General Software Discussion / Utility to search XP registry using keywords?
« Last post by superboyac on October 07, 2006, 04:14 PM »
What's a good utility to search the registry using keywords, and gives a list of results, similar to searching for files on a disk?  The regular regedit can only find keywords one at a time, but I need something that will return a list.  Thanks.

Note Taking Software / Re: SuperboyAC's Notetaking Software Roundup #1

Hi SuperDuperBoyac.
I have to say you've done an excellent job of pulling together your review from what was the longest forum thread I've ever been involved in. I haven't checked recently and wouldn't be surprised if it is still going. ;D

I've been torn between being extremelly busy and having two short breaks this past month and have only just read your entire review. I'm also a bit behind in posting on my blog and want to mention your review asap.

A few comments.
  • The Feature Matrix. Surfulater uses HTML Templates for all of its articles. These can be edited or new ones added. It is a little involved at present, but will become easier in future. I figure SUL should get a tick for its templates.
  • In the next release (V1.99.0.0 out any day now) you can edit the Style Sheets and add new ones. Two are provided.
  • Tags are planned
.
Thanks again for a job well done.

Nevf, I'm really glad you liked it.  I was concerned about about my Surfulater portion of the review because your program is evolving the fastest out of the three, and I know that each new release has significant changes in it that will make any review soon outdated.  I'll be sure to put a tick next to templates for you when I redo the roundup (maybe mouser can stick one in now?).  I'm not sure, but I think the templates are a big deal to some users.

General Software Discussion / Re: foobar...honestly...WTF?! WTF?!
« Last post by superboyac on September 27, 2006, 10:57 PM »
superboyac: can you post some info on how you have configured foobar? I used to use winamp, but after realizing that I don't care about skins and don't use visualizations these days, I've switched to foobar. Default setup seems pretty okay to me, although I wouldn't mind albumart or something :)
I'll attach a screenshot of something I've managed to muster together in the past few days by stealing from others' configurations.  If you like it, I can send you the files to put it together, but there are a couple of minor steps involved.  Here's the screenshot:
ac-foobar.png
There is A LOT of scripting in what is in that screenshot.  I learned just enough to tweak it a little to my tastes.

By the way, I figured out why the foobar forum is such a major pain in the ass to use:  when you search for a keyword or something, it just returns a listing of threads that have that keyword in it.  It doesn't direct you to the actual post that contains the keyword.  And a lot of the threads are several pages (some even over 100 pages), so it's next to impossible to find anything.  What a garbage forum.  I wasted a lot of time trying to find answers.

100 pages in that thread? Good god. Well, I looked through a few. Very little seemed particularly different or cool. I did like the album view in the playlist and the heirarchical media library (explorer-like). There was also mention of color coding in playlist as tracks end, for low bitrate files, etc. which seems novel but not really something I think I'd get much use out of.

My biggest question is whether you can easily save full configs. I mean let's say a "skin" or "template" or "config" consists of a layout, but the layout is dependent on several plugins I may not have. Can you easily package up all dependent files to share with others? I would imagine there's an easy way to share configs, but if it involves much more than equivalent Winamp skinning I can't say I'm inclined to fiddle with it. There just doesn't seem to be much real benefit.

Also of vital, vital importance to me: I'm sure it can read the Shoutcast directory, but does it have basically all the same online content as Winamp, like XM Radio? If not, no deal. Free streaming media rules. :D

- Oshyan
As far as saving full configs, I don't think you can do that.  However, it seems like some of the components that make up the configuration have import options that you can use to import some aspects of the configuration.  A lot of the files can be found in the forum.  Also, many people post their scripting codes for the customizations they have made, which can be cut/pasted into the appropriate areas of your own preferences.  So it's not a one step solution, but it's not that bad either.  What's worse is trying to find anything in the forums.

As for plugins, there's a foobar component that will allow you to use Winamp DSP plugins, in case there isn't the plugin available for foobar.  I don't know about streaming shoutcast, i would imagine it's available since it's such a popular thing.  I use the winamp dsp plugin to use DFX.

So the question then is - if you don't have some crazy audio setup or automation needs or whatnot - what is the real advantage of Foobar? Why should I use this instead of say Winamp? Sure it's "lighter", but it seems a lot like the Opera vs. Firefox thing - in order to get all the Winamp functionality I'd want out of Foobar I'd have to use a bunch of plugins anyway, so it may not be so light anymore, and certainly is more difficult to setup. Opera and Winamp both work and have tons of functionality "out of the box".

I'm sure making converts of people isn't a priority with an app like that and I'm not asking for evangelism, but I do wonder sometimes if I'm missing something good. :D

- Oshyan

I'll answer this from my perspective.  I used Winamp for almost 10 years (until a couple of days ago!).  I've known about foobar for a few years, but like you, I had no real motivation togive it a good try because Winamp was pretty great.  But after seeing some screenshots of what people are doing with foobar, I just had to try it.  I don't think it's like Opera vs. Firefox, because while the plugins for foobar are important, the biggest advantage is the ability to script and essentially design your own music player.  Check out this thread to see what people have been doing with it:

I'm totally sold on foobar

Thanks for the help guys.  That columns ui plugin is essential, mouser, good find.

