You are here and here but not there or there, or is it the other way around? I guess the system merely is waiting for your re-activated profile to be accepted / updated /uploaded / whatever.

Other than that, I think most of facebook is a really weird vaste of time.

I have not yet produced any output, but I am very impressed with Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition. I made my first homepage with FrontPage 2003, and VWD 2008 Express is a lot easier and much more capable. I do not understand why you would expect it to "output crappy html", but the final version of FrontPage produced okay html code - chubby maybe, but not too fat - and it has been 5 years since then, so maybe they have learned how to do by now? I would expect so.

I'll highly recommend to take the time to wacth the 38 minutes intro video.

OK, urlwolf, I've joined the Facebook group.

I'm joined up to Facebook under my "real" name!

I guess we are talking about different groups, then, because your real name is neither April, Curt or Jose - who by now are the only 3 members of software conneseurs...  ;)

I am not too sure Mr Atkinson recently updated this list.

Adobe Dreamweaver to NVU: While this tool is a powerful WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) HTML editor, other options exist that can save money. NVU (pronounced N-view, for a “new view”) is a complete Web Authoring System for Linux Desktop users as well as Microsoft Windows users to rival programs like FrontPage and Dreamweaver. Use NVU to create Web pages and manage a Website with no technical expertise or knowledge of HTML.
-Atkinson

To my understanding NVU was abandoned 2005. One can say it was replaced by KompoZer, "Nvu's unofficial bug-fix release", but I would expect Mr Atkinson to tell so, if his work had been just a little updated.

I can tell that Archivarius now also supports .surfulater files

I prefer Revo Uninstaller and PromptUninstall
Is it the one from SpeedApps? The one you tagged as a rip-off?

Yes, but I choosed to forget about it, because I've not yet found any others quite like it. But I am of course shameful that I now have sort of advocated a rip-off, by telling that I still am using it, and I promise I will mention it no more!  :-[

I too purchased PromptPal, and is quite fond of it. However, I would have looked elsewhere if there were no rebate. For example at the brand new German ColorConsole version 1.0. At first I thought this was merely about colorizing the console, but looking at the help page, Consolen Commands, I realized it is more - this is really an impressive help page!

Give a little study to the help page, and be impressed too!

Windows XP SP3 RC 2 download on Windows Update

Posted: 20 Feb 2008 10:14 AM CST

windows xp sp3 I had been wondering whether Windows XP SP3 got lost somewhere in the Microsoft abyss, but it looks like it is alive and kicking after all. Microsoft slowly but surely rolled out Release Candidate 2 yesterday, which is available for download via Windows Update.

Like always you’ll need to uninstall any other pre-release version before trying to update to the second Release Candidate. Once you’re all set just download and run this small file (it modifies your registry) so that Windows Update will offer you the new pre-release copy of XP SP3.

The release notes don’t outline anything to die for, but I do find it interesting that Microsoft will now let users complete the setup of XP without having to provide a product key. Vista already has a similar feature, and apparently it’s gone over well enough that they’ve decided to bring it back to Windows XP. Although no one will really notice this feature unless they slipstream SP3 into their XP installation CD.

There’s still no word on when XP SP3 will be released, but I don’t think it will be before mid-March. That’s when Vista SP1 is supposed to be available to the public, and Microsoft will likely want to keep all of the focus on Vista.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

General Software Discussion / Re: Best free firewall for Windows?

A new version of Online Armor was launched today: 2.1.0.85

You can get the "pro" version with a $15 rebate, using dicount code OAFEB

list of Features and Bug fixes – In detail

General

Resizeable GUI - our customers have been asking us to resize the Online Armor GUI - now, you can.

Remove Spamshield - the previous flagging of suspect spam messages was based on checking messages for spam-vertised links on SURBL. As spammers changed their tactics, it became clear this it became clear this approach was no longer effective and so the feature was removed..

Multiple Desktop Support - users with desktop switching software could not use Online Armor as popups would appear on the default desktop and were not answerable. Now, this is solved.

Fixed bug with uninstall protection - Online Armor protects itself from uninstallation. In the recent release, some users were unable to remove Online Armor without entering Safe mode. This issue is now fixed.

Fixed unresponsive tray icon - A few users reported after changing some options in Online Armor that the Online Armor menu became unresponsive. This meant settings could not be changed. This has now been fixed

Added hotkeys disable option - Some users did not want hotkeys (me included) - so now they can be disabled

Autoruns Enhancements

Online Armor has always monitored autorun locations; The scope of protection has been significantly enhanced in Online Armor - (Thanks to Tony Klein)

Additional scan during SCW added (folders where start menu items reside).

