General Software Discussion / Re: Most Recently Installed Programs

Similar to Nirsoft's MyUninstaller, Free Uninstaller provides an abundance of info-- perhaps everything you could possibly want to know about your installed programs.

General Software Discussion / Re: .flv thumbnails
« Last post by sajman99 on September 25, 2009, 12:21 PM »
Thanks, I should have stated that I searched and already tried those ShellEx entries without any luck--still no .flv thumbnails. It's a simple import of a .reg file, so I don't know what the heck I did wrong or why it didn't work. In any event, the .flv files play okay so maybe I'll just try to ignore the plain icon.

General Software Discussion / .flv thumbnails
« Last post by sajman99 on September 24, 2009, 10:53 PM »
Greetings, folks. I have some .flv video files which do not display thumbnails in WinXP or in other software like XnView or FastStone Image Viewer. Does anybody know how to get .flv to render thumbnails? Or is it ill-advised to do this? As always, thanks for your assistance.

General Software Discussion / Re: How can I download or record streaming audio
« Last post by sajman99 on September 24, 2009, 01:24 PM »
Increasingly, download managers are adding the capability to capture streaming media. For example, Internet Download Manager now displays a "Download this video" in what they call their "download panel" (very similar to Orbit's GetIt button). Common audio and video file types are listed, with the ability to add whatever you choose. Though the fully featured IDM isn't free, I certainly have no regrets for purchasing it several years ago.

General Software Discussion / Re: Macrium Reflect Free version updated to 4.2
« Last post by sajman99 on September 23, 2009, 04:21 PM »
Thanks for the info, MilesAhead. I checked out Macrium Reflect Free Version about a year ago, and I recall being impressed with its reliability. Presently, I'm using Seagate DiscWizard (ie. rebranded Acronis) because I have a Seagate HD and was familiar with the Acronis product line.

On the subject of free imaging solutions, Western Digital now offers their Acronis True Image WD Edition Software for those with WD HDs. Indeed, we are fortunate to have all these choices. :)

AbteriX, FileReplace looks pretty good, but... (1) I don't speak German- darn it! (2) The unregistered version--unlike MultiFind and TextCrawler etc.--has some serious limitations on the number of searched/replaced terms.

But I sure wish they had an English version so I could fully evaluate it.

Since the poster who recommended MultiFind never affirmed or denied any affiliation, I never bothered to check out the software back then. But now that I've seen MultiFind listed on software sites, I decided to take a look. Turns out the freeware "lite" version of MultiFind is an easy-to-use lightweight and functional program comparable to DigitalVolcano's TextCrawler. If I had to pick just one, I'd still give the nod to TextCrawler but IMO MultiFind is a worthwhile contender. For the record, I especially like MultiFind's "Integrate MultiFind into Explorer's Context Menu" option which aids quick searching/replacing. The Pro version is available for $24.95, but I'm sticking with the freeware version for now.

I use Nirsoft's MyUninstaller because it provides plenty of installation info, including the most recently installed programs.

The Lunascape website indicates "Browsers are not made equal...but you can have it ALL with Lunascape". From a security standpoint, I'm thinking I might not want it all. I mean, wouldn't this triple-engine browser be exposed to every Trident/Gecko/Webkit vulnerability? :tellme:

General Software Discussion / Re: VirtualProtect
« Last post by sajman99 on August 09, 2009, 04:58 PM »
MilesAhead, I hear you loud and clear. Anybody who has ever gotten burned by a software developer's claim that a feature exists (or will soon exist) tends to be more skeptical regarding so-called plans and/or roadmaps.

However, the developer of Returnil has a solid presence at Wilders where he maintains an "official" forum. After reading through the threads a bit, I noticed he seems professional and responsive to user's questions, and he has stated 64 bit support is planned. http://www.wildersse...wthread.php?t=243202

Bottom line: only time will tell if Returnil's 64 bit support is realized.

@MilesAhead: I think the Returnil folks are already addressing the 64 bit support issue.
http://www.wildersse...wthread.php?t=242742
http://www.dslreport...-Virtual-System-2009 (see bottom of page regarding The Returnil Virtual System 2010 Build 3.0.5118 where it is stated "RVS now compatible with 64-bit Windows Vista and Windows 7")

@Zero3K: Thanks, I look forward to having more specific information about VirtualProtect.

Where is the free? The sites in the above links timed out, so I couldn't read...
I share your experience and confusion. I really haven't found much specific information on this software so far. To say it's like Returnil indicates it is system virtualization software, but the devil is in the details. VirtualProtect may be brilliant software, but Zero3K (or somebody else) needs to provide more details before I will install it. I shouldn't have to email the Chinese developer to get these details, even if he were to speak better English than me. ;)

@Zero3K: Specifically, what's free and what's not free? The cache works for a limited time only? Details please?

