Hmmmmmm wonder if you'd get a headlight reflection right in the eye from that thing?  I bet it doesn't even point North. :)

Hmmmm, when I first saw the subject line I thought men had found a way to retaliate for female ornate nail decoration.

If she is doing the decorating herself, give her a computer that refuses to connect to the internet, loaded with all the geeky software you can get your hands on.

At least that's what my dad did to me and it worked. I don't even paint my nails any more, nevermind doing designs and pictures on them like I used to.

I have to wonder how people can work in those nail shops.  A paint line seems less hazardous to your health.  Maybe they wear a gas mask?  Man!! Those fumes are killer!! :)

Do they make a pair of disco balls to hang from the rear view mirror?  Dice would be bad because I'd be tryin' to roll a 7 while driving. :)

This NirSoft utility might be useful for managing the context menu and extended context menu.  Haven't tried it yet myself though.

Finished Programs / Re: IDEA: Open command prompt at current directory
« Last post by MilesAhead on June 16, 2010, 04:56 PM »
http://www.favessoft.com/PromptHere.zip

It uses a hotkey rather than a context menu.  Should work on both 32 and 64 bit Windows.  At least it works for me in Vista64 and W7 32 bit.

edit: one thing different than most "command prompt here" type utilities is you can open more than one prompt.  Say you have \temp and \temp2 under C:.  Highlight them both and hit the hotkey.
You'll have a prompt for each with that folder as the current directory.

edit2: there's no unicode support. I provide source in case some may wish to investigate how to add unicode support to the program.  It's done in ahk.

General Software Discussion / SrtFix 1.1
« Last post by MilesAhead on June 16, 2010, 01:59 AM »
I don't know how common this is, but I ran into an .srt subtitle file that would not load in any player or even subtitle program.  Somehow all the commas ',' in the time lines milliseconds were replaced with periods '.'.

I'm not big with regular expression search and replace. It was just faster to write an AutoIt3 program in case this should pop up again.

It simply reads the .srt file listed on the command line, substitutes ',' for '.' found on even lines, and writes it back out to filename.srt.fixed.  The original is not altered.

Usage: SrtFix filename.srt

You can download it here:

yeah, it's a lie - you always have to pay somehow :)

And you never own beer. You only rent it.  :D
So, it can be used for a hire purpose  :o

Reminds me of this cartoon in Playboy.

Oh, I see. You only read Playboy for the cartoons.  ;)

Absolutely.  After all, there's no sex in the thing.  Unless you get off on porcelain figurines.  Look at those white porcelains with the black gloves they have all over the magazine.  Then look at the pictorials.  They air brush the latter to look like the former.

Although now and then there's a pic from a movie with a hot actress.  But the studio shoots aren't worth turning the page.

edit: I only subscribe when they offer one of those 12 issues for $16 postage included specials. Since TV Guide doesn't have much in the way of program descriptions anymore, you need something to read in the can. :)

edit2: actually, the real reason is I keep hoping for another Woody Allen short story. heh heh heh

Living Room / Re: What the heck has happened to Google search?
« Last post by MilesAhead on June 12, 2010, 08:47 PM »
I don't particularly have anything against google. But it has replaced the verb "to search" using a web based engine.  If for no other reasons than nostalgia and breaking a habit, I have AltaVista set as my default search engine.  In (I know it's a bit ironic) Google Chrome, I have it set to use google if I preface the search with the keyword 'g'.  It took me a couple of days to get used to the look of AltaVista results.  There is some ad infiltration but not as pronounced as google results it seems.

Also I get fewer of those pages with a bunch of keywords and no content.  But I can't give you any numbers.  The results just feel less tainted.

Everyone uses the phrase "free beer" but I haven't found any in real life. :)
It must be one of those abstractions I heard about. :)

That makes me think of a cool name for a calendar program that automatically puts things off for you.  Crastinator Pro. Or you could get the open source version Crastinator Free.

And for those who have constipation....Crapinator Pro. :)

I would think constipated it would be CrapFree. :)

is that free as in free beer or free speech ? . . .

If I had to I could probably get by with 3.  LastPass, XMarks and AdThwart.  The first 2 I may be able to lose if I didn't still use Firefox.  Just use the built-in google sync. I'm not sure if it does passwords as well as bookmarks. I haven't set up a google account mainly because every now and then I try to cross sync all the stuff so I'll have it in Firefox.

But the single exe browser is next to dead. Many dislike the idea of running 1/2 dozen processes to do one job, but Everyone hates waiting for the app to get up off the disk.  They're all following suit now.