Safety Check Wizard

Realtime update during SCW - When Online Armor first starts, a Safety Check Wizard runs. This allows the system to scan the start menu, autoruns and so on to detect components that are already installed on the computer. This step means that the user should not be inundated with popups after a restart.

The Safety Check Wizard has a local list of common files which it compares against; This has been updated to link with OASIS (Online Armor Software Information Service) in real time. What this means is that the absolute latest data will be used on each install.

Faster Saving - Saving of the configuration during the wizard has been optimised

OASIS

OASIS (Online Armor Software Information Service) has been significantly updated. OASIS 2 provides the users with this data whether or not the file has been assessed, information about what the program does, how many users have seen it and some information about what it does.

When a program runs that is unknown - you can click the "more" button to get the OASIS results for it. This might help you decide what to do as it provides aggregate information about what the other users did.

You can also right click inside programs -> File Information -> More to get information out of OASIS.

Firewall

Optimized Performance for Torrents - when using bittorrent, firewall processing created slowdowns. This issue has been comprehensively corrected. You should not see slowdowns caused by Online Armor Firewall.

Automatic Network Identification (Interfaces) - previously all interfaces were lumped in as one. Now, ONLINE ARMOR will allow interfaces to be selectively trusted/not trusted. This caters for the case of the rOnline Armord warrior that may plug into trusted/public networks. This now also includes VPN interfaces.

Manage Windows Firewall during ONLINE ARMOR Install - If the windows firewall is active, it will be disabled. If Online Armor firewall is removed, windows firewall will be reactivated.

Added firewall log viewer - Users requested the ability to see firewall logs, and now they can.

Block network connection on boot (optional) - Users requested the ability to block all traffic during boot.

Firewall Logs are defaulted to "Off" - users reported big log file sizes - since most users have neither the need nor desire to manage or view firewall logs, we believe this makes sense. Advanced users will easily find out how to turn logs on - Standard users would not even know they needed to turn them off, or otherwise manage them

ICMP traffic is now blockable per application.

Help

Our help file has been updated, and localised into Japanese and Turkish.

Video help has been added in the help file - "Show me how".

Program Guard

Install Mode added (paid version) - automatically allows trusted installers to install without further prompting.

Allow blocking of trusted programs - We resolved a bug where users could not prevent safe programs from running.

Runsafer - probaby one of the coolest features of ONLINE ARMOR allows a user logged in as Admin to run a program with lowered rights (like dropmyrights) - but automatically. We added the ability for the user to run a "Safer" program normally, or a normal program "Safer" from inside the program guard.

CPU Limiter added to control runaway processes;

CPU Affinitity control to show which processor a program may use.

You can also find the .scr file responsible for the screensaver, and double-click it. Those files are actually regular .exe files,

Thanks, f0dder. My reason for not using this obvious method is that I very often change my screensaver, and I don't care to try to remember which one is default at any given moment. = Hit the hotkey, and... "Surprise! This is your screensaver today!".

All is good! :-*

Thanks a lot, jgpaiva!
"Ctrl+Shift+P ("P" for Pause)" was just an info.

General Software Discussion / Can you recommend AVS audio and video tools?
« Last post by Curt on February 20, 2008, 09:48 AM »
For some years the AVS bundle's list price has been announced as "$189, but as a time limited offer you can have it for $69,(€49.74)". I am not too sure anyone ever paid the full amount - so much for "time limited". Now RegSoft is offering their customers to have the bundle for $49, (€35.32), so I was wondering if I should take the offer. But my CD player is broken, so this is not the right time for me to test those programs in full. But of course, I said to myself, myself, you should ask the forum at DonationCoder if they have tested this bundle and if they can recommend it.

So I do so: Can you recommend the AVS bundle? :tellme:

I can press Ctrl+Shift+S, and the Webshots screensaver will start, no matter what screensaver is default, but almost none of the other screensavers I am using have such a hotkey feature, if any. And I use quite a number of different screensavers, so I am not asking for merely a hotkey to some screensaver. I was thinking that maybe someone can write a little something that will fake Windows' timer into thinking that the time is up - so when I press this (new) hotkey Windows will think that X (seven) minutes have passed without actions, and start the screensaver. Can this be done?
 :tellme:

Edited:
I believe that fifteen years ago this feature was standard on Windows, hence the button "Pause".

I quite agree with you, dantheman; one should be carefull how to criticize such a complex design. But of course it is good to give usefull user's feedback, hints, comparings, etcetera. The problem at hand is that I get mad when someone sentence the worlds most complex browser, used by hundreds and even more hundreds millions of satisfied users, to be crap. It is not trustworthy, to say the least.
