Living Room / Re: Hack a Day website is now on Kickstarter
« Last post by wraith808 on July 15, 2013, 02:15 PM »
Crowdfunding in my opinion should be for a tangible goal that is of benefit and interest to all involved.  There is a reason that this is on IndieGoGo instead of kickstarter.  (It is not a kickstarter other than the generic term that seems to be synonymous with crowdfunding these days).

Everything on Kickstarter must be a project.

A project is something with a clear end, like making an album, a film, or a new game. A project will eventually be completed, and something will be produced as a result.

This isn't a project, and nothing definitive that is not already in production will be produced.  It fails on this count.

Kickstarter cannot be used to raise money for causes, whether it's the Red Cross or a scholarship, or for "fund my life" projects, like tuition or bills.

This is closer to a cause than not, in my estimation.

Kickstarter cannot be used to sell equity or solicit loans.

This is basically what this is doing if it doesn't make the full 500k to purchase outright.

Kickstarter cannot be used to fund e-commerce, business, and social networking websites or apps.

Fails on this one too from the campaign page.

(all taken from http://www.kickstart....com/help/guidelines)

Now, taking that off the table and looking at what it is:

- the end goals (other than to purchase a website that is for-profit) is not defined.
- the campaign and the representation of those involved is a bit sketchy.
- the perks are not anything of note ("Due to the nature of this campaign, the cost of the perk tier must exceed the cost of the perk item or it is actually a drain on the campaign. Because of this, perks that we can provide are limited.") and so this is purely a donation.
- Did I mention that the whole thing is pretty half-baked?

Kickstarter is a tool to bring the market together with ideas that would otherwise not get funded or would be prohibitively controlled in that funding.  It is not a magic bullet, it is not a get-rich-scheme.  Prospectus' should be more planned out than normal in my opinion, and people should be more discerning than they would be if giving larger amounts of money to an investment opportunity, because there is more opportunity for fraud and failure, not less... and less opportunity to reclaim said funds.

The name of the employee at the NTSB that confirmed these names, has now been identified as: Wi Fuk Dup.

That's just an excuse IMO.  You should pretty immediately know before you make that slide that these are not Korean names.

The anchorwoman got punked.  But the person that made the story... not so much.  Not even if the NTSB intern messed up.

This would only work as a temporary measure, if I'm not mistaken. Isn't the priority reset each time the task manager is closed? The problem isn't so much the slowness once it's loaded, but the (long) time it takes for it to just appear.

Just now, it took 25s to show its face. Feels like I'm booting an OS or something.

Mine maintains it from boot to boot.  When I just checked, it was on high, and I haven't touched it in forever.

http://www.wikihow.c...Windows-Task-Manager

I see that some say that doesn't do it permanently; not sure what governs that as mine seem to stay.

trap?  accounts closing down?

...O...k...

 :o

I was just speaking against calling someone a fascist for modding a board.  Sort of lessens the use of the word and is a pejorative that's really not needed.

Mine takes a while when the processor is under load.   I haven't tried yet b/c I don't really use it that much (I use process explorer), but have you tried to increase the priority of task manager?

By using e.g. "start /high" ?  Or by using the Prio utilitty (just found it by googling) ?

You can just open the task manager and look for taskmgr.exe and right click on it and set it to high.

While the transmission did hold together, the engine slammed against the firewall as the car rather violently spun around to change vehicle attitude to match the drivelines new directional intent. We spent the better part of an hour verifying our findings, before the sound of sirens in the distance caused prudence to end the proceedings.

...This is quite likely one of the fondest memories I have.

Ok... I have to ask.  Was the car still driveable?  I take it that it was since you used it in your getaway?  ;)

There are many such potentially incredibly helpful threads there that then are (often very quickly) closed by some blockwart - from its potential, it could be the best site there is, but this invariable closing down of questions there is almost unbearable. Next step would be to even delete the answers there are when they close down the thread.

Here, the closing down is particularly "amusing" since"Rodolfo", to justify this hangman behavior, specifically ask for a "another" question that in this particular instance HAS been asked, so total idiocy here is coupled with their recurrent ordinary fascism. Excuse my very open words, but that could be the finest site in the web for programmers, but it is constantly crippled by admins that are the worst a**ho*** in the web - and no, I never published a question or an answer there or tried to do so, but it's just too revolting, just by reading there.

One of the reason it (and other StackExchange sites) is so valued is because it sticks to a particular vision and is excellent withing that vision.  So calling someone 'fascist' for moderating that vision seems a bit... extreme.  Especially when the difference between the people that are voting and you is only time spent building the site by being active adding content (questions and answers).

And I say this as someone who would have voted to close such a question had I the reputation on that SE.

Well, sooner or later, unless they start reversing course like they did for the XBone, they're going to start seeing more and more of this as others take advantage of their arrogance...

5863
How much programming do you want to do?  I know I've used AutoHotKey for this purpose.  There are a couple of others that I've used (along with AA) for work, but have found that making my own is more productive (C++/C# working better than either of the others to management's chagrin)

But others that I have tried...

Deskover

iMacros

Automise

Macro Express Pro

Though none of them did what we needed, what was found in the end was that the more you paid, the closer we got- you get what you pay for, really.  That is, unless you're willing to really write what you need.

The order above is no coincidence- they are ordered in descending price and use order above.

Not sure why you're looking at alternatives to AA (if something other than price), but that seems to be an absolute, and AA is at the top of the heap in terms of fully commercial products.

There's also extraction services, where you point them to the data feed that you want to extract data from and they build a custom solution that extracts and then mails the results to you (or you retrieve it from their interface), but those are pretty expensive also.
5864
I say that the one thing to remember is something 40 says- if you're not paying (or not paying a reasonable amount) then you're not the customer, you're the product.  And you're way too likely to see that digital lifeboat message about it's ending happen sooner or later.  Not a good feeling for something you're backing up with.