I was surprised when AntiVir Personal identified the download file vp2.2r5.rar as TR/Dropper.Gen Trojan. BUT with only McAfee-GW-Edition in agreement (2/41=4.88%) according to VirusTotal, I suppose I'll interpret the detection as a case of heuristics gone awry (ie. false positive). Thoughts?

EDIT: OK, I now see (in the Wilders thread cited by Zero3K) this virus detection is an ongoing issue. Earlier versions of VirtualProtect were detected, virus definitions were modified, later versions of VirtualProtect are detected, virus definitions are modified...and on we go. Gosh, I love my AV. :P

General Software Discussion / Re: photo duplicate scanner
« Last post by sajman99 on August 07, 2009, 04:03 PM »
Developer Rafal Fraczek's Similar Images Finder is a free tool for finding both duplicate and similar images. The application can run in Windows and Linux, requires no installation, and renders results/matches in a .htm file.

With the current version of SIF, you can check whether you already have an image in your collection by selecting it (the reference file) and comparing others in a directory. But the developer has indicated via email (and graciously allowed me to reveal) his plans to implement a "compare all images" feature in the next version of the software. This would mean SIF would operate in the conventional manner of Dup Detector, VisiPics, etc.

Well, this is a free task management software which I've seen recommended recently. I admittedly haven't tried it yet--it's on my to-do-list. :D
It's called...uh..ToDoList and stores its tasklists in XML format. Whether or not ToDoList suits your preferences, please let everybody know which software you've decided to use.

Greetings, I just noticed MindGems has released a newer version of their Audio Dedupe (version 1.2.0.1).

http://www.mindgems....-Dedupe-WhatsNew.htm :
Added support for AAC, MP4, FLAC, AC3, WavPack (WV), Musepack (MPC) and Windows Media Audio (WMA) file formats.
Added support for FLAC, WMA and MP4 tags.
Added AIF as recognized AIFF extension.
User can now quick rename files using F2 or Rename popup menu (only in registered version).
Project modified status in program caption is now updated correctly.

Still no APE support apparently, but it looks like they are moving in the right direction--forward! Good Day, sajman99

General Software Discussion / Re: Note Taking Software
« Last post by sajman99 on July 23, 2009, 04:48 PM »
I asked A!K Research Labs about this, because it looks so close to their program Notesholder Lite.  If I understand their e-mail correctly, QuotePad is a rebranding experiment of Notesholder Lite...

When I mentioned QuotePad in a thread https://www.donation....msg169322#msg169322 some weeks ago, the similarity between QuotePad and Notesholder Lite was correctly noted by rjbull. I'm definitely glad to hear QuotePad is legitimately authorized software-- thanks rjbull for sharing the results of your email correspondence.

Is there a program that can handle very large numbers of files (say, 100K), allow me to tag individual images as well as groups and/or folders with keywords/labels/categories, store the tags within the image metadata (IPTC) so that manually moving them around will not confuse the program and quickly search and display subsets by keywords and other criteria?

Built in image similarity detection will be a plus.
If the freeware XnView is incapable of/insufficient for the task, you will likely have to step up to a commercial software such as ThumbsPlus- a full-featured software at http://www.cerious.com which includes similar image analysis.

Regarding freeware image viewers/organizers, I agree with Lashiec's comments. AFAIK XnView is one of very few offerings which incorporate image similarity detection (ie. finding non-binary duplicates). If other freeware image viewers with this feature exist, I too am interested in hearing about them.

@JohnFredC: My CPU spikes to 100% and stays there every time I launch Viewer2. The app looks rather unique, but I'll have to pass for now.

Another freeware you might try is A-PDF Text Extractor.
http://www.a-pdf.com/text : "A-PDF Text Extractor is a free utility designed to extract text from Adobe PDF files for use in other applications. There are three mode of output text: In PDF Order, Smart Rearrange and With Position... A command line version is available also to allow you to call in your program or script."

In addition to eliminating usage tracking and addressing other privacy concerns, the Chromium-based SRWare Iron already has a preliminary implementation of AdBlock which may satisfy most users. The adblock.ini indicates the implementation is based on http://fanboy.co.nz/adblock.

If a user's primary gripe with Chrome is the absence of AdBlock, SRWare Iron could be worth a look--they even have a portable version. http://www.srware.ne...ware_srware_iron.php
