Not sure that says much though.

It says this much to me:

BRILLIANT~! I LOVE IT~! ;D

It does sort of remind me of this thread though... Here, I think our diversions are simply a more polite way to express exactly what that graphic does, but about the topic at hand.

Might as well chime in...

> Britannica - would you buy it on (say) Kindle or Nook?

Not a snowball's hope in Hell.

I bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 to read books on. I can read PDFs or ePUBs or whatever.

But I refuse to buy books that are hosed by DRM that later on I'm pretty much guaranteed to have break on me so that I can't read them... that is IF the tyrants don't delete the books from MY device. (It has happened numerous times already. Ironically, 1984 was one of the titles deleted...)

My tablet might be double or triple (or more) the price of a Kindle or Nook, but at least I don't have to worry about being locked into any nonsense.

I simply drag and drop a book from my desktop onto my tablet (try THAT on an iPad!), then open it and read it.

It's simple. It's easy. It works now. It will work tomorrow.

For a major investment, like a set of encyclopedias? Wow... Risk being "turned off" from reading them when they decide to arbitrarily change the license on me? No thanks.

I *might* buy them for use on my tablet, but certainly not on a Kindle or Nook.

I am very happy with being able to read my books without worrying about whether or not they will work tomorrow.

Here's one where Google HAS restricted a video that is nothing more than a ridiculous parody of the TSA:

http://www.youtube.c...ch%3Fv%3DMFEBsNdiYbM

Hover your mouse over that link to check it. Now, here's the "real" URL. Click it and watch it change:

http://www.youtube.c.../watch?v=MFEBsNdiYbM

I think it may be a stretch to say that this is part of some larger policy to restrict anti-government posts - all that's happening here is that YouTube/Google are making you sign in and verify/claim that you're over 18 to view it.  While there's nothing pornographic in the video, I think it's within reason for YouTube/Google to claim it may have material inappropriate for children. One could maybe view this as censorship, but I don't think there's reason to claim that it's politically motivated.

And the "changing URL" is just a redirect if you aren't logged in/'age verified'. The same way I'd be redirected to a login page here if I tried to reply in the forum without being logged in.

I know the URL thing. I just wanted to point out that it is happening.

There are simply far too many other videos out there that are completely inappropriate for children though. If they were serious about that, a LOT more videos would be restricted to over 18's.

I'm simply no longer willing to grant the benefit of the doubt in these kinds of situations anymore given the recent absolute hostility towards freedom of speech. If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck... It's probably a duck.

What is profane? What is obscene?

For many decades, the American public has actively petitioned the United States Congress for laws prohibiting distribution of hard-core adult pornography.

Is "hard-core" merely showing penetration? Or what is it?

There will never be any kind of consensus on any of this as everyone has different ideas. He's going down a dark path.

This is not one of those things that has the possibility of ending well.

Mind you, I'm all for the decriminalization of pot and prostitution as well. Criminalizing them hasn't worked out very well so far, and oh, it's only been how many decades? Centuries? Millennia?

There's a reason why the courts don't want to touch the issue.

The way in which topics sometimes get derailed or post end up "off-topic" is in part, as far as I can see, a natural part of how different people understand/approach/perceive different topics.

That will inevitably force some topic drift as Joe sees X as it relates to Y, but John sees X as unrelated to Y, but Z is related, etc.

In discussions where basic principles, like censorship, are core, these kinds of drifts will be more natural as people try to express fundamental beliefs (metaphysical beliefs). This can cause a thread to very quickly drift into irrelevance for many people very quickly as the distance between ideas can be very great.

Those discussions that are more focused, e.g. a particular piece of file renaming software, are less likely to suffer from that broad drift, though they do tend to drift based on feature sets and related issues, which may or may not be useful to the discussion.

I don't really have much of a problem with drifting topics - it doesn't particularly bother me. I suppose that I just expect it.

Then there's Stephen... :P ;D

Oh god... here we go again... Some yahoo blathering about censorship blah blah blah...

http://dailycaller.c...ers-with-pants-down/

Internet pornography could conceivably become a thing of the past if Rick Santorum is elected president.

...

To black out foreign sites, Santorum would likely need legislative action requiring Internet service providers to use “a mandatory filter set up by the government or by the service providers,” said Volokh.

But the government could also prosecute individual citizens who view porn, and already has the legal authority to do it.

“Although the Supreme Court says private possession is constitutionally protected, it has said that private receipt of [pornography] is not protected,” noted Volokh. “You can’t prosecute them all … but you can find certain types of pornography that are sufficiently unpopular” for easy convictions, he explained.

How many data centers would instantly go bankrupt if porn were banned?

Google is increasingly either banning or restricting videos that are critical of the US government. This one was banned, then restricted, and now it seems to be unrestricted:

The TSA contacted members of the mainstream media and threatened them if they reported on the content in the video above (how the TSA body scanners can be easily circumvented):

http://www.prisonpla...rs-nightly-news.html

http://www.prisonpla...itically-flawed.html

There are more stories like it.

