Yes Jim -
the whole Partial file updating thing is like an extremist version of incremental :D

I wanted to install an app from 1997 on my Win 7 (64bit). The app is Adobe Streamline, discontinued since.

I got this message:
[Window Title]
D:\ENGLISH\STRMLINE\SETUP.EXE

[Content]
The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher.

[OK]

I also noticed that the same CD had 16 and 32bit versions of Acrobat Reader, so I presumed that the app I was trying to install was 32bit.

But it turns out that the installer was 16bit.
This 32/16bit situation has been mentioned a couple of times on dc but no direct solution given (that I found).

Source here (Stackoverflow answer).

Solution (via the above link) given here (ReactOS Forum: Installing 32-bit programs with 16-bit setup launcher stubs)

The Solution was simply to replace the installer setup.exe file with a 32bit version (setup32.exe). You may have to extract the files from the installer exe first. In my case they were all simply in a folder so it was a simple -and successful- job

My solution was probably the easiest of the lot - installer was 3.xx.xxx InstallShield installer. Solutions are also given for other versions and other installers.

Also the Stackoverflow doesnt have the text of the error message (just a screenshot) so it took me a while to find it. Hopefully this post will help others track down the problem.

General Software Discussion / Re: Help me understand Virtual Machine [VMWare]
« Last post by tomos on August 22, 2012, 04:56 AM »
1. There are two VM states: either its O/S is alive or has been shutdown. Creating a snapshot of the latter is much quicker and much smaller in size. That is because a VM snapshot of a running O/S will include its "memory" state. e.g. if you run WinXP in a VM which has been setup with a 1 GB memory, the state of that 1 GB memory is always included in a snapshot unless you shutdown that WinXP before creating a snpshot.

that was my experience as well doing straight forward backup.

Does anyone know:

I'm wondering, can I restore my backup to a different location and use it as a new virtual OS, or would it confuse VMWare because it's exactly the same as the other? I see I can open a virtual machine "which will then be added to your library"

Whatever, to me it seems a bit like mob hysteria with all sorts of wild, fanciful claims springing up. Most of them based on half truths or rumour or someone is reported as having said instead of actual facts. With our favourite govt to hate being the witch.

I agree with this. I believe that the alternative media's approach only undermines their position. They rant to the converted, and dont seem really interested in the truth which is often hidden in the details.
A problem with that is, that it allows people looking from the outside to write them off as a bunch of quacks, and to think/claim that there's no big problem. In that sense, that type of media approach contributes to the problems, rather than exposing them.

I am quick myself to take people and their sources to task for flaws and weaknesses. I find the usual black/white approach to these kind of things a weakness - on both sides.

I'll repeat: I'm no fan of Wikileaks, and I'm no fan of Assange.

And I'll finish by saying that your comparision with a your local footbal team is weak, to say the least. I'll leave it at that, cause if you believe your position, who am I to say it's wrong.

Oh... Well... That makes it perfectly clear. Tobias needs to get someone who can do technical writing that is more understandable.

a summary would be good.

Try this:

It is a combination of Partial File Updating with versioning, where everything is zipped up.
-
I'm using it now for example with my newly installed virtual OS:

the initial backup was compressed from 6.5 to 3.5 GB.
after my second backup, log says:
Transfer amount saved due to partial file updating : 4.7GB
the original folder is now 8.33 GB; the new backup folder size is 6.14 GB

So original folders of 6.5 + 8.33 = 14.88 GB
Backup of the above                 =   6.14 GB

as to how well it works, I cant say. I will do a test restore when I have time, and report back. As I've said elsewhere, I trust SFFS a lot, but with all the options there are occasionally possibilities of user error.

(J-Macs quote copied from another thread)

Tom, can you explain the "synthetic backup" to me? I hadn't created any new profiles since they added that "feature", so I never even looked at it. To be honest I never knew it was there! Tobias doesn’t announce anything when updates are released - you have to discover updates by manually checking. And the Help file doesn’t even contain the word "synthetic" in it.

have a look at Block Level Copying here or in the spoiler. (It seems I have been using it incorrectly at times :-[ )

Block Level Copying
Block Level Copying

Syncovery can detect which parts of a larger file have changed, and copy only the changed blocks rather than the complete file. This feature works similar to Rsync (but it’s not the same).

