Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Pasting From Stack - Questions
« Last post by mouser on July 13, 2015, 08:34 AM »
This isn't a feature I use (at least not often), so my memory of it is fuzzy...

But I think the stack behavior in CHS works by letting you set the stack position, and then always moving from there towards more recent clips, walking through the entire clip database.

So what's missing is the ability to select/highlight a subset of clips -- you can only set the stack position, and the ability to work in a LIFO mode.

Having said that, I could extend the stack functionality to support the kind of functionality you are wanting..

I actually considered it, but it seems secure not attached to the cabinet. it does look like its attached behind it though.

spring loaded speaker cover =
a $1.50 magnetic spring latch that you can get at any hardware store.
a square frame built from 1/4 inch square dowels wrapped in speaker fabric.

as for the tv -- i used a wall mount even though it places the tv almost exactly same place a tv stand would put it, just so it would leave the top of the cabinet uncluttered.  i had to employ a trick i use when wall mounting heavy objects on my plaster walls that don't have studs, which is to mount a wood plank to the wall and then attach the tv mount to it.

Does anyone know what the relation is, if any, between Easeus and Eassos? The names and products seem so similar...

Thank you so much, Jim!
To be honest, comments like that -- to hear them and even better when people post them on trusted sites we all love -- mean so much to us -- more than any monetary donation could.

One correction: DC is not an "official" non-profit.  Non-profit is a very specific legal term of art that can refer to organizations that make huge amounts of money and page huge salaries, but keep the money in house.  It would be more accurate to say that DC is a never-made-a-profit-not-trying-very-hard.  :D

If software blogs only wrote about software when it was new we would all be using buggy new crap instead of the stuff that has proven its worth over time.  :-\

ok i gotcha now.
yeah let me look into how hard it would be to get the stack feature to be more flexible about what it considered the stack.. it's a bit tricky..

Can you clarify a little bit what you mean when you are talking about pasting a sequence.. I'm not sure I follow what you are doing.. do you mean you are using the "stack" feature?

Have you tried the "merge" feature? It might be easier for you to select all the clips at once and merge them before pasting?

« Last post by mouser on July 11, 2015, 10:54 AM »
Before I answer your questions more specifically, let me address the root of the weirdness.

The "Quick Paste" menu/group is actually a "virtual" group, defined by some sql filtering on the clip database.
If you right click that group, and say edit, you will see something like this:
Screenshot - 7_11_2015 , 10_50_27 AM.png

You can see how the SQL defines what appears in that group (and thus in the quick paste menu).

So by altering that SQL (and the custom menu sorting SQL below) you can actually tweak what is displayed in that menu and the order.  Some people alter it to change the default behavior of only showing clips from the last day, etc.

You can also always reorder clips by changing their value in the the "Ordering" column, which will take precedence over the normal date ordering (which will be used secondarily).

It's because this is a virtual group that clips can appear in this group as well as the NEW group, and why deleting from one will delete from the other -- there is only one copy of the clip, and it lives in one real group -- but can also be shown in multiple virtual groups.

Although the concept is a bit odd, it does allow CHS to do some nice things, like have a virtual group that shows all clips that are urls, or all clips that contain a certain keyword, or all clips that came from a certain application, etc.

The Favorites group is another virtual group -- it shows all clips which have their "Favorite?" checkbox checked.  Note though that you can also manually move a clip to be located in a virtual folder as its home folder -- which will show it there even if it doesn't match the sql.  In other words, if you manually drop a clip in the Favorites group, it will show there (and only there), even if it doesn't have its "Favorite?" checkbox checked.

Glad to hear you are liking it!!

That sounds like a bug, let me try to investigate what might be happening..

Having said that, I have a much easier workflow for you if you are doing this often:

Go to the Modify Format dialog as you are doing, and SAVE your settings as a preset, and give it a nice name, like "Remove Blanks".
Ok now copy your clip to the clipboard, and go to where you want to paste it, and hit Ctrl+Alt+Q to bring up quick paste menu,
then hit T for "Formatting Presets" submenu, and choose your saved preset "Remove Blanks", and it should do the action and then paste it in your target app.

Notes:
1. This won't change the clip in CHS
2. This can also be used to change text in place -- so you can go to your text editor, select some text, and then do Ctrl+Alt+Q and select the transformation and it will first copy the clip, then transform it, then paste it over original.  This is the fastest way to change text in place.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Paste Directly from CHS Main Window
« Last post by mouser on July 11, 2015, 10:33 AM »
If you click the button with orange clipboard and green arrow leaving it, it will copy the currently selected clip to the last active window:
Screenshot - 7_11_2015 , 10_31_39 AM_ver001.png

In addition, I thought there was an option to make double-clicking a clip in the grid copy it to the last active window but I can't find it.  If I was wrong about that I can add an option for it.
You can right-click on a clip in the grid and select the last item which is to copy it to last active window.