This thread has turned to crap. ;D

Reminds me of this cartoon in Playboy.  This flying saucer is roving over the treetops with an alien and his wife on vacation.  The husband says to the wife,
"It's a planet where everything they eat, turns to sh*t."

I couldn't restrain myself. I had to also comment on videohelp.com. It's only fair I praise what works well since I nag about the features I want/need. :)

It's nice to have a dependable app like this.  I've found the settings that work well for me.  Now it's just a matter of choosing the source and destination folders and hitting the Backup button.

My impression at this point is that AutoIt3 does unicode, but cmd.exe does not.  However I can't really go to great lengths to test it. I'm not going to install a different version of Windows, for example.  But if someone with a non English version of Windows wants to mess around and see if we can find out the fix, that's fine.  As it is now I've added a link to the unicode info page I found on the web how to set cmd.exe prompt, to the Readme.

I have a shortcut on my desktop that I set up following those instructions but I don't think it will tell me anything since I'm on an English version of Windows anyway.  Someone else needs to run the trials.

edit: The basic theme of my site since it went all donationware is it's software I wrote for my own use, that others may use at their own risk. (I think in all or most of the Readme files I have a note to that effect.)  Obviously I don't have a testing department.  If there's a bug or some other issue I think I can fix with a reasonable effort then I'll try to find a work-around or solution. But there's no promise of support.

5992
If I use just about any text editor to open up the batch file I created in DOS, it thinks it's ANSI and garbles it. (see attachment in previous post) So ummm, I guess it is ANSI, so never mind!  :-[

I still think there has to be a command prompt out there that automatically adjusts for unicode and code page or however it works.  otoh in Linux you can get all kinds of free GUI based console shells for free.  Seems like on Windows if they stick a menu on top of the window frame they want $30 for it.  So a self-adjusting freebie may not be out there.

Somebody that's big into parsing maybe that would be a good coding snack. :)
5993
Trouble is to test something you really need the platform. I don't really have the space to keep a guinea pig machine in the corner.  As it is I have 2 PCs with an old kvma switch with PS/2 mouse, keyboard and CRT monitor.  The paint is worn off the HP wheel mouse where the index finger clicks. I can see inside the thing.  But, hey, it still works. :)

I finally changed the settings in Windows so I can launch without double clicking.  Save a bit of wear and tear on my index finger.

5994
The cmd /u? I didn't have to do anything special.

I don't know man. I just followed the instructions on the page and it seems to work. I didn't try all the permutations.  I'm not on a non English system, so I'm probably not the guy to test it.
5995
So the reason it gives me no problem in Windows 7 x64 is that I have a U.S. version?
 (see attachment in previous post)
Screenshot posted for your amusement. Yes, I still use the old COPY CON and Ctrl-Z method sometimes. :)

See my previous post.
5996
When I follow the instructions on that Unicode page I posted, making a cmd prompt using Lucinda font etc... it works on the command line.  At least with the mçfilè.txt file by itself at any rate.

edit: the prompt seems to be persistent... keeping the code page setting (I assume, since the thing seems to work.. sends the file to the bin) it may be worth just making a prompt for stuff where you will use non English characters.  There must be a freebie someplace where all this is automatic. I can't believe we're the first to run into it.
5997
The funny thing is the whole program is only 20 lines of code.  To get it to work with non English environment will probably end up being 80 screens. :)

If daddydave and the guys at AutoIt3 forum are right

I don't know enough about the subject to have an opinion but it interests me and I'm glad you're digging into it.  I'm thinking this probably impacts the command line mode of my NANY 2011 project as well.

What if the command is launched from FARR and the command line args go there?

majoMO's TestCmdLine example seems to work fine from FARR.
edit: well, the filename looks like it should. I just pasted from the page here.
But I get some sort of transparent window that disappears only when I close FARR.
Who knows?

5999
If daddydave and the guys at AutoIt3 forum are right and the issue is the command prompt, maybe this page will be more helpful:

http://www.dpawson.c...l/sect2/Unicode.html

Supposedly it fixes up the command prompt to deal with UTF-8.

edit: I've been looking around for a freeware command shell for Windows with unicode support but so far I haven't found anything.

I'm on Chrome 6.0.427.0.  Also up to 6 extensions(because I gave in and started using Speed-Dial.)  So far the only weird thing is I get the spinning wheel mouse cursor at times.

You must be running close to bare bones afa extensions go?
