General Software Discussion / Re: LastPass - What are your thoughts?
« Last post by Deozaan on January 22, 2011, 05:40 AM »
I started using LastPass when Gawker allowed my password to get leaked to the world.

It's a little troublesome with the UI, and an offline mode seems like it would be nice (thanks for that link CleverCat, I'll check it out!), but how are you going to login to a website when you're offline anyway?

Other than that I really like it and use it, and even recommend it to others when they ask about something like that.

EDIT: According to the description of LastPass Pocket, it appears as though all browser extension versions of LastPass support offline access to the database:

Provides backup capability and offline access for your LastPass vault. All extensions have full offline support. LastPass Portable is recommended over using LastPass Pocket.

It's the reason, not the wait!

I agree completely. That's why I cancelled the installation and used a different program.

From what I can tell it looks very unlikely that Sony will win this lawsuit. The judge(s?) is/are already questioning/denying certain requests and [insert proper legal terms here] by Sony. Such as whether or not the court actually has jurisdiction on this case in California.

The solution here is obviously to participate in every NANY for the next several years until you the number of years you've participated gets into the double digits.

Developer's Corner / Re: GarageGames: $99 Game Engines (with Source!)
« Last post by Deozaan on January 20, 2011, 11:58 PM »
GarageGames do have TorqueX which is XNA (C#/.NET IIRC) but they just announced in that post that they're discontinuing it in sometime in February.

See more info here:

TorqueX – February 28th will be the last day that you will be able to purchase TorqueX. The community is tight knit and working on a their own version of the engine, so for the next thirty days you will still be able to buy TorqueX and assign those licensees to other developers through a studio access panel. Discontinuing TorqueX is a hard decision for us, especially when considering how dedicated this community is. I would personally like to take the time to thank Pino. He’s a rock star and anyone using TorqueX knows that. We are still fans of XNA and we have a lot of time invested in the API. Don’t be surprised if/when an XNA based product finds it's way back to GarageGames. We have put a lot of effort into a future Windows Phone 7 product; however, we are taking a step back to reevaluate direction on all emerging platforms. Your opinions are greatly appreciated.

Also see the TorqueX product page.

Looks like their site is experiencing troubles, too. I guess those 1.3 million people are all logging in about now claiming their gift cards. :D

I just used your referral link but I'm not sure I got the Amazon deal. It mentioned something about Amazon not being liable.....yada, yada, at the bottom but after submitting a throwaway address it showed me a restaurant free appetizer deal. Guess I'll find out soon enough!

Thanks for the heads-up and the referral link!

Jim

I sure hope you got it, but I think the offer ended already. :-/

Well considering they just made the announcement late last night, I'm under the impression that the $99 price is going to be valid for at least a few weeks still.

EDIT:
Well, if I can use C# (easily), I'll buy. Need to figure that one out...
Also, I already own Torque 2D, so I could have told you that the engine is written in C++ and it uses a scripting language called TorqueScript. No (easy) way to interface it with C# that I know of.

I received an e-mail a few minutes ago telling me that my gift card was ready to be redeemed. And I just successfully redeemed it to my Amazon.com account.

I don't know if you should expect this trend, but my gift card was ready to be redeemed approximately 23 hours after I received my "confirmation" e-mail that I had ordered the gift card.

Also, thanks to everyone who used my referral link. I got the gift card for free!

Living Room / Re: 8 stupid amazon products with impressively sarcastic reviews

These are great.  My all time favorite is the Three Wolf Moon t-shirt with 1878 hilarious reviews.

Heh heh:

Just wanted to post on here, be careful to order your shirt from here only. I was looking to get one cheaper, and bought one off Ebay, but didn't read it carefully enough. You guessed it, one wolf, three moons. I mean its ok to wear I guess, but if you look carefully you can tell its not the real thing. It hasn't made me as confident as the real one would of, but at least I THINK about the real one when I wear it, and that helps a bit I guess.

Don't try to save a couple bucks! NOT WORTH IT.

It should be noted that the $99 price point is only temporary, but how long the "sale" lasts and what the price will be afterward are still unknown.

@Everyone, the "limited time" language is sort of up to you. We want to see how the community reacts to such a low price. We would like it to stay around for a while since we think that the price ( or some number near it) is really beneficial for our community. We're in this together ;)

if you click on a user, you go to their profile page, which then lists each YEAR's badge.

Aha! And I see that they use the same graphic as the ones here on the forum, which explains why they have the leading zero, so they can be used as a counter AND a year.

Brilliant! Thanks!

This might be nitpicky, but is there any way to list which NANYs a person participated in on the badge page?

You've been patiently waiting and the time has come. GarageGames is back! We've changed our name back to GarageGames and we are dropping the prices on all products to $99.00 to celebrate our new direction and return to our indie roots. It's been a storied ten years for the GarageGames name and we are looking forward to ushering in the next decade.