Here's one where Google HAS restricted a video that is nothing more than a ridiculous parody of the TSA:

http://www.youtube.c...ch%3Fv%3DMFEBsNdiYbM

Hover your mouse over that link to check it. Now, here's the "real" URL. Click it and watch it change:

http://www.youtube.c.../watch?v=MFEBsNdiYbM

This post here is complete conjecture, but you can probably understand why:

http://reasonandjest...re-is-activist-post/

Then there's a farmer that was kidnapped and tortured by the LAPD:

http://www.naturalne...tos_prison_food.html

And that story got zero press in the MSM.

Like seriously... before pointing fingers at North Korea and god knows who else, there's a lot that needs to be fixed in the media at home.

I'm not saying that China's censorship is wonderful, roses, rainbows and unicorns. But you know what they say, when you point your finger, you have more pointing back at you.

Wow. The only places I can recall food being stolen is on the very odd occasion when using communal fridges in backpacker hotels or campsites in New Zealand, but then marking your food (e.g., with name or room-number) usually seems to work.
I guess there will always be people who quite literally do not care and will steal whatever they want.

That's why the next day you bring a bag with boston creme donuts... that you have conveniently stuffed with ex-lax... :P

I don't see how PirateBox and ThePirateBay on a USB stick will help. If you're still using Torrents for filesharing, you can still be tracked by other peers, can't you?

I mean, sure it will help prevent the files from going offline due to websites being taken down, but it doesn't seem to provide any anonymity/protection from being identified.

I suppose that leaves TOR and/or VPNs and/or anonymous proxies.

I've bookmarked those Judas Priest videos for the next drinking session (sadly a whole week away).
:'-(

If you want a good laugh, check out the "Dayglo Abortions". Fair warning though, you may just piss yourself laughing! :P

Here's a taste of the hilarity:

Lyrics:

NSFW (with a name like "Dayglo Abortions", you didn't think they'd be SFW, did you?
I'm proud to be a Canadian
 Pass me another beer
I'm proud to be a Canadian
Hold my seat while i take a piss

Our prime minister sucks dogshit through his nose
His ex-wife gets brown showers from Mick Jagger
The only reason we live in fucking igloos
Is our government makes a living licking shit holes

I'm proud to be a Canadian
 Pass me another welfare check
I'm proud to be a Canadian
Hold my seat while i go out and ca$h it

I'm proud to be a Canadian
 Pass me another eskimo
I'm proud to be a Canadian
Hold my seat while i fuck her up the ass hole

And that is definitely my favourite song to play on guitar!

Well, while I've had a few, let me post a few thoughts:

http://www.youtube.c.../watch?v=-ztJpFE6cfo

Definitely one of the best.

I'm not a Judas Priest fan, but I love that track, it just sounds so ... fresh :)
wish it went on for a bit longer though ;-)

Tell me about it! It's beautiful, but too short.

hello!

I want to detect and delete duplicate files, but is there a way to be 100% that they are identical?

thanks!

The ONLY way is to do a byte for byte check, and to also check for streams.

This can be done by first checking file sizes then comparing identically sized files, then checking for streams.

You CANNOT rely on hashes as they can collide.

Streams MUST be checked, because even if the main part of the files are identical, they could have streams attached, which are normally invisible to most software.

I do not know of any software that does this, but I'm sure there is some. Perhaps someone else can chime in there.

I've got a few books on the go. The only paper book that I'm reading is:

But, I finally got myself a tablet, and am now reading a book on permanent magnetic motors, and this:

I plan to read more non-technical books (electronically) now that I have a decent reading platform (Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 - from Korea -- not the hacked down version everyone else gets. :P ;D )

I simply love having a truckload of books on my tab. It's so easy. And I don't have to deal with an BS from Amazon or Apple.  8)

Inno Setup files periodically trigger AV warnings. One of the reasons is because of compression.

Virus signatures and compression both hold a common theme: Uniqueness and maximum entropy. This is why that happens.

Still, always double-check, but just be aware that the AV methods used will always have false positives. That will never stop. (Ok, it might stop if larger spaces are used, but that becomes impractical... so it will never stop.)

A while back I'd posted about Apple and textbooks...

These companies really need to be taken down a notch. Monopolizing textbooks? WTF? Charging every student for every book?

Doesn't anyone remember when you got a book, and it had the names of a bunch of kids who had used it before you? That seemed to work ok. And the book was paid for once. Now they want to charge what?!? And fix prices while they're at it?

Education now is a joke. It's not remotely about academics anymore. It's all just "business". Shameful. Purely shameful.

The "free markets" are no longer free. Corporatism and fascism have taken over. Sigh...  :'(

Well, I must say... Just got back home after a few weeks in Asia, and my home brew is damn good! Mind you, it's pretty explosive when popping a bottle, but it's fine beer.

I should probably say, ;-} * 0.75 though, as I'm not that far ahead, but I'll work on it. ;D

Now, once I clear out the backlog of work I have, it's back to the brew story to get more and start brewing again. :D
