Living Room / Re: Unbelievable 3D Holographs (on 2D surface) from Zebra Imaging
« Last post by Deozaan on December 09, 2010, 06:19 AM »
looks like it could be the precursor to real 3d tv, i.e. not that crap we have now with the glasses. well, maybe in fifteen years or so.

This is slightly off topic, but have you seen any news about the Nintendo 3DS? It has 3D without the glasses, but the effect doesn't show up on video like these holographs do. Though, from what I understand from the second video, the true effect of the holographic images don't quite show up on video either.

I'm still not sure how a 3D TV with an effect like these holographs would work. I'm making a lot of assumptions here based on what I saw in the videos, but it seems to me that these holographic images are essentially the same idea as those old baseball cards that would show 3-4 frames of an animation based on the viewing angle. The difference is that these have a lot more "frames" and work in four directions rather than just two. And they're able to render all the "frames" from the 3D CAD (or whatever) model.

Or, in other words, they have potentially hundreds of virtual cameras to take pictures at any angle they want. How are they going to do that with TV and movies? Also keep in mind that the 3D perspective is gained as you move around (or the screen's angle is rotated), which doesn't happen much in standard TV viewing.

While the guy in the second video did say they have this technology working with moving/real-time video I imagine it only works with fully 3D rendered models, e.g. not films of reality. So I think perhaps Nintendo may be more on the right track when it comes to 3D TVs without the need for glasses.

It sure would be cool to have some holographic panels like these for "faux windows" hanging on the walls.

Agree or disagree with what? There doesn't seem to be an opinion put forth in the article that I could see. It seemed rather matter-of-fact and neutral to me.

In my opinion WikiLeaks should not be censored, regardless of whether I agree with it or not. I'd make the same argument for a website belonging to the KKK. However, I believe that these DDOS attacks are not helping the cause. They're just going to cause governments to seize more control of the internet to "protect" us from "cyber terror" attacks.

Unfortunately Samarost 2 isn't included in the Steam activation, but that game was never really a part of the original bundle in the first place. It was just a bonus thrown in after the fact.

And it looks like there's a Humble Indie Bundle 2 in the works.

that's cool! i wonder what other titles will be on the roster this time around? :D

I'm guessing it will include another game from Wolfire. Other than that I haven't a clue. But hopefully it will have Steam activation, too.

Hi folks,

I just got an e-mail saying that I can now activate the Humble Indie Bundle on Steam.

Awesome!

And it looks like there's a Humble Indie Bundle 2 in the works.

I remember how cool it was when those little "holographic" cards that you twist left & right (or up & down) to see an animation/3D effect were amazing because they had been improved to 7 or 8 frames. But now look at where we are:

Living Room / Fast Food: Ads vs. Reality
« Last post by Deozaan on December 08, 2010, 06:21 AM »
Everyone knows that fast food never measures up to the photos of what's advertised, but now we have photographic evidence!

So, I went to some fast food places (I won’t say “restaurants”, just “places”), and picked up burgers/tacos, so I could compare them with the ads. (I love little projects like this…)

I brought the “food” home (different stuff over 3 nights), tossed it into my photography studio, and did some ad-style shoots, with pictures of the official ads on my computer next to me, so I could match the lighting/angles/etc.

This guy is pretty funny, but I have to (and hate to) admit it was a bit "tldr" between the pictures for me. I'll blame my impatience on it being way too late/early and having not slept yet.

Google does the same thing to me. I always have to adjust my settings to display more than 10 results per page, but somehow it always eventually gets reset back to 10 results, even though I'm logged into my Google account. It ticks me off.

EDIT: In fact I just tried it again. I go to the settings page and set it to 100 results and click save. Then a pop up says my settings have been saved. Then it takes me back to the Google search page and only shows 10 results. ARGH! It used to at least keep my settings for a search or two, but now it doesn't even save it long enough for a single search.

Living Room / Re: "Check mail every ??? minutes"
« Last post by Deozaan on December 07, 2010, 03:56 AM »
Since I typically use Gmail, I just leave a window/tab open to it most of the time. But since I also use Google Talk and have an Android phone, I often get notifications through those before Gmail updates itself.

But back when I used a client on my machine and downloaded mail from the POP server, I set it to check every 5 minutes. That was even on a dial-up connection.

Also, I have never used Outlook, except as required by various employment, and I have no idea what settings they used for e-mail there.

I seem to get a lot of letters that aren't even in any of the words. Letters that aren't in many words to begin with, such as X.

A nice link that explains one of the *big* problems with FB from a social contract perspective.

http://www.wired.com...azine/16-11/pl_brown

I dunno. I don't have a problem removing friends. I've done it before. And there are plenty that I've hidden their status updates from showing up in my feed or whatever it's called.

But I'm one of the people that still claims to not "get" social network websites. I do have Twitter and Facebook accounts. I find I post more on Twitter than on Facebook, probably because I have different "friends" on that account. Also, my Twitter is relatively anonymous, whereas Facebook has my real name and real-life friends/acquaintances.

But Twitter has its own problems.

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows Live Sync Alternative?
« Last post by Deozaan on November 30, 2010, 02:05 PM »
Oh yeah, that is one important thing: Dropbox needs to be connected to the internet at all times on both/all computers for LAN sync to work. That's kind of disappointing.

Off-Topic reply about a "fruit pad"
Being able to get to things from a smartphone is also a big plus. Never saw the point of it until the first time I desperately needed to get into something and all I had on me was my overpriced "California fruit phone."

My brother has a "fruit pad" and the coolest feature it has is the ability to VNC/Remote Desktop to his Windows PCs from anywhere (with an internet connection, of course). ;D

That's happening to me, too. Though I hadn't noticed it not moving at all if I moved slow. But that might be because I didn't play long. The mouse issue was too bothersome so I didn't even get into the game from the main menu (I did play around in the menus a little bit). :-/

Freedom Force is unusable due to a problem with the mouse.

Is that the problem where the mouse moves extremely fast horizontally but extremely slow vertically? (Or was it vice versa?)

I think I spent about $20 (on myself).

Oddly almost none of the games for sale were of particular interest to me or were too expensive. I bought 3 of the Indie packs, EVE, Freedom Force, and... That's all, I think.

And I didn't win the wishlist giveaway.

Well Steam Sale has been and almost gone, and I've not bought anything!

Some good games on offer, but I already have most of them, and the few I'd have gone for were not quite cheap enough to tip me over the edge.

But what about Monkey Island 2 for $2.50? I noticed it's on your wish list. Perfect time to pick it up.