The return of GarageGames is much more than a $99 price point. It's a commitment to the community who grew with us over the years. It's a return to the values that brought people together to make great games without the burden of unbearable pricing or royalties. Our community is a diverse group of people who are willing and able to help each other grow as game developers and we can't wait to take that community to the next level.

I'm glad to see GarageGames alive again. They have quite an amazing 3D engine so the $99 price point with full source code and no royalties is really amazing! The 2D engine shouldn't be overlooked either.

For years, EFF has been warning that the anti-circumvention provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act can be used to chill speech, particularly security research, because legitimate researchers will be afraid to publish their results lest they be accused of circumventing a technological protection measure. We've also been concerned that the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act could be abused to try to make alleged contract violations into crimes.

We've never been sorrier to be right. These two things are precisely what's happening in Sony v. Hotz. If you have missed this one, Sony has sued several security researchers for publishing information about security holes in Sony’s PlayStation 3. At first glance, it's hard to see why Sony is bothering — after all, the research was presented three weeks ago at the Chaos Communication Congress and promptly circulated around the world. The security flaws discovered by the researchers allow users to run Linux on their machines again — something Sony used to support but recently started trying to prevent. Paying lawyers to try to put the cat back in the bag is just throwing good money after bad. And even if they won — we'll save the legal analysis for another post — the defendants seem unlikely to be able to pay significant damages. So what's the point?

The real point, it appears, is to send a message to security researchers around the world: publish the details of our security flaws and we'll come after youwith both barrels blazing. For example, Sony has asked the court to immediately impound all "circumvention devices" — which it defines to include not only the defendants' computers, but also all "instructions," i.e., their research and findings. Given that the research results Sony presumably cares about are available online, granting the order would mean that everyone except the researchers themselves would have access to their work.

[EDIT]That article is pretty popular right now so the site may be slow or non-responsive.[/EDIT]

I was following the news as it unfolded over the past couple weeks, and was very delighted to see this Carnegie Mellon professor not only fearlessly mirror geohot's site after Sony issued the takedown, but almost dare Sony to try to get him to take it down as well.

There was a ~2 minute segment in a Minecraft video where the player met a little slime creature. That short segment inspired this song/video.

Awww, that was awesomely cute :)

The funny thing about it is that the song that immortalized Squishy lasts twice as long as him. The slime's lifetime was about 2 minutes. The song is >4 minutes long. :D :(

Forgive me if I'm stressing this too much, but I believe that one of the primary goals of this project should be to encourage and facilitate a community by creating a game that is easy to create/mod content, easy to upload and download player created content (so you can share with your friends) and perhaps even has some sort of central repository where players can browse, submit, download, and rank the player created content.

With that in mind, what are some types of games that lend themselves well to a community like that?

With TD games you could have player made maps, perhaps even customized campaigns and challenges (e.g. "survive 50 waves with only 5,000 resources," or "Only use gatling gun turret," etc.)

With puzzle games players could create lots of different puzzles. Depending on what kind of puzzle game and the main gameplay mechanic behind it, there could be room for lots of variation (again, think of ChuChu Rocketw (or RUSH), The Incredible Machinew, Portal, box-pusher gamesw, Lemmingsw)

It could be a relatively simple platformer game (Super Mario Bros.w or Within a Deep Forestw) with a level editor. Again, you could have players created individual levels, entire customized campaigns (a series of levels) or challenge courses.

It could be more of an adventure style game (like the old-school Zelda games) with customizable world maps and dungeons. We could (eventually) have a huge DC world where everyone gets to contribute a section of it and a dungeon or two. :) That would be fun, but probably pretty large in scope.

Could have a Worms-alike, but I don't think there's a whole lot of player-created goodness involved. You could make your own stages, but personally I don't see much value in human made stages over ones that are randomly generated.

It could be a (Mode 7w style) racing game (e.g. Super Mario Kartw) with customizable tracks and circuits, perhaps even customizable battle arenas as well.

As I mentioned before, it could be some sort of sim where you can build a city or whatever and share or visit other player's creations.

Arcade-style games (Pac-Man, Bomberman, Mario Bros.w) with customizable arenas. Though these arenas would run out of variety pretty quick, it seems.

Well, that's about all I can think of for now. . . (and most of that didn't even touch on multiplayer).

But anyway, the point is, in order to facilitate a community around the game and project, we'd have to make sure there were easy to use, intuitive tools to create the content with. That means we'd either have to create such tools ourselves or find them already made. The good news is that having such tools will make it easier for us to create the "main" content for the game as well.

Also, once we have an idea what kind of game we want to make, then we can start focusing on what engine to use, as then we will be able to select the one that fits our requirements the best.

Someone (Lashiec?) said in IRC that the article is a bit obtuse if you're not familiar with the game. So YMMV. :)
