Intro:
MonkeyDash is a 2 player strategy board game. A match takes about 15 minutes. It is made by DC member Ampa, who also play tested the game here on DC: https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=12523.0

My impressions
(I've just posted the below text as a boardgamegeek review, pending approval)

I've so far played Monkey Dash around 30 times since last fall. I really enjoyed it from the get go and still do! :) Here are some of my impressions from the "phases of playing" I've gone through.

PHASE 1 -- beginner
For the first one or two matches I had a hard time grasping a working strategy. But so had my co-player - we fumbled around to equal degree. Still, I liked the game experience from the start. Simple moves and rules yet hard to calculate a multi turn strategy. Your opponent often comes up with surprising counters. After later playing against some people who are new to the game I think my experience here generalizes. You really need a few games to get to grips with the game. Good thing that the matches are short then!

PHASE 2 -- grasping strategies
Then I got a better feel for some effective strategies. I think the outcome of a match to a large degree hangs on doing the right things on the way to the monkey. Very often the one who first gets there and starts moving the monkey home will also win (but not always). Realizing this, our matches have gotten a bit longer from preventive manouvering in the middle to (with much joy!) mess up the opponents strategy. But the games have almost never come to a standstill in the middle, which I had thought they would. Pretty soon one player gets an opening, gets through to the monkey and the game focus shifts to the race back. The action cards very often break the tie here.

On maybe two occassions we've decided to implement a chess clock style "think time limit" of 10 seconds, just to loosen up a standstill-ish situation. That worked fine and was great fun in itself. I've also played two entire matches in such "turbo mode" - intense fun!

PHASE 3 -- thoughts on improvements
The rule book suggest that when playing with children (or new players) you can balance the game by different distribution of action cards. An alternative that also works is to give the child one more action point per turn. In fact, for small children it might be better to first leave out the action cards completely and focus on the basic gameplay.

I'd like a mode or version for more players. I can imagine a 4 player version using two copies of the game like this: place the two maps next to each other, monkey nest edge touching. Position crates from both games. Monkeys start in loading bays, supervisors in nests. The goal is then to move your monkey to the diagonal loading bay on the other map. (A worry is that 4 player games would be too unpredictable thereby lack the strategy element. But still I think it could be worth a try.)

I like the game box, it really stands out and fits the theme of the game well. That said, it is a bit bulky so when I bring the game somewhere I leave the box at home and use a plastic bag.

FINALLY...
The theme of the game is great and adds to the joy of playing! That's important when there are so many good games out there that compete for our time and have some similar game architecture. A quirky detail: partly influenced by the enthusiastic video tutorial on the game site we've found ourselves starting to shout "MONKEY DAAAAASH!" with the same great gusto whenever making that move! Everyone enjoys that. :D

I just gave VLC a shot. I get streaming/receiving to work but on pause/new track things get desynced from buffering or stops playback altogether  :(. I've tried enabling/disabling/changing cache values (between 0 and 300) on both the stream and the receiver side but still have these problems. Any ideas on any settings that might solve these problems?

Using 3 VLC instances:

For outputting a youtube video to mp3 audio dirpy.com is great! Quoting myself from another thread:
If the videos are on youtube then there are also several good webapps. Dirpy (http://www.dirpy.com/ ) is the best one I've found. Very quick and no-nonsense site. Enter the youtube video URL, tweak some settings if you want to (choose a subsection of the video, change id3 information, set bitrate...) and download the mp3.

Nice!  :) Confirmed working. Two small tweak thoughts:
1. if I search "pdf" FARR gets 2000+ hits. Hit PgDn and FARR starts working at listing them. If I then PgDn again before FARR has filled the entire list then I get a scroll down in the list followed by a quick reset of that scroll as FARR keeps filling the list. For a search with many matches FARR takes several seconds to fill so that can get annoying. Two alternatives: Stop filling the list once the user presses PgDn. Or keep filling the list but remember how many PgDn the user has pressed and move there after the list is complete.
2. On second PgDn FARR scrolls the long list but the cursor is in the input box. That makes triggering something in the list by keyboard tricky. Better alternative: let the second PgDn do the same as arrow down + PgDn.

(Unrelated: hotkey config: wasn't there a special variable that represents the main input box contents in the "Text for search edit box" inputfield? I want a hotkey to prepend current inputbox text, i.e. "newtext $$1" but $$1 doesn't work. I've probably just forgotten what it is but can't find it through searches/helpfile now so...)

