sounds like a very good idea to have the single badge that reflects the number of times you've participated.

you could always display all the individual badges you'd collected in your profile.

okay, final edit with this one. i now see that trying to fit text into such a small space isn't required - and doesn't work that well.

i guess that's why icons are icons - you do away with the text and just use a nice image instead.

i prefer hamradio's  badge style to the gradient.. i think at that small resolution it just looks cleaner.

right. i was just trying to get the words "nany" and the year on there without it becoming unreadable. after that, i thought i may as well add something for the background and a solid colour looked a bit plain. didn't bother with anything else as i think it will get in the way of the text.

but, no reason the badges should have text on them really is there. or, here's a quick idea, how about doing them so they look like those big single day calendars you stick on your desk; like the one that features in the original nany mug image.

nany128x128.png

edit:
actually, that one in the nany mug image isn't really like the real single day calendar thing (where you rip off each day).

I just have to mention this, with kudos to nudone for the suggestion.

He's talking about whether Auspex could be used to help folks who have to do a lot of HTML/XML tagging, by having replacements set up that automatically type the repetivitve bits.

Yes!

Not only that but you can have Auspex move the cursor to the right place in the string so you can carry on adding content between the tags without using the arrow keys.

One such example would be this:

htm*  could expand to  <html></html>  with the cursor automatically placed between the 2 tags. This is all available in the current release.

If the group would like me to, I can create a template set of replacements for this and similar stuff.

excellent. this is a big deal, i think...

having your own code completion functions that will follow you across any editor you care to use. i think that is amazing. (i know an autohotkey script could have done it - but i wouldn't know how, i'd have to spend all day figuring out how to move the cursor to start with.)

just a suggestion for the small icons/badges.

using DC's blue gradient bar for the idea.

« Last post by nudone on January 14, 2011, 05:21 PM »
i've got an autohotkey script that inserts time or date anywhere i type either...

qtime or qdate

i assume you could create any number of different date formats associated with a key word. you could even just have something like qt or qd if you wanted to keep it simple.

#IfWinActive
::qdate::
   FormatTime, TimeString,,yyyy-MM-dd
    Send %TimeString%
Return

#IfWinActive
::qtime::
   FormatTime, TimeString,,yyyy-MM-dd HH.mm
    Send %TimeString%
Return

Completely. MySpace may have been a pioneer of social sites but it was positively prehistoric in terms of appearance and feel. It deserves to die for its ugliness alone.

hmm, i do tend to like progress bars too. very minimal ones. it'd be nice to have a physical one for the real world (i bet you can buy one from somewhere).

thought it was just me. but it makes sense we'd all love 'em - doesn't it.

cool idea. had to stop playing it as my wrists began to ache.

i used to play "The Typing of the Dead" a lot - you got little breaks with that - which might be a good idea for Z-type to include.

That's a great idea. I'm reformatting my netbook now, so I'll look around about doing that to get started. It's what I know, anyway.

How about Presto:

ooh, that looks like just want i'd want for my netbook. going to give it a try at the weekend.

Living Room / Re: Can we stop with the diagonal screen length thing?
« Last post by nudone on January 10, 2011, 08:05 AM »
It does appear to be that 16:10 is becoming increasingly rare, which is another real annoyance.
Is this the same as saying that finding a 1920 x 1200 monitor is becoming increasingly rare?

I'd say yes.

What MAY also be a bit misleading when looking for a new large monitor, is that it the specificaitons can say 24" and so you might, reasonably, expect that to be a monitor of 1920 x 1200 dimensions BUT you'd be wrong.

1920 x 1080 is also stated as 24". There is obviously a bit of diagonal length difference but no one bothers to state it, which is another reason to hate the diagonal screen number to determine (monitor) screen size.

I've just had a look on overclockers.co.uk and there appears to be one 1920 x 1200 monitor out of a choice of about fifteen. all others are 1920 x 1080. so it looks like 1920 x 1200 is dying fast.

EDIT: Also, once you see it you cannot unsee it: The Grooveshark logo looks kind of like Hitler.
(see attachment in previous post) (see attachment in previous post)
(I suck at photoshopping images. Maybe that's because Screenshot Captor isn't photoshop...)

I made a lot of fuss in another DC thread how I never LOL...

...but i have literally just LOL'ed from that Hitler gag. Amazing. So, I better do it. here goes:

LOL !!!

(Subsonic would be fine but it requires having the "media" pc enabled to stream from. In my usual situation, that wouldn't be convenient.)

i use Grooveshark too. Good for finding specific tracks rather than radio listening. Not sure what "meta" info you get about the music (I suspect none, or very little). Also good if you are away from you own personal music collection as you can save/retrieve your own playlists in GS.

also, there are greasemonkey scripts for it. only tried one - removes the ads on the right and automatically replaces them with lyrics of the song that's playing. very handy when you want to singalong to the latest Justin Beiber hit (whoever he is).

if not commandline, maybe one of the linux variations aimed at netbooks to provide quick boot ups. or one that can quickly come out of hibernate.

unfortunately, can't recommend anything as i don't know much about linux. i just know i've seen netbooks with linux based o/s.

I'm curious. Could you explain your complaints with 16:9? I believe my current monitor is 16:10, but I heard that is rare.

It does appear to be that 16:10 is becoming increasingly rare, which is another real annoyance.

I hate 16:9 as a computer screen size as it's just dumb, there's no good reason for it other than to make "widescreen" movies and tv shows look "right" when they are played back. I mean "right" as in you don't see the black borders (top and bottom) you get on a 16:10 screen when you watch a 16:9 video.

If your computer is used primarily for watching video then I can see you might have a reason for favouring 16:9 over 16:10 screens. If you use your computer primarily for web browsing and/or "work" (looking at text or images) then you really ought to want plenty of screen height. Even an inch of extra screen height is noticeably better to work with.

So, nothing unusual. I just think that we are being sold 16:9 monitors because misguided consumers think that's the best ratio - because their vids will look "right". But anyone working, reading text or working with images will soon realise that a taller screen size would have been a better choice, i.e. 16:10. Or, at least, they'll realise that when they have the opportunity to work on a 16:10 screen, until then they'll be deluded in thinking 16:9 is fine.

4:3 still seems the best ratio to me for working on a pc, assuming that would be a very large 4:3. More screen area makes sense, there's no good reason for 16:9 unless you are a video junkie.
