I'll have an update out sometime tonight.

Congrats on getting version 4 out, Rob.  I downloaded it, but since I too am running XP w/classic theme, I think I'll wait for the update before installing.  BTW, should I uninstall version 3 first, or can version 4 go right on top of 3?

I'm under the impression that the Windows firewall was extensively improved for Windows 7 (or perhaps Vista, I'm not sure), but that it's not so good for Windows XP.  Am I mistaken?
It was introduced with XP SP2, and it was just fine back then - what you really need is incoming stuff blocked, and the XP firewall does that just fine.
Since I rarely have any malware, perhaps I shouldn't be so concerned, but I don't like the idea that a malware program that managed to get on my computer could send out information without my knowing it.  Thus, a firewall that works in both directions seems to me a good idea.

i don't care what kind of bad stuff.  But if I need multiple programs to deal with the multiple kinds of bad stuff, that's fine.  My goal is simply to cover all bases and I'll use the proper lingo when necessary.
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is designed to supplement what an AV program does and to catch the things most AV programs are likely to miss.  It can be used on demand or (in the Pro version) you can schedule it to run scans at a specific time.  Also, its database is updated multiple times a day.  I've been using it for about two years, and I like the feeling of extra security that it gives me.  Since I rarely if ever have any malware on my computer, I can't say it has made a difference except to my peace of mind.

Well, maybe we have our answer for the antivirus/firewall categories.
I'm under the impression that the Windows firewall was extensively improved for Windows 7 (or perhaps Vista, I'm not sure), but that it's not so good for Windows XP.  Am I mistaken?

Developer's Corner / Re: "competitive upgrade" - is it ethical?

Personally, I don't have a problem with businesses that offer incentive pricing.
I tend to agree.  Speaking as a customer rather than a developer, I'd be delighted if I were given the opportunity to buy at a substantial discount what looked to be a better piece of software than the one I currently own.  But that would only be true if I were dissatisfied with my present software or I were really impressed by features in the competitor's program that mine didn't offer.  I've seen these kinds of competitive offers from time to time and have never been tempted by them because I was already happy with the program I owned.

Seriously. Go to spokeo.com and type in your name (and any past names for you married ladies). If you don't like your information being displayed, click on your name (at the left) and then copy the URL of your profile, then click the Privacy link in the bottom right corner of the page. You will be given the opportunity to paste the URL to opt out of the service.
Well, I just searched for me, and all they had was my name, address, phone number, spouse's name, assessed value of my house (!), and approximate age.  I thought about asking them to remove that, but to do that I'd have to give them my email address.  Frankly, since they apparently don't yet have that, that's the last thing I'd want to add to their info.  I don't trust them at all.  So, since the info they have is pretty much readily available online already, I'm tempted to let them keep that.  I do have junk email addresses, but I think I'd rather these sleazeballs didn't even know what they are.

Thanks, guys, for the heads-up about this.

LaunchBar Commander / How to stop backups
« Last post by cyberdiva on January 09, 2011, 03:48 PM »
Yes, Mouser, I know this is heresy, but I really do NOT want LBC to make daily backups, and I can't find a way to stop it from doing so.  (I'm using version 1.116.01 on WinXP Pro SP3.)  I'd also like LBC to keep its promise not to nag me all the time about the need to back up.  The box that appears with the nag message claims that I won't see it again, but apparently it means I won't see it again until next time.  :(

I back up the three key LBC files regularly to my flash drive, so I really do not need or want my directory cluttered with all this backup files.  It's hard for me to find the REAL files amid all the clutter.  I'm sure there must be a way to stop this from happening.

Thanks in advance for your help.

About Everything be sure you use latest version, not the one on frontpage. Check changlog at forum section "Announcement". . . One of those I wish would go payware to be honest.
Thanks for this info.  From time to time I've simply used Everything's "Check for Updates," and I've always been told that the version I'm using (1.2.1.371) is up to date.  After reading your message, I went to the forum site and found a download for version 1.2.1.451a, but then I saw that it's an alpha (I normally avoid alphas) and it was released in November 2009!  So what's the story?  Is it stable?  Are they still working on it?  Like you, I'd gladly pay money for this program.  However, since that's apparently not possible, I'd just like to be sure that I'm not trading a stable version for one that still isn't even in beta.

I too would question including Search Everything.  I love the program, but I think it used to be faster than it is now.  It's very fast once it does its survey of the computer, but that takes longer than I remember it taking in the past.

Paintshop Pro, basic tools...mostly the clone tool...and pixel by pixel editing by hand, zooming in & out, over & over. No fancy tricks and tools here, pure skill. (that's why it's a lot of work)
Thanks very much, April, for your response.  Being lazy, I had hoped for a magic bullet, but I'm also glad to know that such impressive results are possible with skill and hard work.

Thanks, Arizona Hot, for your response.  Actually, though, my question was intended for app103.  The photo she posted (3rd reply in this thread) was considerably better than any other I've seen.  I should say, though, that I was also impressed by your attempt to get rid of the person in the wedding photo.  I have just started to use Inpaint, and when I saw Renegade's version using Photoshop, I tried to see what I could do with Inpaint.  My attempt wasn't nearly as good as yours.  But I'd still love to know how app103 got such a clean, clear rendition of the apples.

