N.A.N.Y. 2011 / Re: NANY 2011 Pledge: Duplicate Photo Deleter
« Last post by Deozaan on December 22, 2010, 12:31 AM »
CARP! I wish I'd known about this yesterday. I just moved 3,000+ photos into the same directory on someone's computer because they were spread all over, and there were plenty of duplicates, but sometimes the filesize didn't match. So instead of going through every one comparing filesize and timestamp, I just had TeraCopy automatically rename the naming conflicts.

Is there any way this app can find duplicates if they don't have exactly the same name?  e.g. PIC-1028.jpg & PIC-1028_2.jpg.

General Software Discussion / Re: I want a game for Christmas: turn-based
« Last post by Deozaan on December 22, 2010, 12:20 AM »
Just give in and get Minecraft. It's not turn based, but you can set the difficulty to Peaceful and no monsters will show up and it will be very hard to die properly, unless you just can't resist an urge to swim around in magma.

DC Gamer Club / Re: SteamPrices - a better way to shop for bargains on Steam?
« Last post by Deozaan on December 22, 2010, 12:16 AM »
Wow. Civilization 5 is $50 in US, or $30 in the UK.

Guild Wars: Eye of the North is $20 (on sale!) in the US, or $10 in the UK.

Looks like I may have to find someone in the UK.

Thanks for that link! Very useful.

It's not always just artificial region restrictions. Some games are censored in certain countries, but if someone buys the game in an uncensored country and gifts it to someone in a censored country, they get to play the uncensored version.

General Software Discussion / Dirpy lives!
« Last post by Deozaan on December 20, 2010, 03:57 AM »
UPDATE: Dirpy lives! Hooray!

ORIGINAL THREAD:

Dirpy was a site where you could paste in the URL to (for instance) a YouTube video and it would give you options to download the video or just the audio, in different formats (IIRC) and different qualities. It's been mentioned here at DC a few times (here, here, here, and here). It was awesome. But now it's dead.

The Last Dance
It is with great heaviness in our hearts that we have decided to discontinue Dirpy. Sadly, we lack the resources to continue improving and growing Dirpy in the manner you all deserve.

It was incredible and humbling to see Dirpy grow so much so quickly. Your kind words and feedback were inspiring, and we're happy we were able to build something enjoyed so thoroughly by so many.

It was a blast, guys, it really was.

All the best,
Team D

I'm sad to see it go.

Is there anything else out there that does this as well as as easily (or better?) than Dirpy did?

General Software Discussion / Re: Learn how to donate without paying!!

it staggers me that folks would spend, say, an hour clicking some dumb tab to earn the charity 10c.

I think you're missing the point of the Chrome for a Cause.

As I understand, if all you do is open a billion tabs then you will probably be "disqualified" for gaming the system. The idea is that you probably open and close a lot of tabs during the day during your normal browsing routine. So wouldn't it be great if by just doing what you do every day your actions could contribute to a charity? With no extra effort or money on your part (aside from installing the extension and telling it which charity to donate to)?

It certainly makes what is potentially otherwise meaningless and generally a waste of time do some good for once.

There was a ~2 minute segment in a Minecraft video where the player met a little slime creature. That short segment inspired this song/video.

That's cool!

That's strange. I have the opposite problem. There's a spreadsheet made in Excel that when opened in Calc cannot edit some cells that are editable in Excel.

One of these days I'll read an article online about some poor sap in Illinois who was crushed under the weight of a collapsed tofu book case and I'll know exactly who it was. . .

The Minecraft website has been updated today. It looks much better and even features a new introductory video.

I've updated the first post to include this video:

Google Chrome have something similar: Install an extension that counts how many tabs you open. The more you open, the more gets donated to charity:

Only from Dec. 15th (today) to Dec. 19th.

Living Room / Re: How I’d Hack Your Weak Passwords
« Last post by Deozaan on December 15, 2010, 02:12 PM »
Oh the Irony! My LifeHacker (Gawker) account was just compromised, and the login details were used to get into my (old) Gmail account and send spam to everyone in my contact list.
:( can you recover them? Recovery questions and whatnot? Or get a new password via the 'forgot your password?' system?

My login details were not changed. In fact, I think my account wasn't actually logged into by a person. I think my credentials were just used to authenticate a robot to grab my contact list and mass send spam to 10 people at a time (or whatever) without actually signing in to the Gmail website. But that's just a guess. I could be completely wrong about that.

But anyway, yeah, I just signed in, Google alerted me of suspicious activity and recommended to me that I should change my password, which I did. I also removed everybody from my contact list since I don't use that account anymore (for sending e-mail), in case it somehow gets compromised again.

Now I'm using a password manager and going crazy with the password generator. So far I've generated passwords using Alphanumerics + Special Characters that were anywhere from the "lowly" 20 to "insane" amount of 40 characters long. Now I just have to hope beyond hope that my password manager never loses it's database or becomes compromised.

So one of the features added (somewhat) recently was the ability to use custom graphics packs. I've just been using a customized Painterly Pack (slightly modified in an image editor for personal taste).

But this one takes the cake for creativity:

The only catch is that it uses higher resolution textures than Minecraft natively supports, so you have to patch MC to enable the "HD" textures.

ScribbleCraft Texture Pack

And speaking of the Painterly Pack, they've just released a Christmas Themed texture pack.

Awesome! And it includes the soundtrack to Machinarium, Revenge of the Titans, and a mini-album for Osmos.

Also, I haven't played it yet, but it appears as though Cortex Command has received it's first update in over a year, released with the HIB2. :D!

Another way to program for all 3 platforms at once is to use something like Adobe AIR, Flash, or javascript (web app that works offline).
5920
Yes, it's true.

I had an old gmail account with the same details as an old Gawker account and woke up today to find lots of people telling me I was sending spam.

Sure got me to finally pay attention to How I'd Hack Your Weak Passwords. (I just noticed that article was from LifeHacker, oh the irony!)

I'm currently investigating http://www.Lastpass.com/ and http://www.PassPack.com/ as a result.

My friend really loves PassPack, but I think I prefer LastPass, since it has browser extensions and seems like "less work" once you figure out how to use it. Now my passwords are 20+ characters long and different for every site.

Developer's Corner / Re: Tabbed Plaintext: Good or not-so-good idea?
« Last post by Deozaan on December 14, 2010, 02:10 AM »
Do you want it to actually create the tabs and pages in ASCII like that, or were you just using ASCII to demonstrate what you wanted?

If you really just need a tabbed text editor, why not use something like Sublime Text, Edit Pad, or NotePad++?

I just found out about a nifty web application called DropMocks.

Basically just drag and drop a bunch of images onto the web browser and it will create a gallery and give you a link you can share with others so they can view it.

I made one real quick out of some funny pictures I had lying around:

The interface is really clean and simple and it just works. The only downside is that image files are limited to 900Kb each.

Edit: Added screenshot.

I still think the image in the original post is of much higher quality than the ones posted here done with 2D drawing applications or automatically generated from data. That's why I mentioned a 3D modeling program.