Copying only the changed blocks can save bandwidth and time, especially over a slow connection. When copying between local disks or in a LAN environment, it can save bandwidth too, but may not always save much copying time, because the source file has to be read in its entirety every time in order to determine the changed blocks.

Only block-oriented file types are eligible for block-level copying. These include database files such as SQL or Outlook PST, as well as drive images and virtual hard disk images (VMs). Stream-based files, on the other hand, will usually cause all blocks to be changed whenever they are modified (for example text documents, spreadsheets, zip files, and photos). Thus block-level copying won’t be able to save much bandwidth with stream-based files.

In Syncovery, block-level copying is called “Partial File Updating”. In many cases, you need to choose only this one checkmark, which is on the Special settings category in the profiles (in Advanced Mode).

The program needs to have fast access to at least one of the sides of the synchronization. The other side may be a low-bandwidth connection. If you are using an Internet Protocol, please note that only SSH/SFTP supports block-level updating directly. The other protocols can only be used with Synthetic Backup (see further down below).

Partial File Updating can work in three different ways:

Mode 1: With Database:
- Source access must be fast
- Destination may be slow
- MD5 checksums are stored in database
- Destination files must not be modified by any other profile, person, or tool
- Destination must be accessed via LAN, VPN, or SSH/SFTP

Mode 2: With Remote Service
[...]

Mode 3: Synthetic Backup:
- similar to Mode 1, plus:
- adds Zip compression, versioning, and filename encoding
- can work locally or with any Internet Protocol for the destination side
- the changed blocks are uploaded in a new, separate zip file every time
- all older zip files must stay on the backup storage, but can be thinned out
- all connection types and Internet Protocols are supported

Mode 1: Slow Destination
In this mode, the speed-up is available when you copy files from a location to which you have fast access (preferably your own hard disk). The destination can be a slow connection, but it must be a normal file system (either LAN or VPN) or SSH/SFTP. For other connections, you can use Synthetic Backup.

Instructions for Mode 1
In your profile, make the following checkmark: Use Partial File Updating, which is on the Special tab sheet when editing the profile in Advanced Mode. The next time you run the profile, a database is created on your hard drive where information needed for the speed-up is stored. The second time you run the profile, you should notice the speed-up.

Mode 2
[...]

Mode 3: Synthetic Backup
This feature is intended for backing up from a local storage to any type of backup storage. The backup can be local or online.

Choose “Synthetic Backup” on the tab sheet Versioning->Synthetic Backup. This will automatically place these additional checkmarks:
- Use Partial File Updating (under Special)
- Filename Encoding (under Versioning)
- Zip Each File Individually (under Zip/Encryption)

Find out more on Synthetic Backup on this page.

at the end there he says Find out more on Synthetic Backup on this page but there is no link...

OTOH I dont think Assange can be fussy at this stage, what exactly he's facing can be argued, but I certainly wouldnt expect a fair trial (if any)

But what fair trial are you referring to? The ONLY trial we can say with certainty that he's facing is the Swedish one. So projecting to a USA trial at this stage is fantasy.

I'm no expert here, but everything I've heard/read seems to indicate that the first goal is to get him to Sweeden - the US & Sweden have a sweet (from USA's point of view) extradition arrangement which would then kick in. I'd say at this stage that it's fantasy to believe that he will simply face a trial in Sweeden with no US interference.

Have you read iphigenie's post:

I wish the UK and EU countries were always so eager to interrogate and prosecute allegations of rape. They are usually pretty quick to sweep them under the carpet, especially between people who have first had consensual sex (which was the case here).

Now I find it quite possible that Assange has a certain arrogance and lack of attention and that he might miss messages that say "not again" or "not in this way", and that starting again would not be a crime, but refusing to stop would be. But even as a stringent feminist I find it hard to believe that this is all about this.

No country threatens to storm an embassy for a rape, and nobody talks of sending death squads and it being terrorist activity on the topic of condoms.

hi Jim
you must have gotten lost off the mailing list! It's not really a major update in the sense of big changes - but very fair in the sense that there hasnt been a paid update for years, i mean in spite of the constant updating. (I seem to be having "inarticulate day" today.)

