Screenshot Captor / Re: Benefits of using SC with ShareX?
« Last post by mouser on July 20, 2015, 02:07 PM »
First, welcome to the site

ShareX is a nice tool but I'm the author of Screenshot Captor, and so I'm best suited to talk about it.

Originally Screenshot Captor did not include support for uploading images to an image sharing site -- that's why I added integration with ShareX.

Since that time, Screenshot Captor now has a nice built-in uploader for an Imager Sharing site (ImageShack) which works right out of the box and requires no signup, etc.

So at this time, the ShareX integration in SC is not really needed, and is probably overkill.  ShareX is still a nice tool and some people may prefer it, but integrating the two is probably not very useful at this point.

If you have any questions bout how to do something in Screenshot Captor, just ask!

By the way, that picture of Fred I was taken in a 1997 Toyota RAV4 which I bought especially for him because of the room behind the back seats. I still drive that 18 year old car and all the Freds have ridden back there.

that's wonderful.

Happy trails and rest in peace Fred II.
They both look very sweet.

I'm having second thoughts about Drupal again too, but I've decided to punt on that for now.

I've got my eye on 2.1 and hopefully the upgrade from 2.0 to 2.1 will be relatively painless when it is suitable for production use.  I agree with your concerns about smf but judge it to be the best way forward for us.

You seem to be following these trends pretty seriously -- perhaps i can chew your ear over email occasionally about the issues? ([email protected])

I'm coding a few slick new features.. How about a (sortable) page where you can see all the topics started by (or alternatively, participated in by) a given member? I'm having fun!
The icing on the cake is that you can also filter by whether the topic is locked and/or sticky, and by # of replies (useful for seeing unreplied or ultra-popular topics, etc.)

Post New Requests Here / Re: Need a script to auto detect display

glasskuter, after you donate you will receive an email with a license key (for our other big software), and a link to visit that will upgrade your forum account and put the money in your account where you can give it out.  so just visit that link and then you'll be able to give out your donation.

Let me just say how great it is to see threads like this, where someone has a request and someone else solves it.   The icing on the cake is when the original person who made the request is willing to go through the steps to give a donation to the coder -- it means a lot.  :-*

In cases like this, it's important not just that people donate, but that they go through with the extra step as you are, and send their donation to the person who helped them.  If anyone ever gets lost and needs help directing their donation to someone on the site, and can't figure out how to do it, please don't hesitate to contact us ([email protected]) and I will assist.

That sounds like a great feature idea to add to my Process Piglet tool

I'll add it asap.

Another full day of work, from wake to sleep, working on the upgrade.  I'm in the groove :)
Everything is progressing steadily, and I can't imagine anything getting in the way of the new forum going live in August.

It bears repeating that people shouldn't expect dramatically wonderful new features -- it's going to look and feel mostly the same.

The main point of all this work is to make everything easier to maintain and upgrade going forward for the next 10 years.

Having said that, it's clear that one benefit of all this work is that I will feel much better about adding some new features, now that I have a better hang of what is easy vs hard to maintain and what changes make upgrading more difficult.

I'm getting excited about unveiling the new forum.

Welcome to the site, ilpro!
So few people seem to use the brush feature..
I see what you mean about the brush size -- let me look into that, and the antialiasing of the brush layer.

It's not too late at all.  I have implemented my own custom spam reporting and related modifications (which are mainly focused on DETECTING AND ALERTING human moderators about suspicious posts and profile changes rather than trying to stop it outright) but I'll be looking into additional 3rd party spam mods.

Let me know which ones you use.

I spent today porting the badges mod, so everyone will be able to keep their forum "flare".

Screenshot Captor / Re: BUG - .objects listed in file tab
« Last post by mouser on July 15, 2015, 01:56 PM »
How strange..
I can't reproduce it here.. Any other clues? Does it happen only when you have a huge number of files in the list, or only when in simple file listing mode, etc.?

Ok i reproduced it in simple file name mode -- except in my case i can see it flash the .object file in the list and then refresh itself to clear it.  That may not happen if there are a ton of files in the list.

Let me see if i can fix.

Meanwhile, can you check if this goes away when you are in thumbnail image panel mode?

Hey folks,

I'm looking for some (MS Windows) software recommendations.

I'm rarely away from home for days at a time -- but on those rare occasions when I am, I'd like to be able to run some software that does motion detection from a webcam and instantly sends updates to an online source (emailing snapshots would be nice).

The use case I have in mind is fairly specific -- if someone breaks into my house, I'd like to have some images of the event.  I presume they would steal the computer and equipment, so the software is going to have to send the photos quickly before it's disconnected.

Any recommendations, paid or free?