Vegas, you're right, foobar is very deep.  I had no idea it could do the things it's capable of, my goodness.  You can basically make your own music player, just the way you want.  Maybe someday, I'll spend a week and design the perfect one for myself.

What I wish for, besides better documentation, is an organized, central place to find user settings, scripts, plugins, etc.  It's a pain in the ass to find anything.  And searching their forum sucks because of the way it shows search results.

An amazingly powerful program, though.

I know I have a lot of posts and threads to catch up on, and I should be studying right now, but I was just checking out foobar, and I like it's features...

However, trying to configure this thing the way I want is making me lose my mind.  Freakin A!  I'm no slouch with computers, but this is just insanity.  Am I really stupid, or is trying to find the answer on "How to's" for foobar an extremely illogical and frustrating experience?!  I've been on the forum, the wiki site, various plugin places, and read the FAQ's.  Almost all of them all completely uninformative.

It took me an hour to figure out where the volume slider was, and then I wanted to actually have a volume slider visible on my main UI, so apparently there's this plugin I need "foo_uie_volume", which is NOWHERE to be found.

Then, on the freakin main website, they have these nice screenshots showing how the various albums in a playlist can be colored separately.  But is there any documentation on how to do it anywhere?  NO!  I searched the forum for the obvious words like "color" "album" "playlist", etc., but nothing turned up.  What the hell are they talking about on those forums in all those threads?  I have no idea.

Anyway, I know somebody here must use foobar, so I'll probably need some coaching.

I think foobar is one of those software where, because it's aimed at powerusers, they have intentionally made the software as hard to figure out as possible.  OK, it's a poweruser program, but it's also a freakin media player, not some complex, flight-simluation software for corn's sake.

OK, you guys have successfully intrigued me about KMPlayer.  However, how do you install the thing?!  If it's such a great player, shouldn't it have some install file somewhere?  I'm sure I can figure it out eventually, but I don't have the time right now.

It's astounding this media player is not better known.
It's not that surprising.  If you don't make a program easy to install, how popular do you think it's going to be?  Don't you think the average user just wants to double-click an install file, and then run the program?

What's the Best? / Re: Newsreader programs
« Last post by superboyac on September 15, 2006, 02:27 AM »
Xnews is pretty nice!  It definitely does have good post reading capabilities.  Can't say that I like the whole Windows 3.1 modular approach to the interface.  Reminds me of Pegasus email (which I used for years until switching to The Bat this year, thanks to DC).

I like the slew of options in XNews, looks extremely customizable.  And I like the statistical feedback you get from the program.  The interface though is a little downer.  Man, everything about this program reminds me of Pegasus email...it's free, it's really good for a free program, lots of options, quirky interface.  Deja vu!

Thanks Z, I just tried out Newsleecher, and it is pretty cool.  I don't think I can commit to it because it has no ability for reading posts (unless I'm missing something).  But it seems great for binaries.  I will try Xnews next (is it me, or does Xnews look exactly like Agent?!).

KenR, thanks for the info on Agent.  You know what I realized?  I hadn't purged for probably over a year!  As soon as I did, my Agent was lighting fast.

I also want to try Newsbin Pro in more depth now.  There seems to be something drawing me to it's klunky interface.

I get it now!  Thanks allen for that explanation, I just couldn't understand what it meant.  It's crystal clear.  I just tried using it, but I don't think it's for me.  One thing I can't deal with is I can't delete blocks of text at a time.  I have to delete one character at a time, or use the "cut" command.  Is there no other way?

From the help:
If you use Persistent blocks text remains selected until you select another, hide the selection or delete the selected text. Otherwise, the selection will be automatically hidden when you move the cursor to another position, type some text, or insert some text from the Clipboard

I don't understand this.

What's the Best? / Newsreader programs
« Last post by superboyac on September 13, 2006, 11:13 AM »
I know this topic has been discussed in the following threads, but it should have an entry in this subforum.  Here are the existing threads:
https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=3355.0
https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=1106.0

I've used Forte Agent for years, just because it was the standard years ago.  But now I know there are some viable alternatives.  I'm specifically interested in some good opinions about Newsbin, Newsleecher, and maybe Newsman.  But please chime in about any other programs as well.

I use newsreader for reading posts and downloading binaries, so I don't fall into the one-or-the-other category.  Forte's always been pretty good at both.  The only thing that has consistently bothered me about Agent is how whenever I close the program, it goes through this process of compacting databases or some other thing with a progress bar.  Anyway, in recent versions, it takes forever to close the program sometimes, like a minute or two.  Other programs I've tried like Newsbin doesn't do that.  Maybe it's a necessary function, I don't know.

I've tried Newsbin recently.  It has a kind of ghetto interface, but I think I like it overall.  Lots of customizability and feedback.

I've heard Newsleecher is good also.  I took a short look at it, and it seems nice.  It has a search feature that people make a big deal about, but I don't know if I'm that kind of user.  I don't do usenet as if it's a peer-to-peer program, so maybe newsleecher is not for me.