I tried a whole lot of them, and posted a few mini-reviews.  I'm currently using a combination Amazon s3 with Syncovery (for things that I just want to back up) and Cubby (for things that I want to access regularly and/or sync).  I think that both of those are reasonable (for me, and for the company in terms of money spent) and backed by solid companies (Amazon and Logmein)

On a side note, I stopped using Jungle Disk because I realized that I was paying about a 33% premium on s3 services billed through them.

I admit it, I laughed.  Well, I guess I don't have to admit it... the NSA already knows.

And I did laugh, and nothing wrong with it... until I realized that was my kid...

^Microsoft's main goal is to eventually go over to a walled garden app store model for software installations. So once they start demanding (and getting) 30% of every single dollar spent for every single program that gets installed on Windows, it will all become largely moot.

Any breaks in dev tool pricing you see are mainly to get more "for Windows 8" titles out there ASAP. Especially since neither the consumers or dev shops have exhibited too much interest in this largely needless upgrade. It's starting to look a little embarrassing for Microsoft that so few people seem interested in attending their latest shindig.
 8)

Just saw an article in the latest MSDN magazine that alluded to that.

http://msdn.microsof...gazine/dn296517.aspx

In case that's a wall for MSDN subscribers, I'll quote the relevant part below:

Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 are on a path toward convergence. In the meantime, developers interested in building for both platforms must understand the major similarities and differences between the two. Learning where the Windows 8 and Windows Phone Runtime APIs currently intersect gives you the best opportunity to deliver applications for both, leveraging much of the same knowledge, tools, code and assets. In this article I’ll explore these differences and commonalties to help you understand what is and is not possible before you start building a solution that targets both platforms.

The consistency in the UX—the use of tiles, the rich touch interface, the app bar and navigation—simplifies application design and implementation for both platforms. And the adoption of a common API surface area facilitates code sharing for a lot of scenarios. You can choose the right technologies for your apps: C#, Visual Basic or C++, or a hybrid for both platforms. The resources found at aka.ms/sharecode contain great info about creating applications that run on Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8, and present code-sharing techniques to maximize code reuse when building for both.

Emphasis mine.  I don't think that was just idle talk, but points towards what 40 is saying.  And unfortunately, I'm willing to eat crow on this.  If there *is* convergence, unless something changes, the only way to install is going to be through the walled garden.  Even Apple hasn't done that on the Mac, though I see more and more developers choosing to distribute solely through the App Store rather than provide the DMGs for install...

It would be nice to hear about online activities people use to interact with long distance friends or partners.  Anyone know of any good activities?

I know you like boardgames and such... there are several online boardgame sites and google hangout supports more than a few different games.  Have your game night, no matter what the distance!

I think I'd rather have a higher powered desktop-cpu class machine that I could maybe also use as a NAS..

Hmmm.. saying that, you've really zeroed in on something I added to my living room setup.  It's not as flexible as a HTPC, but for media type uses it's aces.

http://www.wdc.com/e...products.aspx?id=570

I got it for about $120 from Best Buy on sale with 1TB.  It's great, and I haven't had to do anything with it.  I have the 1TB onboard, but I also connect to my network to get stuff off my NAS that I don't access enough to keep on the internal drive.  And it is dead simple.

Not as flexible again, but it's basically a settop device, for all the good and bad that means.

I guess I'm missing something.  I see no reference to 1080p in mouser's requirements.  I do realize BluRay is 1080p, and I acknowledge that the Pi isn't going to handle that.  But that looks like a "nice to have" feature, not a "must have" (based on mouser's initial post).

Since it's a one time payment, it might not be a huge deal to pay out an extra $250 for a machine that can handle BluRay, but if you can settle for plain ole DVD...hard to beat the price of a Pi.

As I said, it was in the interest of disclosure.  If he doesn't have the need for it, and doesn't really care about the streaming, then he might choose to do without that, or suffer a bit.  But knowledge is power, and that's what this thread is about- giving mouser the benefit of our collective knowledge, not making a decision for him.

As 40 would say... onward!
5870
I haven't tried it with 1080, but I haven't heard of others complaining.  Not saying it's not an issue...just that I've never heard that as a complaint before.  And as for mouser's requirements, it looks like THE dominant use of the device will be as a simple music player.  1080p is not an issue.

Without that, the only thing that I see as a possible issue is the YouTube piece.  I would expect there's an add on though.  (And for me, at least, while I occasionally found myself streaming YouTube under my old media center setup, I'd say YouTube streaming was about 1% of my use.)

Raspberry Pi will play 1080p only if its encoded h.264.  Otherwise it stutters.  This is usually b/c of the sound.  However, if you have already encoded your collection, this is a big deal, and transcoding isn't really an option because of problems with streaming.

Though this is not the primary use, he did state it as an important requirement, which is the reason that I brought it up.  Not to disparage the Pi or any solution, but to solve his use case.

Apple Loses: Judge Finds Price-Fixing in E-Book Case

And on anti-trust grounds!  Grab the popcorn, this is going to get interesting!
5872
If you're not dealing with a TV tuner, why not just use XBMC or OpenELEC on a Raspberry Pi?

I would like to be able to watch youtube/live streaming.

Those two don't go well together.  The processor just doesn't handle it well.  It also doesn't handle 1080P well.  The UI will also be less responsive.

The Pi is good for what it does.  But his requirements sort of kick it out the door.

Truthfully, I don't mind ads- done a certain way.  I think that's what 40 means by trust.  If they vet, if they don't let abusive or obnoxious ads through, I'll be fine with it.