Living Room / Re: How do you resist buying ever more powerful PCs?
« Last post by mouser on July 14, 2015, 12:45 PM »
I find in general if I can dismiss the urge quickly, it will go away.

But if i start thinking about it more and more and "analyzing" whether i should buy something -- the "analysis" eventually turns into my brain coming up with some poorly rationalized justification of why i should buy it and why it's really not such a large amount of money to spend.  Sooner or later it's almost as if i have to buy it just to stop thinking about it!

The programming school pre-dates DonationCoder by several years -- it was the first forum I made, and I have a very soft spot in my heart for it.
It was created at a time where there were no other real alternatives -- no good places to get self-teaching assignments for a variety of languages.

Now of course there are tons of such options, massively funded dedicated online learning websites with large support staffs, etc.

So, I think the programming school is probably best handled by others, with us maintaining a great page of information on what sites we would recommend and why, etc.  The new cms will make it easier for us to have such pages.

Alternatively, we could create a new self-teaching programming school of our own, on a sister website using a cms designed for online learning, or on a separate area of our new cms.

But the bottom line is that i think it's probably time to stop having the programming school exist as dozens of private little sub-forums of the dc forum.

I'm working my way through the must-have stuff.. Have been having some long days plodding through slowly, but also having some occasional fun.

I'm making good steady progress each day.

I don't want us to take too big a step backwards, so I'm going to try to get 95% of the forum features working as before, and then go live -- then we can work out the kinks and see if that 5% is still needed, and see what other new stuff we might want.

There are a couple of things that were really messy in code which we would probably be smart to jettison:  The programming School and the "Personal Area" where people could post drafts.  The spaghetti code that was necessary to implement those is probably not worth the maintenance hassle.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Stripping to Text Format
« Last post by mouser on July 13, 2015, 03:41 PM »
Please tell me when I'm overwhelming with specific desires and I'll back off.

not at all! keep 'em coming.

1. in the hotkey config you can configure a hotkey for "Paste last clip as plaintext".
2. or if you use the quick paste menu to paste the last clip (or any clip), it should strip all formatting, because CHS doesn't store such formatting.
3. in addition, if you right-click on a clip (or shift+click) in the quick paste menu, you will get an additional menu that includes a bunch of extra pasting options (altough paste as plain text isn't in there since it shouldn't be needed when using the quick paste menu).

Let me know if #2 does not work for you -- it may require a tweak from me if not.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Pasting From Stack - Questions
« Last post by mouser on July 13, 2015, 01:28 PM »
You can set a hotkey for pop-paste-from-stack, so actually doing the pasting/popping should be pretty straightforward, it's just a matter of queuing things up in the stack that requires extra steps.

Deo recommended searching youtube for the phrase "Let's Play", and it's yielded some excellent results.

I can see that different users make very different playthroughs, and the trick is to find one that matches your tastes.

I started watching a giant playthrough of a game that very much but which i do not want (nor have the time to) play, Witcher 3, and can highly recommend this player:

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Pasting From Stack - Questions
« Last post by mouser on July 13, 2015, 12:57 PM »
That proposed solution might be a bit more difficult than you realize -- however one thing i could do fairly easily is let the user right click and add selected clips to the stack, with CHS maintaining an explicit list of stack clips.

So that at any time you could go and select some clips and add them to the "explicit" stack list, in normal or reverse order, to top or bottom.

If i made this "stack" list visible in the options (or a separate dialog), i might even just let you edit it like a text field, so that it could specify a list of clip id#s, OR raw text.

In essence what I imagine is that the stack would work as it does now, except when you EXPLICITLY add stuff to the EXPLICIT stack, at which point those would pop off until that list was empty.

So if you had 5 clips scattered throughout your database that you wanted to pop off one at a time, youd just go highlight those 5 and right-click and say "add to explicit paste stack"; you would then be asked whether to add them to start or end of stack and in what order.
You could repeat this process to add more clips to the explicit stack.
When pasting from the stack it would proceed through those you just added, going in the order you arranged in the explicit stack.
5849
When you say special options and "paste+" are you talking about using a specific clipboard utility?

Update report:

I have been working hard on porting over and cleaning up the forum customizations and tweaks to smf2.. My hope had been to be able to jettison them all in favor of new core features in smf2, but that has not turned out to be feasible -- we still have some custom stuff that is needed (custom spam handling/reporting/etc).

However, the cleaning process should pay dividends eventually -- after 10 years there is a lot of cruft to get rid of.

Now, originally my thinking was that we might change hosts and move to the a new cms and upgrade to the new smf2 forum all at once, but i'm thinking now we might try to reduce the confusion by first upgrading our forum in place, without messing with CMS or host changing.  That would reduce the possible sources of problems and let me work out the kinks on the new forum more easily.

So, I'm hoping we might do that sometime in August if all goes well...
