be opened in a popup window containing a thread or just a single post to keep the BS level to a minimum.

Site/Forum Features / Re: NANY 2011 :: A New Concept -- Have your say!
« Last post by nosh on April 19, 2010, 12:10 AM »
Is NANY an acronym? If so, I still don't know what it stands for. In the spirit of simplicity I suggest a slight rebranding - give it a simpler/catchier name like GoCode or DoCode or DoCoGoCode. Ok, that's not much simpler. I'll stop now.

I love the first layout. The half wall not only looks good but could also be practical for serving, etc. You could try anchoring the wall to brackets fitted inside the door frame for added stability.

I tried your program and it seems to work quite well. It found the dupes in my test sample after listening to the files (I mangled the filenames and erased all tags just to be sure :) ).

It seems unable to decipher the bitrates for .flac files, however, and marks .flacs as the lowest quality files in the bunch! A critical flaw, IMO.

The interface is elegant and I can see myself using the program after it undergoes a little refinement.

Crap movies starting off with glowing reviews and ridiculously high ratings on IMDB, thanks to the tossers who formed the cast/crew.

Classic!  Ubisoft's DRM servers went down- making AC2 unplayable for many *paying* customers!

It's hard to foresee every little problem when you have your eye on the money.

It'll be interesting to see how the Assassin's Creed II release with its cloud-based DRM plays out. There was some loose talk about a DDoS being planned at 4chan but I wouldn't be too surprised if the shit really does hit the fan. *fingers crossed*

Mediafire free accounts are restricted to uploads of 200 MB per file and files are deleted if they are not accessed every 30 days

... the mother of all differences. :) I certainly wouldn't use their free service for backup purposes.

I use a workaround for this in Xplorer² by setting digits as comments and then using comments as the primary sort field and name as secondary. I mostly use this method to reorder folders and shortcuts (both of which accept comments) so it works.

Of course, not all file types will let you store comments, or you may just have too many files to make a manual approach feasible. Not exactly a universal solution... :)

Living Room / Re: any (Nokia) mobile phone maven's out there?
« Last post by nosh on January 21, 2010, 10:41 PM »
I may have identified the issue, but it's going to cost me to find out...

I hope you've asked about this issue on a phone forum too.

did you go back to an old version (7.0), or are you using the current version (7.1.40.1)?

I'm using v7.1.30.9 which I downloaded a few months back for another phone. I am able to see the memory card directly using a vanilla file explorer and don't touch Nokia software for transferring data. The only thing I use their software for is to backup contacts, and even then I create a new file every time, rather than risk using their sync functionality.

This is more of an excuse for me to rant and isn't going to be any specific help to you but the OVI suite is, without exaggeration, one of the lousiest pieces of software I've _ever_ come across!

I recently got an N86 (mainly because it has a decent camera) and had all kinds of issues getting started - bugs with importing contacts, faulty reporting of number of contacts, fcuking up my contacts on PC while syncing, (legit) songs downloaded from the OVI store coming with DRM so secure they refuse to play on the (officially purchased, non grey-market) phone they're meant for... a bazzion things added to my add/remove programs list and startup, other stalls and crashes... the list is endless.

I understand a cellphone is a versatile piece of equipment and uses a lot of different technologies but how hard would it be to allow users to add/remove components under one main entry like MS Office does. And does the software have to completely overwhelm and almost hi-jack a PC because it's used to sync some data to the phone?

I got rid of the OVI crap and am using PC Suite 7, which seems much more sane. Thank god for the hacker community that lets us retain some dignity while using these draconian ( :P ) devices and thank you (for once I don't feel guilty saying it...) bittorrent!

The nircmd method worked really well for about two minutes and then the tooltips were hidden once again.
It sucks that a memory resident program is needed for something like this but I'm going to give ToolTipFixer a try.
