Living Room / Your Greatest NEED: A Mouse-Phone Combo Shaped Like a Volkswagon
« Last post by KenR on November 10, 2006, 11:17 AM »
Think I'm kidding? See for yourself!

Unpimp your VOIP with this Volkswagen-styled USB mouse-phone, boasting LED headlights, headphone jack, 800 dpi optical sensor and an integrated condenser mic and speaker to allow for uninterrupted clickery.

Personally, I'd skip the VOIP to grab it's classier stablemate, the TVR USB mouse. For those wanting to talk and play, however, the $40 Skype-compatible device might hit the spot.

Living Room / Draw Function Graphs: A Website for Graphing Math Expressions
« Last post by KenR on November 10, 2006, 11:07 AM »
Here's an interesting site that reminds me of Math in OpenOffice. You can use the site graphing up to 3 mathematical expressions simultaneously. Hence, it is good for visually comparing as well as inspecting. You can also control the graph characteristics. Though somewhat specialized and most people probably won't use it every day, it's very handy when the need arises.

On JoTo's mention, I tried this application. While I have other utilities that provide considerable system information (and all cost money), this one is fantastic. It does an amazing number of things and gave me more information about my computer than anything else I had purchased. On the other hand, this utility is DonationWare, something near and dear to all of us. Additionally, there's no install - just a single exe that you run. Thank you very much to JoTo and the SIW developer.

Also, please, no one should expect another good idea from me by December!

Part 2 of Steve Pavlina's GOE-related interview...

You use the slogan “Personal Development For Smart People” and talk about raising levels of awareness. The majority of people in this world are probably not at a level of awareness to seek out self development materials like you produce. Many don’t have access to the Internet and few who do will ever stumble across your blog. Given these restrictions, how do you plan in the future to expand your readership and influence?

Part 1 of Steve Pavlina's GOE-related interview...

A few months ago I contacted Steve Pavlina about doing an interview. At the time he was too busy but recently he agreed to participate and today I have the first part for you.

Steve is a self development expert who largely has risen to fame through blogging (his blog is at StevePavlina.com/blog/). Personally I am big believer and executor of self development and Steve is definitely a leader in this field. I have found many of his articles and podcasts to be helpful with my own self development. I’m also impressed by what he has achieved by blogging good content day-in and and day-out. His traffic numbers in the millions of pageviews per month. Of course there is a good reason for this, his materials are powerful resources to help people become, well, better people...

General Software Discussion / SpyMe Tools: Monitors for install of malware
« Last post by KenR on November 07, 2006, 06:38 PM »
SpyMe monitors the drive and registry for the install of malware

SpyMe Tools is very useful in detecting Registry and Disk changes. If any application installs spyware, adware, dlls, programs, files, or any other type of file, picture, or program, etc. or changes the Registry's content, you will be able to see exactly where the modification occurred so you can take measures. It seems like more and more programs are attempting to install spyware, advertisements, or other garbage without your knowledge, but with this software you will know everything that is added or removed.
To detect Registry/Disk changes the program will create Dumps of the actual states of Registry/Disk. This means that at any time you can open the Dump file and view the contents of the Registry/Disk just as they were when you've scanned the Registry/Disk...

Living Room / Party games played only with paper
« Last post by KenR on November 07, 2006, 05:45 PM »
Here is a site that presents funny games for a party that you can play only using paper

Boredom begone! There exist a preponderance of games which (mostly) require nothing but pen and paper, ranging from the relatively mild Fictionary and Word Association, to the more artistic Exquisite Corpse and Eat Poop You Cat (seen previously as an online game), and finally the downright nutty Dvorak and 1000 blank white cards. My favorite, by far: the elusive other foot...

Living Room / Audio interview with Richard Stallman on GPLv3
« Last post by KenR on November 05, 2006, 11:37 AM »
Here's an interesting interview that might help to clear up some of the differences between freeware and open-source software.

Patrick Davila writes "Richard Stallman talks about the GPLv3 and why Free Software and Open Source don't always have the same goals. Some of the topics discussed are DRM, leverage with hardware vendors and dealing with a Linux kernel released under GPLv2."

