Rules out a user profile issue then ... glad the extension helped. There is another one too from the same author for toggling file extensions which I use a lot. Get it here: http://www.msfn.org/....php?showtopic=52524

Try this shell extension http://www.eazyshare...Toggle_2.0_Setup.zip

I have been scouring registry settings and looking around the usual websites but none seem to mention accessing this function via the registry.

Did you try creating a new user and logging in to see if it works in a new user profile?

It will end June 14th at 9am NY time.

You sure about that - do we have to include time travel in the solution too?
5783
A few ideas off the tope of my head:

Are you running in restricted user mode? Never had this problem myself but I run in admin mode to avoid some of these sillinesses *and I have software that doesn't like non-admin)

Have you tried setting it from Ctrol Panel > Folder options ... shouldn't make any difference but it might write the registry entry from there if it won't from Explorer > Tools > Folder Options.

Are you experiencing any other odd problems (no I'm not getting personal) ... like slow shut downs, hanging on Saving User settings during shutdown? If so it could be a corrupted user profile - that can affect writes to the registry for system settings. Try creating a new user, login and see if you have the same problem there.

But I thought onboard graphics didn't allocate that much RAM? If business machines are really set up like this they are unlikely to have large amounts of memory either - I'm sure system admins won't want 50% of available RAM allocated to Vista (which seems to require 512Mb as a minumum standard).

I am running Vista Beta in VMWare ... compared to Windows XP running in the same environment it is

S....O    S.....L.....O....W and that's without access to Aero (since VMWare only has an emulated 16Mb graphic card)

and talk about making you click windows to confirm absolutely everything ...

"Are you sure you want a toilet break?"

"Click here to confirm that you just confirmed you need a toilet break"

"Toilet breaks have not be tested in Windows Vista - please confirm you understand the implications of going for a toilet break"

... Damn now I need to change my pants!

"Are you sure you want to change your pants" etc.....

Nice idea - but it deosn't seem terribly consistent.

but

webshot /url http://www.bbc.co.uk

only outputs the banner from the top of the page ... maybe it is something to do with JavaScript because it does the same thing on my domain lairdswood.com (just the top banner) and the page contents are genreated by JavaScript.

It is getting a bit ridiculous - I have just been upgraded to 4Mb broadband (unexpectedly - I thought I would be stuck with 1Mb because of my location - my neighbouring village still can't get 512Kb consistently). Trouble is you get the impression that more and more of the bandwith gets used up by companies demanding their software can phone home ... its a bit like computers - you chuck in more and more hardware and faster and faster gear only to stand still with what you can actually do on the stupid thing! I love the standard spec for people to use Vista with all the bells and whistles - MS have pretty much guaranteed minimum takeup of Vista in the bsuiness world - how many business machines have a graphics card with 128Mb of video RAM ?

today was an amazing day of games at the world cup, i must say.
Well for people with absolutely no life I'm sure it was.
For the real world it was a yawner.

Interest in the world cup is basically pandering to the 3rd world, civilized people could care less.

Here - here - fancy getting out fro a drink? Oh no all the pubs have football too !

Actually there was a fascinating programme on the BBC on Sunday about systemmic corruption throughout FIFA. I personally hate football (at least as a professional sport - I don't mind my local village league) as it seems to have no redeeming qualities - but the scale of ciorruption going on is truly amazing.

Living Room / Re: Another article on google adsense worries
« Last post by Carol Haynes on June 13, 2006, 04:31 AM »
This may be unrealistic but I think if Google is going to use AdSense as part of their business they have a responsibility to make sure it isn't abused.

A simple way to acheive that is to limit it to domains that are actually checked by human staff at Google rather than making it a free4all. The trouble with free4alls is that even with the best of intentions there is bound to be abuse - and the bigger the system is allowed to get the more fraud you get.

Sure a 'human' system may slow down growth but they would get a better product which was less open to fraud.

Another thing they could do is to have a 'report abuse' system built into the click system so that everyone who is taken to an adsense page is asked the question "Did you personally choose to click a GoogleAd link to get to this page?"

Ditto - but I found myself looking for a download of Worstar for DOS - just to relive the experience.

I spent many happy hours writing DBASE applications in those days (and teaching others to do it) ... funny thing is until I read that article I had completely forgotten about it and Ashton-Tate !!

They were the days when computers were real computers and we were all geeky .... happy days.

Microsoft to ease up on piracy check-ins
By Joris Evers, CNET News.com

Microsoft is cutting the cord on its antipiracy tool.

The software maker this month plans to update the Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications program so that it only checks in with Microsoft once every two weeks, instead of after each boot-up, a company representative said Friday. By year's end, the tool will stop pinging Microsoft altogether, the representative said.

The changes come after a critic likened the antipiracy tool to spyware. He found that the program, designed to validate whether a copy of Windows has been legitimately acquired, checks in with Microsoft on a daily basis. Microsoft did not disclose in any of its documentation that the application would phone home.

Microsoft earlier this week had vowed to better disclose the actions of WGA Notifications. Now the company says it will gradually let go of the program once it is installed on Windows PCs.

That's what I am doing now - I am filtering out everything that isn't delivered via specific addesses and it has certainly cut out a lot of crap. My biggest problem is that my ISP is heavily hit by spammers using dictionary attack techniques and so I get tons of rubbish just because my name is Carol !! Damn nuisance. The only trouble is I get some legitimate mail to this address too.

To lighten the mood slightly ...

I mentioned going to see Janis Ian recently in concert. Not only is she a mainstream artist of 35 years standing but she is totally anti record companies (do a search on here to find and read her article if you haven't read it).

A really neat and refreshing idea at her concert was that all the notices outside the concert hall saying bags will be searched, no cameras and no recording euqipment had been beautifully covered up with a notice saying record what you like and take photos too. The only comment she made from on stage was a request that people avoided photography in the quieter songs for the sake of the rest of the audience. Rock on Janis ...

Sorry nudone - but that was the point - could you honestly expect BPI to say anything else? They are trying to take them to court and this is their stance on the issue. It doesn't mean they are necessarily correct - and I still can't see how a British company can take Russians to court in the UK for something that doesn't appear to be illegal in Russia?
