i think some would argue they are chaotic, and with some justification.
but i hope i can make up for it by offering support here on the forum :)

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: Creating Aliases With Optional Parameters
« Last post by mouser on August 06, 2015, 12:11 AM »
quick response first: perhaps the easiest solution would be to create 2 aliases, one for when you have both parameters and one for if you have only one.
there are probably other solutions using regex, though i dont know off hand of a way to have a default parameter.. it's an interesting idea for a feature to add to the alias system..

Try the new beta site curt (msg me for access if you don't have the info), and see if you can see the videos (youtube and vimeo) on the youtube test thread.  That uses the new html5 frame embed method.

i think i know the answer to that.
can you try this:

if you go to "More Interface Options" and change the "Canvas Background color" does that control the color uses behind the shadow?
5755
stephen sent me a link to an html5 style of youtube embedding using an iframe; ill see if i can switch us over to that to try.
5756
youtube should work on old and new forum, even now. are they not?
5757
The default search in the upgraded forum is likely to yield slightly different results -- because the current version here was highly modified and improved by dc member Wordzilla, and i have not attempted to bring across those changes.  The new search has some advantages too, including nice highlighting of found search words.  My expectations are that the results may differ but it will just be a matter of getting used to it.  If we find the new search is inadequate we can think about making our own improvements later.
5758
no, both sites wont be online -- the new upgrade will just happen on the existing content.
all of the original posts will all be accessible, and at the same urls.
the change won't be so dramatic.

It is configurable, on the "Special Effect Options" tab:

Some of you may know my 2xl simulator page: https://www.donation...ouser/2XL/index.html

It's a flash-based recreation I made of an amazing little toy that i grew up with, which used 8 track tapes to create the illusion of a sentient little robot that told jokes and gave you quizes etc.  It was a brilliant little toy.

Just for fun, I was thinking of recreating it on one of those tiny-pc devices like a rasberry pi, arduino, etc.

I'm not much of a hardware person though, and i am hoping to find a hardware person who might put together the hardware and leave me to do the software.

I don't really have a preference for one kit or another, raspberry pi, arduino, whatever. But there are some requirements:
The device needs to have (at least) 4 buttons in a line , a speaker loud enough to hear the words, and a small lcd so that the user can scroll through carts to select.  ideally the lcd will be over the buttons so that it can be used to show button labels.

Ideally i'd like to rewrite the code in python or java -- and there has to be an mp3 playing library for the device (this is important).
And i has to be able to support a memory card with a few hundred mb of data files.

Ideally the less power the better, as it would be fun to make this battery operated.  But that's not a show stopper.

This is purely a for-fun project, no money to be made or fame to be hard.  If anyone is interested let me know?

so just about everything is migrated and implemented on the new forum, and we could switch over whenever we want -- fixing any lingering issues on the live site..
5762
im not opposed to adding it but i'm newly conservative about adding features if they require too many messy changes to the codebase.. it's one of the drawbacks of using someone else's code -- maintenance difficulties.  remind me again later to look into adding this.

Living Room / New printers that come with refillable ink tanks?
« Last post by mouser on August 05, 2015, 02:25 AM »
We've talked before about the racket with inkjet printer ink -- practically giving away printers and then charging you an arm and a leg for miserly ink cartridges.

A recent article discusses Epson's new plans to offer consumers an alternative -- a more expensive printer built to be refilled with cheap ink.

Epson, the maker of my nightmare printer, has finally put an end to the horror of ink cartridges, at least for people willing to throw cash at the problem up front. The five new EcoTank series printers look like normal models, only they have containers on their sides that hold gobs and gobs of ink. How much? Years’ worth. Enough that your children—or at least mine—could go on a two-hour coloring-page-printing bender and you wouldn’t even notice.

If you change the setting and then manually exit SC, and then restart SC is the option remembered?

And are other settings saved normally?

You can ignore this advice -- I have added a feature on the new board that will let you view your old posts in the My Personal Area section.
5768
On this forum, we created a special forum section called "My Personal Area" where people could write posts that only they could see.

It has served as a way for people to make "draft" posts, etc.

That section will not be migrated to the new forum because it involves too much ugly hard-to-maintain hacking of the forum codebase.

I will try to add some kind of different draft-post functionality, but the My Personal Area posts will *NOT* migrate.

So please backup any that you have made that you want to keep.

Actually cancel this request -- i should be able to make it possible for users to see their own previous posts in the My Personal Area section, though not add new ones.

Mafia 3 has been anounced! Yay!
Here's someone talking about how Mafia2 gets a bad reap and how he hopes they don't listen too hard to the people saying that the new one has to have big changes:
http://www.gamesrada...ts-brilliant-quirks/

This guy nails that game and talks about why Mafia2 was so special.  If you're on the fence I encourage you to read it.  Mafia 2 is one of my favorite games I've played.

Living Room / Startups and the Big Lie
« Last post by mouser on August 02, 2015, 12:02 AM »
Often it feels to me like economic success is one big pyramid scheme... Here's an article about the central role lying plays in the startup model where companies raise billions based on a mirage of get-rich-quick success they create.

They have little choice. Funding is contingent on growth, but that growth can only happen if no one really understands the funding situation. Founders have to tell the lie – that everything is fine, that a feature is going to launch even though the engineer for that feature hasn’t been hired yet, that payroll will run even though the VC dollars are still nowhere on the horizon.

Lying is a requisite and daily part of being a founder, the grease that keeps the startup flywheel running.

Living Room / Re: Micro Reviews of Board Games From a Non-Competetive Perspective
« Last post by mouser on August 01, 2015, 10:35 PM »
Here's a new board (card) game mini-review, for Boss Monster:

pic1732644_md.jpg

https://boardgamegee...n-building-card-game

Lately i've played a bunch of a card game called Boss Monster (i've only played two-player).  It feels a little bit like Star Realms -- the images and cards are fun to look at and read.
Each player builds a dungeon and tries to kill heroes that visit them.
It plays really fast and fun, with a good amount of solitaire feel but also plenty of take-that and press your luck elements.

There's a lot of luck but a ton of strategy.  Most of all it's *FUN* as heck.

I would say however that while the basic rules are simple, there are a fair number of non-obvious specific card rules and interactions on cards that can be confusing -- this isn't a game for young kids who aren't quite sophisticated in terms of planning out multiple interactions.

Really great game, highly recommended (there are expansions too).

web browser pre-configured with bookmark toolbar of useful pages?
5773
a nice simple text editor -- maybe one of those that is designed to hide other stuff so you can just focus on writing?
5774
yes, https will be available before we go live. it's not available on the TEST site yet though.