Here's a cool program that allows you to determine virtually any date information you could ever possibly want to know. A few of the programs features are listed below.

Calendar Magic is an easy-to-use freeware Windows 95/98/Me/XP based program that is entertaining, informative, educational, and of equal applicability in the home and in the office. Calendar Magic has also been reported to run without problems on Windows NT/2000 based PCs, but the program has never been formally tested on such systems.
Features of Calendar Magic include:

    * Full year and individual month Gregorian, Afghan, Armenian, Baha'i, Bangla, Chinese, Coptic, Egyptian, Ethiopic, French Revolutionary, Hebrew, Hindu Lunisolar (3 variants), Hindu Solar, Indian National, Islamic Civil, Julian, Revised Julian, Parsi Fasli, Parsi Kadmi, Parsi Shenshai, Persian (2 variants), Sikh Nanakshahi and Vietnamese calendars. A user option is provided to choose between displaying/printing calendars showing each week starting on a Monday (in line with the ISO 8601 international standard), on a Sunday for North American users, or on a Saturday for Middle East users.

    * Alternative Gregorian "planning calendars".

    * A month-by-month, side-by-side comparison of any two of the 23 calendar systems listed above. The display remains synchronised as you change day, month and year values in either calendar system being viewed. Again, users may choose between displaying each month with weeks starting on a Saturday, Sunday or Monday...

Living Room / Download and play Sauerbraten (a.k.a. Cube 2), a free, open-source game
« Last post by KenR on November 02, 2006, 05:12 PM »
Here is a stunning, free first person shooter. There are versions for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Numerous screen shots will show the quality of the rendering engine. The game might take a while to download, however, as the files/downloads are over 100 MB.

Sauerbraten (a.k.a. Cube 2) is a free multiplayer/singleplayer first person shooter, built as a major redesign of the Cube FPS.

Much like the original Cube, the aim of this game is not necessarily to produce the most features & eyecandy possible, but rather to allow map/geometry editing to be done dynamically in-game, to create fun gameplay and an elegant engine.

The engine supporting the game is entirely original in code & design, and its code is Open Source (ZLIB license, read the docs for more on how you can use the engine)...

The Getting Organized Experiment of 2006 / Want to get rid of your bad habbits?

Here's a cool site that discusses habbits and how to get rid of them. The site also discusses Prochaska's and DiClemente's important Stages of Change, making the site worth a look just for that!

We all have habits---some good; some bad. What qualifies as a habit? It is a routine practice that is done in the same way for the same reason, over and over again. A habit becomes second nature and is intrinsically neither good nor bad. When a habit is negative, it hinders or harms and when a habit is positive, it fosters health, self-esteem, and interpersonal relationships...

Here's an excellent site for you to read in the spirit of our Great GOE of 2006 ...

Order Out of Chaos; Progress Out of Order

Life is very complex. There are so many things to take care of in the course of the day. Imagine, however, if there was no semblance of order to our day. Upon waking one morning, we would see our clothes strewn across the floor, books and papers piled up everywhere, without arrangement or purpose. In addition, since there would be no plan for the day, we would not know what to do first. When we did take an action, it would be out of sequence - e.g. we might dress before we showered, or have our breakfast before brushing our teeth ...

Here's a very cool site that goes hand in hand with the GOE project.

Don’t make Goals!
Hopefully that got your attention. I know there aren’t many productivity sites out there that are telling you to stay away from goals, but Relentless Productivity thinks that goals are a faceless evil that are subverting our world and destroying our lives. Well, not exactly, but they aren’t a panacea, either.

Screenshot - 10_11_2006 , 9_59_36 PM_thumb.png

Intro:

Font Creator and Font Creator Pro are from High-Logic Software. They make two applications, Font Creator (for creating fonts) and MainType (for managing them). MainType just grew up into it's second major revisions, but Font Creator is well into it's 5th and well seasoned. Both of these applications (inluding standard and pro version of Font Creator) are on sale for DC members for 50% off (at least until 11/1/06).