If we have any skilled web dev people here, there is one job that could be "volunteer-outsourced" right now -- creating a custom smf2 theme to approximate the current donationcoder forum look..
It could be done totally independently from what I'm working on -- you would just install the current version of smf2 on a local machine and then make a new theme based off the default on, but trying to capture the basic feel of the current donationcoder theme.
Any takers?

If there is something I can test, help, etc let me know

A major additional motivation for finally moving the website to a proper cms, is to be able to have additional moderators and content creators who can help maintain pages and add new content.  So I am hoping that when it's all set up we can finally revisit the idea of having some regular DC folks add more new content to the website on a regular basis.  This might take the forum of having a bunch of dc regulars writing weekly columns like we tried in the early days of DC, etc.

Also: Converting the hundreds of static html pages into CMS pages is going to be a huge amount of work.  After I get the basic infrastructure and process set up, I would love to have volunteers help in the process.  It won't be particularly difficult work, mostly a matter of copy and paste then fixing links and formatting.

Some additional details on the upgrades:

Those who know me know that I tend to spend inordinate amounts of time weighing options before i pull the trigger on large projects.  This vacillation and hesitation can be extremely unproductive.  Part of what has hung up the modernization of DC has been a struggle to decide what direction to go in.

In the end I/we decided that what was best for the community that hangs out here, at least at this point, is to move to the Drupal CMS, and upgrade from our highly customized SMF 1.x to the latest version of the SMF 2.0 forum (and minimizing any customization that makes maintenance/upgrading too difficult).

There was quite a bit of discussion regarding moving to a more modern and actively developed forum system -- but in the end several things seemed to weigh against that: First, this forum community seems to be comfortable with a more traditional system; secondly, if we did eventually want to move to a more modern forum like Discourse, it would still be helpful for us to first go from a highly-customized version of smf1 to a more stock smf2 before doing that.

And as for using Drupal as the CMS.. I have a long love/hate relationship with Drupal.  I had really hoped to move DC to a completely customized new kind of cms system that I have been working on part time (Mewlo), but waiting for Mewlo to reach a usable stage is not practical.  Drupal represents a conservative stable choice.

Official Announcements / DonationCoder Major Upgrades - Progress Report Thread
« Last post by mouser on July 10, 2015, 12:00 PM »
Ok I'm going to use this thread to document progress on some major DonationCoder upgrades that are long overdue.
If you're not interested in reading insider useless progress report notes for the next month, please ignore this thread, otherwise read on.

Inspired by the success of the last fundraiser, I've decided that the time has finally come to bite the bullet and spend a couple of months modernizing the donationcoder website and forum.

At first I wrote a giant manifesto on a revolutionary new approach to DonationCoder, including a long harsh critique of the current system, and showed it to the DonationCoder moderators.  Everyone who read it told me it was a depressing read and a grossly impractical proposal. So that idea was dumped.

SO.. Instead, we are going to simply focus for now on sustainability, by finally moving DonationCoder to a proper cms and upgrading our forum system from an older and *highly* customized/kludged version of smf1.x which has become hard to keep updated.

This first stage of upgrades involve a large amount of behind the scenes work, will take many weeks, and will result in little or no outward improvements -- in fact it's virtually guaranteed that things will get occasionally worse and buggy during the process until the kinks are all worked out.  Some of our non-critical features may be removed from the forum during the process -- probably just temporarily.

So the current goal is not to bring new features or fancy looks to the site -- but rather to clean up cruft and make the site much easier to maintain, moderate, and update.  After we achieve that we can talk about adding stuff.

IMPORTANT:
No changes are being made on the CURRENT LIVE site -- so you're not going to see any changes here for a while!
Instead I will be creating a mirror site and working on that.  When the time comes to move everything -- we will simply shut down the current forum and move all forum messages and then turn on the new one.
No forum posts, attachments, or user accounts will be lost.

On the other hand, there have been plenty of times that the easiest way to recover from a software installation gone awry, a possible virus, or just a bad Windows update, has been to restore the last good image of the system partition.

this.

Three more books, each under a different pseudonym.
how fascinating!!! can you tell us more about the books and why use a different pseudonym for each? I would have thought it would be beneficial to establish a name..

I just want to echo what others have said -- it's very hard to choose a partition size that you don't later feel the need to change :)

I have for a long time advocated having separate DRIVES for windows vs data, and would prefer that, with a single partition on each drive.

Absent that, if I did have to use a single drive, and it was a big drive (terrabyte or so), I would split it into 2 partitions, to make things cleaner.  I would probably split it in half and use the first partition for the operating system AND a giant temp/working directory, with the second partition for my data.

I just uploaded a new beta yesterday to fix a slowdown hang, can you try it:

And let me know if it solves your issue?

Well what Shades said is related to what's causing the FARR delay; although FARR is multithreaded in some respects, it will hang while waiting trying to resolve network paths -- I need to make improve the multithreading to avoid that.
