There are plenty of CD 'virtual' devices (eg. Nero's ImageDrive) where you can copy a CD to your hard disc (or network drive) and then mount the image so that it appears like a standard CD-ROM. I have used this effectively with programs that need the CD present - just make sure you install the software from the virtual CD so that it can easily find it in future.

There are a lot listed here http://www.google.co...amp;q=Virtual+CD-ROM some of which are free (though I haven't tried them).

Find And Run Robot / Re: not freeware !!!
« Last post by Carol Haynes on June 05, 2006, 04:45 AM »
A donation is not forced to use completely unrestricted software from the site. All that is requested is that you consider giving a donation if you find the program useful. If you don't want to make a donation you can use it for free.

The only thing you need to do to get a free license code is to visit the site 3 times (at 6 monthly intervals over a year) and sign up to the forum. The object of this is to encourage people to become involved in a growing and active community (without being too intrusive) and not just download a copy from a third party website and never visit the homepage. There is nothing sinister about it (look around an see what other members think). The other thing to consider is the programs are updated with alarming regularity and there is great support available in the forums so it is definitely worth keeping in touch with the site.

There has been a lot of discussion on the forum on what constitutes freeware and donationware do feel free to join in with those threads and air your views.

The way I see it (personal view) is that if you can download and use software completely for free then it is freeware, if a donation would be appreciated then it is donationware. Since all the software available on the site fits into both descriptions then both terms can be legitimately applied. To me freeware does not mean that there is no license agreement (in fact you have to agree to a license agreement as part of almost all freeware - even if you don't bother to read it) - donationcoder.com just asks that as part of the license agreement that you download a free key - and even if you don't the app still works without restriction.

If you don't want to register with the site that is fine too and you can download a license key for free every couple of months without any registration. Go here: https://www.donation...om/Keys/nosignup.php if that is what you want to do.

Over the years I have had problems with suspend on desktop computers too ... I have even had the situation that I install Windows twice (clean installs into two partitions) and it works for one and not the other (BSODS!)

Looks nice but it does the icon bit but doesn't seem to do anything about backing up file associations (which is really the more important part).

I do have NetSnippets and Surfulator (don't really know why I bought both as they do similar jobs).
-Carol Haynes (June 02, 2006, 09:44 AM)
Which begs the question, which do you prefer?

I'm still not sure - I like both. Net Snippets Pro feels like a more user friendly interface but Surfulater has a lot of stuff that I have barely scratched.

Both have demo versions (Snippets has a free version too IIRC) so best thing is to try them and see which works best for you.

I've had a look in frontpage and can't see any options in there ... bummer
5857
Total Uninstall should be able to do this also.
5858
In Word go to Tools > Options and hit the Edit Tab. Half way down there is a Cut and Paste section with a setting button - you can turn of smart behaviour. This may or may not be what you want. I have a feeling it is to do with automatic style adjustment.

I am using Office XP - I haven't check but I'd guess there are similar options in other apps.

There is also a link on the main edit tab related to selecting whole words including spaces.

When you shutdown normally how long does it take at the "Save User Settings" screen? If it takes a long time it may be that your user hive is not being saved at shutdown - which would account for the loss of user settings?

If so try creating a new user id and login there - if that solves the problem you know it was a user profile corruption problem (not uncommon)
5860
Excuse me for asking but how do you use shellMenuView to remove items from the "new ..." list (which is what you asked for)? I can't see any of them actually listed?
5861
Have a look at the WindowsXP Power Tools in downloads section at Microsoft.com There is a resize tool there which adds a right click to the explorer menu which lets you resize one or more images - you can select whether to replace the original or output them to another file/folder.
5862
Not sure about that - the website associated with the download doesn't even mention it at all (!!!) in fact it doesn't seem to be related. Plus the download doen't appear to have been touched for 2 years ??

There also seems no way to buy it as the links for online help, support and purchasing no longer exist.

All the VS 2005 Express stuff can be downloaded fom the MS website for free. They are in standard CD ISO format so that you can burn CDs easily and install from standard installation discs.

Living Room / Re: Is firewire better than USB?

Actually I was wrong Firewire 2 did appear - here is a Windows box example:

800Mb/s - not bad eh?

