Living Room / Re: (Hypothetical): If DC Grouped Together...What could be achieved?
« Last post by app103 on October 25, 2014, 07:32 PM »
We might accomplish DoCo 2.0, or perhaps not.  :-[

We'd probably accomplish too many opinions, too much discussing, and no actual decisions that are actionable by anyone. Comparable to the development of any of a number of famous vaporware projects.

In a nutshell, we'd have to bring in an outside project manager, highly experienced in dealing with large groups of fiercely independent personalities, to have any hope of getting the project off the ground. Otherwise, we will just all run around doing our own thing, waiting for someone to tell us what needs to be done and what our part in it will be.

I am sorry that I am not kidding. Just being realistic.

You need at minimum a decent third party firewall software

Keep in mind that most firewall apps pop up alerts like crazy, accusing the entire internet of trying to attack you, and letting you know that they protected you from all those "attacks".  They want to make you paranoid enough to pay and keep using their product. And even the reputable firewall apps do this.

You will want to find that setting that turns just those tin foil alerts off, first thing. Otherwise, the coincidence of the popups coinciding with your PC activities may make you wrongly believe some very innocent people are up to no good.

And people call me a douche or cheap ass for using ad blocking software. Pfft. Yeah, that's one of the reasons why I run it and never click on ads.

^^ This!  (except Project Wonderful. They are an ok ad network. )

Try to count the black dots
 (see attachment in previous post)

Furbillies! (Yes, I am an Ed Emberley fan  8))

But you are not supposed to count the dots. It's a maze full of furbillies, and you make them get out of your way by looking at them.

Thanks a lot from out team! It works! Just one feature request: notifications!

Optional! And no balloons!

Perhaps use a small toaster style alert that won't activate your taskbar.

I'm sure she'll do an eggsellent job.

I disagree. She seems to be one of those hunt-and-peck typists.

Steno keyboards don't have as much to hunt & peck.  ;)

Fine! I'll build a website for them, after the ADHD one, using this as the background.  :P

I just brewed a cup of Dunkin Donuts pumpkin spice coffee right in my mug, using a medium sized one of these:

$T2eC16JHJHcFFkRE6t,zBRh-c7t-gg~~60_35[1].JPG

I set it in the mug, stuck a filter in it, added 1 scoop of coffee (1/8 cup or 2 TBS...it's a big mug), then poured hot water over it till it started covering the grounds. Then picked it up and let it drain. The coffee came out good!  :)

I have done this with loose tea before (without the filter). Never thought to do it with coffee.

So, yeah, now I have a 1 cup coffee maker, without DRM, that cost me a whopping $0.33. And it brews loose tea, too. :D

Feature requests:

1. That tray balloon should have a check box on it to not show it to you again.

2. Remember the last Slack domain used, in the text box.

Nope, I'm using one called Awesomium. Not 100% sure what it is based on but it worked very nicely for the main functions.

From what I understand, it's based on Chromium 18, which is quite old, released back around the end of 2011. (Current version is v40.) So, this would be V8/WebKit based, not Blink.

No devices in or on your car. No scanning your license plate. No key fobs. No QR codes.

Biometrics...your finger is all you need...pay by touch. The same finger can fuel up any car you happen to be driving, even a rental car. And if your car is stolen, they don't get to take your finger with it, usually.

http://usatoday30.us...l-pay-by-touch_n.htm

And if they can move this to the trigger on the nozzle, you wouldn't have to even think about it....except in winter, when you wouldn't be able to get any gas without taking your glove off. Or when driving through NJ or Oregon, where it's illegal to pump your own gas.

Slack used by companies for internal communications, sort of a cross between Twitter and IRC, but more private. It's actually kind of cool.

One of the companies I work for has a paid Slack account and uses it a lot. There is kind of a need for me to keep this open at all times, but for Windows users, the only options available are in your browser, or via using the IRC or XMPP gateways (which both leave something to be desired).

Having to have yet another browser tab open at all times is something I'd like to avoid. Mac users, which would describe most of my co-workers, have an official dedicated Slack app they can use (very much like what Stephen has built), as do mobile users. The best they can offer for Windows & Linux users is instructions for how to create a desktop shortcut that will open Slack in Chrome. I wouldn't call that a good substitute for a dedicated app.

But I honestly don't have a great deal of optimism.

What doesn't make me very optimistic is how it was announced.

When a commercial application goes freeware, it's usually announced with great joy and enthusiasm.

This cow doesn't look very happy to be free.

General Software Discussion / Re: Ad blocking add-ons in Pale Moon 25
« Last post by app103 on October 18, 2014, 04:47 PM »
I already have Adblock 2.1.5 on my copy of Palemoon 24.5, so I guess I will stay here for a while.

You can and should upgrade Pale Moon to v25, for security reasons.

Just replace your current ABP with the edited one I linked to. Once either ABP or ABE releases their own version that officially supports Pale Moon, everything will be back to normal.  :)

It's not politics in this case. The decision to drop the info labeling Pale Moon as a variant of Firefox was for the users, so they would stop getting crap from sites about running an outdated version of Firefox. It's not outdated. The GUI may be based on Firefox 24, but the backend is very much matched to the current release of Firefox.

The issue with ABP & ABE is more related to them catching up with the changes, and hopefully they will. Otherwise someone may have to keep editing the official releases of ABP to work with Pale Moon.

I am also hoping Google gets with it, catches up, and stops treating Pale Moon as an unknown browser that needs to use the old versions of their pages. I am having to use User Agent Switcher with the Pale Moon 24 user agent to get the newer toolbar with the G+ alerts and the newer Google Images UI. Without the mention of Firefox in the user agent, they are treating Pale Moon as if it were IE 6 or some kind of crap that can't handle their newer UI.  :(

What it means is that unless and until the developers of both Adblock Plus and Adblock Edge decide to officially support Pale Moon, you will not be able to use the official versions of those add-ons and will have to rely the one I linked to, instead.

General Software Discussion / Ad blocking add-ons in Pale Moon 25
« Last post by app103 on October 16, 2014, 04:29 PM »
Users of the Pale Moon browser recently discovered, upon upgrading to Pale Moon 25, that 2 popular add-ons for blocking ads (Adblock Plus & Adblock Edge) no longer worked properly. The main complaint was the disappearance of the toolbar icon.

This issue was the result of a decision of the Pale Moon developers to stop identifying the browser as Firefox variant, and for Pale Moon to have its own unique application GUID.

In most cases this caused no issues with regards to add-on compatibility, since Pale Moon does accept add-ons with a Firefox GUID, as well as those with a Pale Moon GUID.

But with regards to Adblock Plus and Adblock Edge, there will be a need going forward for both add-ons to officially support Pale Moon, or they will not work.

You can read more about it here:

Unless and/or until both add-ons begin officially supporting Pale Moon, you will either have to find other means for blocking ads, or use this edited Adblock Plus add-on, from the Pale Moon site. Please be sure to remove Adblock Plus/Adblock Edge from your browser before installing this version:

After installing this version you will notice the return of your toolbar icon and that the add-on functions as it should.

I have heard this as a joke before, except instead of 5 pages of S, it was a few gigabytes of VB6 code. :P

From my understanding, it's only SSLv3... right?  Which shouldn't really be in use?

Well, v2 shouldn't be in use, either.

And just like the Chrome fix, you will have to put it in the shortcut you use to launch it, because it has to be done every time you start the browser. It's not a one time fix & forget.

Whoops. Yes. Good point. You need to create a shortcut for it. A crappy fix, but better than nothing.

Also watch out for external links from other apps opening in Opera or Chrome, as they will not launch your browser with the command line parameter.