Thanks, that might also work. Though I'd like to use a program with more advanced playlist features (like Winamp or foobar2000 if possible) to control as the stream source, so I'll try the shoutcast possibility first I think. Have not had time to actually try to set it up yet.

Hi and thanks for the feedback. I've tried all relevant winamp plugins I've found, including those in that thread, but can't get it to work (alternatively, not working without delay). Also tried AudioRepeater last time I looked for a solution to this but got delay problems. The speaker positions for the two soundcards will be close enough for it to sound weird. I've also searched for some foobar plugin but can't find one that fits the bill. That's why I'm now more leaning towards trying to get two separate mediaplayers instances in sync.

Hi, time for yet another post in this thread where I (very seldomly) talk to myself  ;D

I just did some new searches on this problem but didn't find a solution. But I'm thinking of another, second best solution: using two instances of some media player, tied to one output soundcard each and exactly syncronized somehow, possibly through an autohotkey script. So the user would only use (and perhaps also only see) one media player window. But clicking pause there will instantly pause also the other one. The same goes for changes to the playlist, jumping to a location in the song and so on. Does this seem doable? Any other feedback? And if someone knows an application that already does what I want (output to two soundcards simultaneously) then post away of course.

I completely understand the worries here. All my small programs fall into this category and some have been FP flagged before. I see that Mouser also posted at the AHK forum: http://www.autohotke...orum/topic53129.html . Let's see what folks there reply. As mouser says (in that thread), as long UPX packing is default mode for Autohotkey any site admin that wants to avoid FP deflecting work would have to manually monitor compiled AHK uploads for UPX. Quick idea: maybe autohotkey could be changed so that is uses different colored icons for files compiled with UPX (standard green H) and withoug UPX (same H but blue background, for example)?  That would make spotting the UPX ones easier once you've got the files down into a folder.

Here's one extension I can think of: there are some sites that use gmaps to let you make custom running maps e.g. http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/ . Maybe the "new route" screen could get a box for entering such a URL. It might even be possible for the program to import some data from a URL, like the total length of the track, coordinates etc?

I didn't know about that. Disappointing if they'll try to DRM-cripple it. I'm not too worried though. Look what happened when the industry tried to push DRM for portable audio players. Plain non-DRM mp3 players won. The same is bound to happen with ebook readers. That said, I hope we don't get a whole year wasted on failed DRM attempts before reasonably priced, large size and DRM free devices show up.

its not that it has to be exactly 8.5x11, it's that i need to be able to open a pdf file of standard printed page size, and see the whole page and be able to read it comfortably -- and not need to pan and zoom.
Agreed, but if the device has decent white space cropping then it can be about 4x4 cm smaller and still display common text documents at 1:1 compared to printouts.

The new Skiff Reader is 11.5 inch. That just might be large enough.

I've longed for an A4 sized ebook reader for some time too. It is weird that so little of the ereader buzz is focused on large size screen readers. Maybe my first ebook reader will not be a standalone device but instead an ultrathin netbook/laptop with swivel and a screen with ebook mode. PixelQi screens are said to reach markets early 2010. Hi all  :) As you can see I'm entering NANY at the last minute (almost). The NANY event is great and I'm thrilled to soon try out some of the other apps. Great job Mouser and Phil and everyone else.  BigTimer is a pretty small autohotkey app so the Mini NANY category seems fitting. It is finished and I'll post it very soon.

First one issue though: All the autohotkey code is done by me. I was first inspired by Skrommel's timer script (https://www.donation....msg140627#msg140627 ) but then deviated so much that no code from that is left. I have however until now used/adapted this icon and audio file:

I want to make BigTimer FOSS. But please advice me on license specifics. Do I need to use some special license to include the (adapted) files above with BigTimer? I have made an icon from the image file and that icon is compiled into the BigTimer exe. I also include some separate files in the zip: an .icl file with two adapted icons (one for each mode) and a .png of the image and a .wav of the audio. Those are used by BigTimer.exe .

edit: thanks for the feedback scancode. In the end, I chose to bypass the problem by not compiling the icon into the exe.

Description
I wanted a small, simple timer and alarm app that was very quick to set up yet had big digits. There are many timer/eggclock/alarm apps out there but I didn't find one that did exactly what I wanted. So I made it myself.
Features
- TIMER and ALARM modes
- big digits in the top left screen corner
- timer digit display phases: above 5 minutes = only minutes are shown, 5-2 minutes = M:SS, 2-0 minutes = seconds.
- when time is up an alarm sounds and a clock image pops up
Planned Features
A countup mode i.e. BigTimer counts upwards to let you keep track of for how long you've been doing something.
