General Software Discussion / Re: Java Interfaces - huh?
« Last post by Josh on December 11, 2011, 04:09 PM »
I am going through the basics of learning Java and stumbled on this page at oracle: http://docs.oracle.c...cepts/interface.html

This is where I started my search for info on interfaces and I figured, what better place to ask about them than doco?

General Software Discussion / Java Interfaces - huh?
« Last post by Josh on December 11, 2011, 03:39 PM »
I know there are some very well versed people on doco that are likely to understand this concept. Can someone explain to me how and why I would use a Java interface? I am coming from a VB/C++ background and really cannot wrap my head around why to use an interface.

Thoughts?

Does TV support view only? Also, is there a way to hide the notifications which popup with TV when controlling a remote computer?

Living Room / Google-Funded Study Says Firefox Less Secure than Internet Explorer
« Last post by Josh on December 09, 2011, 07:14 PM »

Remember when you downloaded Firefox circa 2004 because Internet Explorer was inundating Windows XP with viruses? Those days have long since passed, and according to a Google-funded study carried out by Accuvant, Firefox is now among the least secure web browsers. Naturally, Chrome is the best.

Obviously this has to be approached with a fair amount of skepticism, Forbes points to Accuvant's industry cred for objective reports on security. his particular report calls out Firefox's inability to sandbox code in the browser, thus preventing hackers and malicious code from gaining access to the rest of someone's operating system.

Do they offer an option for running your own server? Not that the services are unreliable, or that they might have some sort of security concern, but it is something I prefer to host in house, when possible.

Question for you teamviewer users. Does teamviewer require the use of the teamviewer servers or can you run your own "server" which manages your TV network of devices? I am looking for a solution similar to this. Right now, neorouter works this way, somewhat, in that I only rely on the neorouter servers to point to my server instance for management of my clients. My hope is to find a completely stand-alone solution so I do not have to rely on a third party server and can host everything on my own hardware.

I personally have no opinion, good/bad, on the buildings. Just thought they looked cool. Yeah, I see the resemblence, but like you pointed out wraith, they are how many miles away? Cool idea!

Living Room / LHC Researchers Expect First Glimpse of the Higgs Boson Next Week
« Last post by Josh on December 08, 2011, 04:38 PM »
cms_higgs2.jpg

There’s no official announcement yet--that comes next week--but word on the street and around the cafeteria at CERN says that scientists may announce that they’ve glimpsed the elusive Higgs boson at a meeting scheduled for Tuesday. Researchers at the Large Hadron Collider have been saying that they are closing on the so-called God Particle for a while now, and while a rock-solid 5-sigma event isn’t in the offing we might finally see our first experimental data that points toward a real Higgs sighting.

Why all the buzz all of a sudden? Firstly, next week’s meeting will see presentations by researchers from both the ATLAS and CMS experiments, the two main experiments at the LHC charged with finding the Higgs. That’s not particularly out of the ordinary, but rumor has it senior scientists from each experiment will be presenting, something that is usually delegated further down the chain of command.

Living Room / The WET Cart - Coders beware, you might cry

The WET Cart

"I help out design firms with 'backend' coding for websites and web applications," writes Josiah, "usually this involves anything that's not HTML/CSS or copy/paste JS."

"Every now and then, I see something... a little more involved. Recently, I was working on a client's site that had an embedded 'store' where users can purchase promotional items. Aside from the tables used for layout everywhere, there was about 750 lines of javascript to calculate the cart. I'm pretty sure the original coder didn't quite get DRY principles... but he was well versed in WET (Write Everything Twice, or in this case, 76 times) principles.

These luxury residential towers, set to be completed in Seoul in 2015, are supposed to be evocative of a pixelated cloud floating overhead. But to be honest, the only thing they remind me of are September 11. How did no one cry foul?

From higher angles the ten story tall pixelated cloud structure that connects the two 850+ foot towers certainly looks more whimsical, as I'm sure the architects at MVRDV intended it to be. But most people will be viewing it looking up from ground level. And I'm afraid from that angle it's very reminiscent of the images and events that were seen around the entire world that day. So I'm not really sure how the eerie similarities weren't spotted before this design was approved.

When it's completed in Seoul's Yongsan business district, The Cloud will feature luxury residential spaces, a conference center, hotel, fitness facilities, restaurants, as well as public and private park space and gardens. All of which I'm sure will be lovely on the inside. But from where I'm sitting, it looks like a horrible memory. [MVRDV via designboom]

I wouldn't say this is a matter important enough (most spam gets deleted quickly anyway) for mouser to lose a month of his life upgrading and porting stuff :P

I know. Mouser does a great job running the site we have and I am glad to see he knows the inner workings of this code so well. No sense wasting time on a minor fix :)

Living Room / Google Promo (Android): 10 apps for 10 cents each for 10 days
« Last post by Josh on December 06, 2011, 03:43 PM »
Each day, for the next ten days, Google will be celebrating 10 billion downloads from the market with 10 apps each day, each being offered for 10 cents each.

One billion is a pretty big number by any measurement. However, when it’s describing the speed at which something is growing, it’s simply amazing. This past weekend, thanks to Android users around the world, Android Market exceeded 10 billion app downloads—with a growth rate of one billion app downloads per month. We can’t wait to see where this accelerating growth takes us in 2012.

Developer's Corner / Re: Ribbon UI - is it really THAT good?
« Last post by Josh on December 01, 2011, 04:42 PM »
If 80 pixels is a big deal, why not hide the UI automatically? You can set it to auto-appear only on hover or when the ALT key is pressed. This actually takes up less real estate than the standard menu system with toolbars.

Developer's Corner / Re: Ribbon UI - is it really THAT good?
« Last post by Josh on November 30, 2011, 04:34 PM »
I, for one, absolutely LOVE the ribbon. If the standards for the Ribbon UI are adhered to, I.E., shortcut keys for each action on the ribbon, this can lead to a much quicker way to learn the UI and increase productivity. I had several users at my last organization who had issues with the ribbon. However, after showing them the shortcut key setup they were quick to thank me and explain to them that it is now easier to use their everyday functions.

Like others have said, the ribbon is either a "love it or hate it" item, for some reason. I, for one, look at it as a sign of progress and despise the old-style menu systems I had used for close to 20 years. This is far more intuitive and easy to use.