Here's a copy of the email:
Spoiler
Dear Subscribers,

a few days ago we released version 6 of Super Flexible File Synchronizer under the new product name SYNCOVERY. In addition, there's a completely new web site at http://www.syncovery.com. It will be much easier to find the information you are looking for on the new web site.

After one year of development, we are confident that the improvements will be great to have for all our users and customers. Version 6 uses new registration codes and you can order your license or upgrade right now. Many customers will receive a free upgrade, if their license purchase was within the past two years.

The page for new orders is this one:
http://www.syncovery.com/purchase/

And the upgrading system is here:
http://www.syncovery.com/upgrade/

This upgrading URL is used for both free and payed upgrades.

The list of new features can be seen here:
http://www.syncovery.com/v6/

To facilitate the migration for our corporate users, version 6 for Windows is also available under the old product name on http://www.superflexible.com. It will be updated for a short while but eventually be phased out. For the Mac version, this step does not seem necessary.

Super Flexible File Synchronizer and Syncovery can be installed side-by-side as two entirely independent products.

For those customers who are using the ExtremeSync Remote Service, please note that you need to replace it with the new Syncovery Remote Service and update all clients and servers at once, unless you want to keep both Remote Services running during the transition period.

1) real-time monitoring of file changes, instead of scheduled backups. However, it doesn't backup files just as they're changed - it queues up changes and backs up periodically. IMHO this is the best of both worlds - it doesn't need to re-scan the backup set, it knows what to backup because of the monitoring, but you don't waste CPU time, disk I/O, network bandwidth and backup storage by constantly backing up files that are modified often.
2) the background backups run at a priority level where it doesn't put much strain on my computer, but I can hit "backup now" and enable "turbo mode" to get the job done ASAP.
3) it has VSS/Shadow Copy support, so in-use files can be backed up.
4) the versioning system - both that you can set it to auto-purge, but also the scheme (which is similar to rsnapshot and Apple's time machine): keep X copies for the last four hours, a daily set for the past week, and a weekly set for stuff older than that.

I'll compare (to the best of my knowledge) with Syncovery/SFFS

1) "it queues up changes and backs up periodically. IMHO this is the best of both worlds" - it cant compete with that. [/edit] Either it's been updated or I missed this: there is an option when monitoring folders to set a 'minimum pause between actions'. See this dc post [/edit]
OTOH, it's never gotten in my way while working or noticably slowed things down. I did install the related service which, IIRC, is optional.
With Timeline, can you set how often the backups are made, or is there a default (- how often then?)
2) not sure here, all I can say is it hasn't slowed me that I can remember (i.e. if so, not within the last couple of years)
3) the same
4) I like the idea of that scheme. There is the danger that you work intensively on one document and end up with only one backup of it, so I dont use it myself (Filehamster implemented something similar which I disabled).
Re SFFS, it's easiest to just give you a look at versioning tabs:

And I haven't found another piece of backup software that runs unobtrusively in the background and does local, versioned, on-modified backups.

what have you tried?

I would have thought SFFS would be your type of backup programme - have you tried it? Seems to me it does all you want, backups are very accessible. It's very versatile, I find that a problem at times - not knowing which goddamn option to choose- and have run into problems because of that.
But:
the developer is very quick to reply to emails or in the forum
I've had it a few years now and there was only one paid update - quite recently, in spite of the fact that there are very regular updates.

Oh, yeah: it's called Syncovery now - www.syncovery.com

General Software Discussion / Re: Help me understand Virtual Machine [VMWare]
« Last post by tomos on August 20, 2012, 03:43 AM »
As for snapshots vs. file-copying, snapshots are definitely prefarable, unless you're dealing with very small virtual drives, since snapshots don't copy the entire virtual disk image - instead, unless I've misunderstood things and the file sizes in my VM dirs :), it "freezes" the previous image and stores modified blocks in a new file.

with VMWare Workstation, I'm looking at a cost of 177.68 euros = almost US$220. (That's including tax.)
So I'll stick with the backup solution ;-)

I'm now using a backup programme that (after the initial backup) just backs up the modified blocks. I guess I could test it by restoring to a different folder and run it as a new VM. Maybe, sometime...