Who is this app designed for:

Font Creator (both standard and pro) are designed for anyone who wants to design fonts. The standard version might be perfectly adequate for your needs and I would again refer you to the aforementioned comparison chart. I have seen other application similar in function that cost several hundred dollars more than Font Creator. All of the reviews I remember seeing on Font Creator rate it 5/5. Hence, it's one of the least expensive, very capable font development applications you can obtain.

The Good
The best thing about the program is it's feature set. I previously used another font program designed for Tablet PCs. It let me quickly and easily create a font by simply writing characters on my display. The font looked bad and nothing like my hand writing, however. After studying the display, I realized the problem was spacing. While it was easy to create characters, editing them was another matter. In contast, Font Creator comes with a very complete set of tools for shaping, moving, designing, etc. font characters. These built in tools will help you manipulate and modify your font characters in ways that you might (for me definitely) not have even considered. So after creating the characters, I used Font Creator to modify them by rotating them small amounts (either backward or forward), aligning them all so their bottom, top, and centers (moving up, down, left, or right), and resizing to create a consistent set of font characters.

Modifying a character is very simple. You simply double click on the one you want from the main window. The character will come up in it's own window for editing and a transform window will open up as well that allows you to make very subtle or large changes to the character. You can adjust it manually or specify parameters, such as writing the size you want in a box. If you don't like the outcome, you simply click on the undo arrow and the last change will be undone. You can lock the aspect ratio (when this makes sense) so changes on one axis cause an appropriate modification to the other axis. Again, the features/tool found in Font Creator are extensive and roughly comparable to other programs that cost hundreds of dollars more.

The second factor is support, which is fantastic! I have nothing but positive things to say about High Logic and Erwin Denissen who has been my contact there. I have spoken with him via e-mail numerous times over the last several months. He has consistently gotten back to my quickly and been very helpful. In addition to the usual faqs, forum, and e-mail assistance, there are also written tutorials for basic and advanced tasks, which can be found at http://www.high-logi...om/fcptutorials.html. Another tutorial I was referred to at http://www.myfirstfont.com/ also recommends using Font Creator. There is also a downloadable template there which you might find useful in creating fonts.

I believe the above is particularly important because having begun to develop fonts, I have learned that is difficult, time consuming, and fairly complicated. Likewise, font development applications are quite complex. So it is important (or at least REALLY HELPFUL) to have guidance and assistance to help you over the rough spots.

Cost (particlularly with the current discount) is the third factor which makes Font Creator a very attractive option. With the DC discount, you could get the standard copy for only $40.

The needs improvement section

I have nothing against the program as it currently exists. As I said, the program revision is 5.5 and it is very mature. It should be remembered, however, that the program is relatively complex, I am fairly new at using this program, and it will likely take me weeks to months to discover things about the program I wish were different. I have not identified any bugs yet.

Why I think you should use this product

Perhaps the more important question for you to answer is "Do you want to create fonts?" It takes a considerable amount of time and you can get 10s of thousands of them free. If your answer to this question is yes, then you should use this product because of company  support, cost, and the program's feature set. It's a fantastic program comparable to others costing hundreds of dollars more. Plus, to sweeten the deal even more, with the generous (50%) discount they are currnetly offering, you can get right now for 1/2 off the usual price.

Conclusions

High-Logic software is some of the most complete, well-written, and thoughtful programs I've seen. They have two programs (Font Creator and MainType) and I own and love them both. Personal support is top-notch, they have helpful faqs and a good forum, and numerous tutorials to teach you how to do numerous tasks. Although Font Creator isn't cheap, it's far less than other comparable programs - at least the ones I have seen. Finally, while creating a font takes a lot of time and patience, Font Creator has many features that will make the task far easier and help you create exactly what you wanted. As usual, you don't have to take my word on this. Download the 30-day trial, do the tutorial I mentioned above, and see if you want to design fonts. If you do, you'd be hard pressed to do better than Font Creator or Font Creator Pro.