I was thinking about switching from Agent to Newsbin.  Any thoughts from experienced users of either?

What's the Best? / Re: Anti-Virus Package
« Last post by superboyac on September 13, 2006, 10:59 AM »
I think this category (antivirus programs) will be a very difficult one to review, partly because it's difficult (and risky) to have more than one program installed on a machine at a time.  And the installing/uninstalling of the programs is not always the simplest process.  So whoever is (will) review these will need some help from those of us using the different programs, like this thread is doing already.

I'll give my input on the ones I've tried.  Years ago, I used to use Norton (before I was picky).  But when the bloat bothered me, I looked for another one.  So after Norton, I tried a few products like Kaspersky, F-Secure, F-Prot, Panda, Avast, McAfee...I think that's it.

Norton sucks, as most of us know.  They have a Corporate edition that my old company used to use, which actually wasn't bad.  But it's not for consumers like us.

Kaspersky is good, it's what I use now.  It can be a little resource heavy compared to others, but not enough to annoy me yet.  Before I knew about it, what intrigued me about it was that it was universally agreed that it had the best detection method.  The current version cleaned up the interface and made it more user-friendly (and a little lighter on resources if I'm not mistaken).  The interface is still a little complex for the uninitiated user, but I have no problem with it.  I mean, you can't have tons of features and still keep the interface super-simple.  Another thing I like about Kaspersky is the feedback you get of what it's doing.  There's a live log window and statistics for every little thing, and I love that.

F-Secure was my alternative to Kaspersky in case it ever got too resource hungry.  Scot Finnie picked F-Secure as his AV of choice, discussed in this DC thread:
https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=4652.0
F-secure is nice.  It's more user friendly than Kaspersky, and for all practical purposes, just as effective in detections.  The reason I like Kaspersky better is because F-Secure doesn't offer as much feedback and statistics.  It kind of just does the job (well, I might add) but only notifies you if bad things happen.  In Kaspersky, you can see a log of every file it scans, the result of the scan, and other information.  I like that, because I'm very nosy.  F-Secure also installs something like 12 processes, which freaks some people out, but I never noticed it affecting my machine's performance.

F-Prot is a program I tried once because it sounded like F-Secure.  It turned out to be decent.  The interface was a little weird because each thing was it's own window; it was kind of modular.  I think NOD32 is modular also, but I've never tried it.  F-Prot seemed like a nice, simple, effective program.  Not much feedback, not too many options, but it did the job.  I think I recommended it to my sister who doesn't spend too much time with the computer, I don't know if it's still being used.  Anyway, it was too simple for me, and if I remember correctly, it had annoying notifications when something was detected that couldn't be customized.

Panda...I tried this out just a little bit.  It was too bubbly for me.  Looked like an AV program for kindergarten kids.  But it's pretty good from what I understand.

Avast...I tried Avast out for a short time.  I was looking for a good free program at the time.  It was decent.  It had good customizability, and it functioned well.  Nothing too special as far as I was concerned.  You can skin it.  Why anyone would want to skin an antivirus program is beyond me, but you can.  It's like skinning a defrag program...what's the point?

McAfee...CRAP!  I hate McAfee.  My mom bought a laptop recently that came with it and it was pure crap.  It has a crazy interface that's bubbly and looks simple, but it's pretty non-functional.  And you have to register online (with a password and login) to use to program.  I think it was for downloading updates and new definitions?  Anyway, it was junk.  There was no way to turn it off, and there was always some notification for something popping up.  And uninstalling was very very difficult.  I hate that program and won't ever give it the time of day ever again.  I was going off about it to my supervisor a week ago when I found out he used it at home.  Apparently, he didn't have to register for anything, so maybe I just had a bad experience.  But I remember clearly how much I disliked that program.  And this was fairly recently, like a couple of months ago (McAfee Internet Security 2006 or something).  Oh man!  I just remembered that my computer here at work uses McAfee Viruscan Enterprise.  But that one's not so bad.  I still hate them.

So those are my mini-reviews.  I don't agree with Scot Finnie's assesment of Kaspersky, I've never had those problems with it, but maybe he uses his computer in more complex ways than I do.  (Here's a link to our DC discussion of that:)
https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=4652.0
By the way, I don't concern myself about the details of the detection engines of the different programs.  Honestly, I feel that any of the major AV programs will provide good enough protection for me.  For me, it's more of an issue of UI, customizability, resource use, feedback, etc.  I never get caught up in the debates of how certain tests are performed and analyzed, etc.  I know a lot of people here love NOD32, and I trust their opinion.  I've never tried it, but if I ever had problems, it would be first on my list to go to.  From what I've experienced and heard, my recommendations for AV programs (for powerusers) are:
Kaspersky, F-Secure, NOD32

First spamassassin tries to eliminate spam

Then my filters kick in, putting emails for/from mailing lists into their own folders, one per mailing list. These filters filter by recepient and sender, one filters by topic.

The rest stays in the top folder until I read and sort it. If I find I have to do this more than twice a week I try to write a filter.

I use Sylpheed-Clasws as email program