This is a lot of work, and I normally work on much larger images, but if you are willing to give me enough time, I can do the rest for you too.
I'm really impressed with your version of the apples.  What did you use to do this?  The edges are especially impressive (compared to anything I've been able to do).

Curt, I have finally managed to duplicate your "No Article Created" message.  I did so by closing my KnowledgeBase and then closing Surfulater, and then trying to capture an article.  You DO have to have a KnowledgeBase open in order to add an article.  However, I never close the KnowledgeBase when I close Surfulater.  Thus, like J-Mac, I can add articles without first having to open Surfulater.  The act of adding an article will open Surfulater, and since my KnowledgeBase was never closed, it's ready to receive the added article.

-I marked the article's text on this Danish page, and right-clicked Surfulater: Add new article.

Nothing else.

I guess it may be due to the lack of Unicode.  :tellme:
Hi, Curt.  I opened to the Danish page whose link you provided, highlighted the article (did you do that?), right-clicked Add New Article, and Surfulater added the article, complete with all the Danish letters.

Hi, Curt.  I was surprised by the "No Article Created" message you say you've been getting frequently. I use Surfulater a lot and have never seen that message.    Very strange.  Have you posted a message on the Surfulater support section?  I find that Neville is very responsive.  Except, perhaps, about unicode  :( .  I've found that I can enter, say, characters like é, ñ, ü, and ¿ and see them in the articles I've saved, but if I try to search on a word with one of these characters, I'm not successful.  If the word is in the title, I can find it via the Knowledge Tree Filter, which apparently can handle unicode, but the otherwise terrific full-text search mechanism cannot.  I've been hoping that Neville will fix this.  He claimed back in May that he was working on it, but apparently he hasn't yet been successful.

I wonder whether we're losing sight of barney's original message.  He was trying to find a way to prevent bad guys from taking photos his daughter will put up on the Web.  Some of the early responses dealt with the difficulty of locking down a photo that anyone can see.

I wonder, though, whether the protections SmugMug makes available are as lame as Renegade claims.  I certainly agree that telling search engines to ignore you is not a dependable way to protect anything.  But some of the other protections SmugMug offers seem as if they might do the job.  If, for example, barney's daughter password protects her entire site with a strong password, the bad guys won't even know what she has put up.  And while it's possible for a pro to break some passwords, why would s/he bother to do so on a site s/he knows nothing about?   I think Renegade is right when he says "It's probably more [security] than most people need."

Hi, Curt.  I guess you discovered what I was about to tell you, namely, that yes, Surfulater is definitely still in active development.  As you've found, the most recent version is 3.4, and there was at least one other before that but after 3.0.  I don't recall whether I said this in response to April's message, but another plus is that the Surfulater developer is very responsive.  So if you're still debating, I'd say GO FOR IT, especially if you can still find it at 50% off.  That's a terrific price!

I tried NetNotes, as a possible replacement for Surfulater. I wasn't that thrilled with it. Surfulater really spoiled me rotten.
I was about to recommend Surfulater, but I see app103 has beaten me to it.  I tend to save parts of web pages rather than the entire page, but Surfulater can do both.  A description of some of its web-saving capabilities can be found here.  And it's not limited to information from the Web.  Just about any electronic document can be saved.

Surfulater is not free--indeed, at USD $79, it's a bit pricey--but you can use it on up to five computers, and I think I've occasionally seen some special offers for it at a discount.  All I can say is that I've tried lots of programs to save and retrieve information, and my hands-down favorite is Surfulater.

I've never used SmugMug, but I know people who have, and they're very pleased with the array of features, which include a number of different ways to protect the privacy of your photos.  Here are a few that they list:

At SmugMug you can:

    * Password-protect selected galleries.
    * Password-protect your entire SmugMug site.
    * Tell search engines to ignore you.
    * Hide selected photos so only you can see them.
    * Make selected galleries private. Your friends can visit them without entering passwords, but only if you give them the address.
    * Make your entire SmugMug site private. Your friends can visit without entering a password, but only if you give them the address.

I'm not sure whether this will meet your needs, but I thought I'd mention it.

One feature that I use a lot in ClipMate is "Power Paste."

The only time I tried that I got in a right mess.  I don't currently have need of it,  but how difficult do you find it?
I don't find it at all difficult.  There were a couple of times in the past when ClipMate would quickly run up or down the list of clips I wanted to paste without pasting anything.  When that happened, I think I wrote to the forum, and the developer promptly told me what to do to prevent that from happening.  I honestly don't recall the details, because it was a while ago.  For the most part, I just tell Clipmate whether I want it to go up or down my list, and it pastes the clips in that order.

Like Superboyac, I don't want my clipboard manager to be a database manager or notetaker.  I'm concerned only with the clipboard features.  One feature that I use a lot in ClipMate is "Power Paste."  I can gather information from a number of different places and then paste them one by one automatically into a form, a report, a list, or whatever.   That plus the ability to click on the ClipMate icon and have it show me the most recent clips (currently, I can see the last 20 without changing anything; were I to make the interface longer, I could probably see the last 40 or more, and of course choose the one I want to use) are probably the features I value most.
