General Software Discussion / Re: Windows Live Sync Alternative?
« Last post by Deozaan on November 29, 2010, 01:18 PM »
Don't you know how these two handle conflicting changes?

DropBox renames conflicting files.

As I said, DropBox is perfect for your requirements except that it will always upload to the cloud (even while using LAN to sync your computers). That is to say, that it performs the internet portion of requirement #3 by uploading your files to the cloud.

anyone up for Freedom Force 10-pack? it's going for $7.49 so a copy will cost only 75¢ for this superbly fun game. just check out the metacritic review! if interested please post here or PM Deozaan.

It's $0.75 a copy and it got a 90/100 on metacritic, wow!

I'll be collecting funds and handling game distribution, so as Lanux said, either post here or send me a PM if you want in.

If anybody still wants a copy of Freedom Force, I went ahead and got it. But as a penalty for missing the deadline (causing me to front the money for all the copies myself) I'm asking $1 USD if you want a copy. That's still a really great deal as the game regularly costs $5.

Sounds like Dropbox would be perfect if you didn't have #4 as a requirement.

a mini Swiss Army knife, which one should never leave home without.

Unless you're going to a "secure" government building or a commercial airline flight.

I had a Swiss Army Knife on my keychain but took it off after doing the above too many times.

Just thought I'd mention: I'm pleasantly surprised by ProtoGalaxy. I'd never heard of it before, and it came with the Indie Energy Pack.

It's a shmup but it's co-op up to 4 players simultaneously. As you play through the levels you earn money to buy upgrades and go through the campaign. And I believe it also has an editor so you can make your own levels, but I haven't tried that yet. It would be fun to get more folks from DC on it working together to survive these hectic levels.

I hate wearing jeans but when I was forced to as a kid I'd use that pocket to keep spare change in so the coins wouldn't fall out of the bigger pocket. Or anything I didn't want to lose. It was a good pocket for chapstick, too.

Basically, anything I didn't want to lose went in that pocket.

Thanks for keeping this thread up to date.

I got today's Indie Clever Pack. Mainly because I wanted VVVVVV and it normally costs $5 anyway, so I figured it was buy one, get 4 free. I knew I'd like World of Goo (I have it on Wii and PC already, just not the Steam version until now) and Eufloria. Looks like the other two will be pretty fun as well. All in all a great pack, IMO.

And from the looks of things, I'll be getting the Indie Puzzle pack in a few days, too.

Well, I bought EVE. . . I hope it doesn't do what all other MMOs tend to do. That is feel more like work than play.

Work that you have to pay money for the privilege of performing.   :'(

Just posting to say that the multiplayer server has been updated and now health works. So now monsters in multiplayer are possible (and enabled by default, mind you).

There are bugs. It's not perfect.

Protip: Make sure you don't have your difficulty set to Peaceful (in multiplayer) or else monsters will be invisible, but they can still hurt/kill you.

I liked EVE enough to make a couple of demo accounts over the years, but I personally have a hard time justifying renting a single game for $10-15 a month (i.e. all subscription-based MMOs).

I've come so close to buying EVE time and again that I just might cave in this time and get it. It's good to know that I can cancel and re-subscribe to my account at any time and my data will be there. And that I can "gain XP" even while logged out. But dang! that sure is an expensive rental plan!

Borderlands - $9.99
- Very much a group experience... a shooter with RPG elements.  Get it so I have more people to play with!

Shows up as US$14.99 here, (%50 off).

That's strange. Shows up at 50% off here, too, but for $9.99. Regular price is $20.

If you want it at the $9.99 price, I'm sure there is someone (me) who would be willing to work out a deal with you involving gifting and PayPal. :)

Don't forget about the wish list promotion:

Each day during The Give & Get Sale, Steam will be making dreams come true by giving 30 folks the top 5 games on their wish list.

All you have to do is make your list!

The Give & Get Sale is from today (Nov 24) to Nov 29.

EDIT: I just found out you can put Portal 2 on your wish list!

Living Room / Re: Wi-Fi Makes Trees Sick!
« Last post by Deozaan on November 24, 2010, 06:22 AM »
Funny, when I was in tech support I thought it was the other way around: Deciduous trees interfere with WiFi.

Pine needles just so happen to vibrate at 2.4 Ghz, which can interfere with WiFi signals which typically use a 2.4 Ghz frequency. Or something like that.

I wonder if that's related. I wonder if the trees are sick because they are somehow intercepting all the rotten things on the internet. :-\

If you believe that stuff about Messages from Water then imagine a trillion billion negative messages being broadcast simultaneously and pine trees are naturally in tune with the signal, so they get them all.

It's late/early so I'm having a bit of a hard time getting that concept to come across the way I want it to. I hope it makes sense.

Where exactly does that brown building disappear to?

My wife just walked into the room while I was reading this post and saw this:

Phoronix has a couple of (badly produced) quick & dirty vids to give you an idea of what this performance boost will look like.

Her: "Quick and dirty videos?" in a tone of disgust.

Me: "It's not what you think! 'Quick and dirty' is a phrase that means hastily put together!"

Her: "It better be!"

Thanks for getting me in trouble, 40hz! Next time mark the thread NSFW! Not Safe For Wives! Pretty funny how that sentence could be interpreted as a euphemism when taken out of context.

;D :D :P

Oh, and that kernel patch sure sounds interesting. I'll probably wait until it comes built in before I try it though.

Living Room / Re: Anyone using Nuance's 'Dragon Naturally Speaking' or equivalent?
« Last post by Deozaan on November 22, 2010, 01:24 AM »
I have a friend who is dyslexic and not very computer literate (to put it nicely) and she uses and very much likes Dragon Naturally Speaking.

Of course, since I don't use it I can't necessarily recommend it myself. And saying she loves it doesn't necessarily mean it's awesome, either. She just might not know any alternatives exist and may just be happy that she doesn't have to attempt typing anymore. On the other hand, it just might be awesome after all.

So take that for what it's worth.

Good luck with your carving and bleeding.

This doesn't look good (emphasis added by me):

On Thursday, the Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously approved a bill that would give the Attorney General the right to shut down websites with a court order if copyright infringement is deemed “central to the activity” of the site — regardless if the website has actually committed a crime. The Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA) is among the most draconian laws ever considered to combat digital piracy, and contains what some have called the “nuclear option,” which would essentially allow the Attorney General to turn suspected websites “off.”

Speaking of Apple's UIs: Am I the only one who can never get an iPod to work properly? The stupid wheel thingy either doesn't scroll through the list when I circle it with my finger or on the rare chance it does register, it scrolls 3/4 through the list when I just want it to go down one spot! ARGH!

When I saw the subject/title of the post asking me to guess before clicking on it to read it, I figured maybe it was a porn shop disguised as a coffee shop on the outside.

After seeing the picture, I might not have been far off. . .