Actually Doug Knox's list of fixes is an excellent resoure but the REG files also illustrate how non-trivial it is.

I'm not sure if HKCR is sufficient for a backup because I think any user customisation will be saved in HKCU so if you want to backup your customisations you probably need to back up HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes at least (and probably more).

The other thing is to be aware that any installs and uninstalls will affect HKCR so that if you restore an out of date copy you may screw things up on your system royally!

Living Room / Re: Is firewire better than USB?

Both are good - but Firewire was really developed for Macs (as iLink) and USB for Windows. Gradually Firewire was adopted on Windows because it was so much better than USB 1 ... USB 2 was really a respose to the growth of Firewire and they went for a higher data rate to say 'look Windows is beter' unfortunately the architecture of USB isn't nearly as good as Firewire so in practice Firewire is quicker.

There was talk a while back about Firewire2 coming out to push data rates again - but I get the impression it has died a death.

Personally the only thing I have used Firewire for is DV (Camcorder Video tape) dubbing to hard disc adn via my DVD recorder to DVD and I have never had any problems with it. I used to have loads of probs with USB 1 being flaky - but it seems to have become a bit more stable since USB2 came out - maybe the drivers have stabilised a bit.

I'll bet the cover versions are Visual Studio Express - not standard.

In the UK VS 2005 Standard is currently selling for £265 !!

By the way there was an earlier thread on this at https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=2729.0

The webcasts are only available until the end of June (then they will be taken off line) so if you want to take advantage you'd better sign up quickly.

Looks interesting - and its Open Source (which isn't immediate from the website until you get into the FAQs)

Each app registers (or should) that it can handle a file - so that eg. even though I have PhotoShop set to open JPEG when I look through the registry AcdSee has JPEG links along with MS PhotoEditor (installed with Office), windows Preview, Microsoft RAW etc.

It would be really useful if we had an app that could parse the registry to discover which apps are capable of opening each filetype and allowing you to switch easily - and also perhaps have a default assignment so that the app could automatically reset all default associations etc.
5871
Looks quite complicated in the registry if you try and trace how filetypes are assigned.

General Software Discussion / Re: Photo panorama creation
« Last post by Carol Haynes on June 03, 2006, 01:34 PM »
Had a look at RealViz Stitcher Express ...

I am using the demo version which I downloaded. By far the biggest package (100Mb).

To be fair to the other software I have not read any instructions (because I didn't for them) and tried to build the same panorama again.

First off I can see no way to get it to automatically put the photos together. Each one has to be placed in approximately the right place and then stitched to the existing panorama before adding the next.

The only trouble is I can't save the project I am working on (presumably a demo restriction) and having spent the best part of 40 minutes trying to do this I get an error every time I try to render the output "Stitcher has run out of memory" - the program then exits without any option to save what you have done.

I have tried doing only a third of the pano (4 pictures) and it does the same.

Given that I have a machine with 1Gb of memory (and well over half of that is not in use) I am not really too impressed with this!

I'll investigate a bit further before I unistall it but so far this looks the least promising (and one of the most expensive) options.

I have also contacted AutoPano (and got an almost instant reply) so I will definitely add that to the review and I have also contacted Serif Panorama Plus (since there is no demo download available).

Anyone got any other programs they would like checking out?

Good idea - I'd like this too

Living Room / Amazing stories ...
« Last post by Carol Haynes on June 03, 2006, 05:22 AM »
How about some amazing stories to while away the day ...

Here is one to get you going ...

An industrial shredder ate my hamster

For a breed of animal that is quite easily scared to death, Mike the hamster has got some nerve.

Having been put through a huge industrial shredder, rotating drum and vibrating grids, it emerged the other side recycled, a little quivering but otherwise unscathed.

The rodent's death-defying journey began when a skip in which it was rummaging around was loaded on to the back of a transporter and driven to a recycling plant.

What's the Best? / Re: Anti-Virus Package
« Last post by Carol Haynes on June 03, 2006, 05:14 AM »
I'm not sure where EZ Antivirus came from (and I have never tried it) but CA bought up PestPatrol and ruined it as far as I am concerned and so I would use their products again. PestPatrol was a great app before that but basically they stripped out all of the options and removed almost all user control over what is going on.

Just my personal bias I suppose.
