Post New Requests Here / IDEA: MIDI Capture
« Last post by Carol Haynes on June 16, 2006, 08:54 AM »
I have a program that plays music from a score by using midi data to play via the built in MIDI soundcard interface. I can't save the midi dada as a file though.

Anyone got any idea how to capture the midi data stream and output the file as a MIDI file?

My most favorite key is D minor...  :D

The Dorian mode is good too ;)

I think it is not easy. There are no uninstall options and if you delete the file windows simply regenerates it.

The trouble is that you have to let it run occasionally to be able to download updates. According to the article I posted above some people can't get critical updates without WGA (which is another area where MS have fallen down on their stated policy).

There is a pretty simple solution to avoid that - use a different email address for every contact - then you find out how the idiots and b******s are.

You can do this quite easily with Yahoo and others by using the anonymous email address generator. You still get all your mail in one place but you at least know which email address has been used.

My problem (the multiple 'carol' problem) is that when I signed up for my current ISP I had spam in my inbox when I opened it for the first time !! OK I know you say I should change ISP but I am happy with the service they provide in terms of internet access and mostly I do my own thing with email but it is  annoying.

Personally I never sign up to websites that have no content until you register with them - I find it really offputting. Am I paranoid?

Actually, placing the + in front of the "l" in carol will only cause the "l" to repeat.  You want to enclose carol in () so the whole word repeats instead:
carol.*carol.*(carol)+.*

Thanks - I wish I could get to grips with RegEx but everytime I start to follow tutorials my eyes glaze and I have to go and lie down for a while.

I presume I can use:

carol.*(carol)+.*

for 2 or more occurences of the string?

Just posted another article regarding WGA in another thread. Check out https://www.donation...10.msg28415#msg28415 if you haven't already.

The interesting thing is that by installing this as a critical update MS have actually gone against their own declared policy on the use of AutoUpdate. When it was first designed MS repeatedly argued that it would only be used for critical updates - no user actually needs WGA at all - it is only for MS's advantage.

Living Room / SanDisk accused of "Shades of Sony Rootkit"
« Last post by Carol Haynes on June 16, 2006, 02:37 AM »
The following is a summary of an article I read - unfortunately it isn't available without paid subscription but I thought it important enought to point out the issue here:

Sandisk Cruzer Micro 4GB flash drives.
Plug in the card reader, and up pops LaunchPad and wants to install Skype and other apps.
Not unusual Flash cards often come preinstalled with software.
But autoplay is off so how did it launch?

Deleted the files from the Flash drive. Insert the USB drive again - same thing happens.
Reformat the drive and it all happens again.

It is a "smart" Flash drive including U3 technology which emulates a CD-ROM drive (for part of its data area).
Autoplay is enabled by default for CD-ROM drives and you can't delete files from a CD-ROM.

There is an uninstall utility from U3.com to delete U3 technology (but SanDisk hide the fact) that makes the drive into a plain Flash drive again.

Shades of the Sony BMG rootkit!
No evidence to believe that Sandisk installed software, let alone installed a rootkit but I want to install software under control.

Beware of USB devices! If Flash drives can do this then it could any USB device next!

Orginal article by Ryan Russell in the WindowsSecret Newsletter.

The question left unanswered is what happens when a non-savvy user tries this - I would suspect that a lot of people would simply install Skype etc. if they have never heard of it assuming it was something to do with their new super duper flash card !!!

Interesting article with a few ideas on WGA from Brian Livingstone's WindowSecrets article:

Read it here http://windowssecret.../comp/060615/#story1

It is aquite a long series of articles but it told me some things I didn't know and showed up some of the bugs and problems people are encountering even with legitimate copies bought direct from MS.

Genuine Advantage is Microsoft spyware

By Brian Livingston

Windows Genuine Advantage — the controversial program Microsoft auto-installed as a "critical security update" on many PCs starting on Apr. 25 — not only causes problems for many users but has now been proven to send personally identifiable information back to Redmond every 24 hours.

This behavior clearly fits any plausible definition of "spyware." Some tech writers have said categorizing WGA as spyware is arguable. But I have no hesitation in calling the program a security nightmare that Microsoft should never have distributed in its present form.

In my May 25 newsletter, I called Microsoft's WGA download a "severe blunder." It causes serious problems for some legitimate Windows users and was sprung on customers with no notice other than a press release the day before.

No PC-using company that values security and reliability can allow a program like WGA to send data to a distant server, download additional software, morph its behavior, or remotely change the functionality of Windows (as I describe below). I don't believe individuals should put up with this, either.

Today, I'll explain the problems and let you know what you can do to fix them.

If the spyware label fits, wear it

Actually having gone back to Mailwasher (combined with FirstAlert and SpamCop) after a long break I am finding it very useful. The 'multiple cc to carol*' filter is quite effective against my ISP spam as it is usually addressed to at least 10 'carols' and so is easily identifiable. As I get legitimate mail to that address I'll move subscriptions to alternatives and then eventually I can just do a 'dump the lot' approach on that address.

Another nice feature of Registrar (which I had forgotten) is that if you have .REG files you can open them in Registrar and edit them as if they were a set of registry keys - which is great as it means no more manually editing in Notepad !!
5770
Doesn't work from the context menu but try Resplendence Registrar Registry Manager. It has lightening fast searches and it lists all occurrences. You can also keep bookmarks and favourite tweaks.

The Pro version is not free but there is a free lite version (not sure what facilities are limited though).

I have use the pro version for a few years and it has been rock solid. Also has Reg utilities for backing up and compacting the registry, access to registry key security settings, a registry monitor and editing the registries of remote computers amongst others.

Here are a couple of pictures of it in action ...
