Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: [Feature Request] Encryption? Password Protection?
« Last post by rjbull on December 10, 2013, 04:10 PM »
If you tell Clipboard H+S to ignore your browser (where you are pasting all kinds of passwords and user names) it then ignores everything you copy or paste into your browser beyond user names and passwords - this is not a solution.
If you're replying to my suggestion, you tell CHS to ignore eveything coming from KeePass.  It still copies everything you clip from your browser.  This idea assumes, of course, that the web page doesn't show passwords as plain text, but that's very rare.

PixBuilder Studio - Free photo editing software - WnSoft
I haven't tried their products, but their flagship is the well-respected PicturesToExe slideshow program, so I'd expect Pixbuilder Studio to be as good as any freeware.

General Software Discussion / Re: Moving notes from Keynote to Evernote
« Last post by rjbull on December 08, 2013, 04:50 PM »
Do you mean the original desktop version of Evernote, or the current cloud or at least primarily cloud application?  If the latter, you may like to know that RightNote has Evernote cloud-type support, and there's a DC thread by tranglos saying that RightNote is what Keynote 2 should have been.  But, the Evernote feature is only available in the Pro version of RightNote, which is $59.95 for a new license.

It's mentioned in numerous DC threads.  Here are two, the first being tranglos' own:

General Software Discussion / Re: What's your preferred File Manager
« Last post by rjbull on December 08, 2013, 04:34 PM »
I for one use FAR Manager 3, i'm probably too used to the console "feel" (i've used Volcov Commander and Norton Commander back in the days).
I'm not very fond of "graphical interfaces" for file managers, that's the reason why i don't like Total Commander.
Total Commander is as close as you'll get to a console feel in a GUI program  :)  If you like console mode, there's also the excellent XTree-like ZTreeWin

Since version 3 FAR Manager it is freeware (actually opensource so you can even modify it if you want to), it has a new LUA scripting support and quite a few good plugins/scripts.
[...]
I also use a lot of portable apps with it for image viewing/editing, development and other stuff
I didn't know it had gone freeware.  But, isn't it a slightly strange hybrid?  I was under the impression that though console mode, it kept its configuration details in the Registry.  That also means it isn't portable.

The author of the multiarc plugin for Total Commander wrote this in his readme:
Some ideas was "stolen" 8-) from FAR file manager by Eugene Roshal. Thank you, Eugene - you write a GREAT program but I prefer GUI applications in
GUI environment. 8-)

it has to be something I can use in a quick-N-dirty fashion when dealing with client networks that may or may not have access to the fancy hat account for a variety of reasons.
Would Nir Sofer's SearchMyFiles do enough for you?

General Software Discussion / Re: AllMyNotes or Notezilla - Looking for a Comparison
« Last post by rjbull on December 01, 2013, 03:45 PM »
AllMyNotes is decent enough, but -- for what it's worth -- I've put it on the back burner now as I think RightNote is the best of its type.
AllMyNotes has a particularly pretty GUI but, with the caveat that I haven't tried all the competitors (which are too numerous to thoroughly investigate), I think I'd agree.

for straight knowledge capture and retention I think you have to go a long way to beat Cintanotes.
That's why I used to/still do like the earlier Evernote desktop application.  Cintanotes is great, but doesn't have the image capture that Evernote does, assuming you actually need that.

a problem caused by another program messing up the clipboard chain in windows and preventing CHS from getting notifications about new clipboard contents.

Just for the record, Typing Assistant has sometimes conflicted with CHS, but not as badly as it has with ArsClip.  Typing Assistant is primarily a text autocompletion program, but it has an optional clipboard tracking feature.  The occasional conflict happens even when this feature is turned off.

Wondering if it's worth it for us amatuers
Depends on how keen you are!  Probably more interest to us old-time real photographers that grew up on film
Note: you need Photoshop CS3 or newer to use it as a plugin.
Elements 9, 10 or 11, too (fortunately).

Thanks...  this license is for v3, while they only appear to offer v4 as a download.  In fact, you have to enter your e-mail address for the free v3 license, and you get a new page with a link for v3.  It's only a 277 MB download...  [sigh]  :o

Horst Schaeffer's ClipText can read text from a file and send it to the clipboard.  I once had a batch file that did that with several files, in such quick succession that neither ArsClip nor CHS could be relied upon to catch all the clips.  I had to put delays in between each call to ClipText to slow things down.  I think this is a Windows problem, not specifically CHS.

I have a license for WinCatalog 2011, but never really used it.  I wanted a cataloguer that would automatically import FILE_ID.DIZ and FILES.BBS data as descriptions in its catalogue, and it didn't do that.

General Software Discussion / Re: Alternative to Linkman
« Last post by rjbull on September 22, 2013, 11:47 AM »
All I'd really like is a standalone and portable bookmark manager that just saves the site names and URLs (with an optional notes field) in a tree list - and invokes your default browser when you click on one. Some keyword or tag feature might be nice
LinkStash has all that.  It can be portable, and the license permits portable as well as HD use.

plus the ability to sort them and use folders - plus print the list out as a CSV.
It has a tag feature, but I've never used it.  Export is only to HTML, IE Favorites, Mozilla/Netscape Favorites, or a proprietary format.[/quote]

I think LinkStash is great; I'm using 3.0.0 and haven't had any crashes.

From the resources list on the K-Meleon site, there's Bookmark Manager:
Bookmark Manager (BKM for short) is an open source tool for managing your bookmarks. You'll find everything about this tool on this Web site. Current news, new versions and other information.

vbBKM and pyBKM

BKM consists of two projects: vbBKM and pyBKM. vbBKM is a program developed in Visual Basic which works on the Microsoft Windows platform. pyBKM is a tool developed in Python running on multiple platforms.

vbBKM is a stable product and has as many features as any other bookmark management software available. But pyBKM is at very early stages and is not ready for production use, yet. See the two project pages (vbBKM and pyBKM) for details.
No idea what it's like, sorry...

photoshop is probably overkill (not to mention that I probably couldn't afford a copy
Photoshop Elements?  Though for your suggested uses, even that might be overkill.  If you get to see NPhoto magazine (independent Nikon magazine), their Issue 23, Aug. 2013, has a round-up of Photoshop CC, Elements 11, Lightroom 5, Nikon Capture NX2, DxO Optics Pro 8, Phase One CaptureOne Pro 7, Serif Photoplus X6, and Paintshop Pro X5, not all of which seem strictly comparable.  There's also Google's freeware Picasa, though some people don't like the way it tries to own all your photos, and by the looks of things, recent versions try hard to shepherd you into Google+ sharing.

Post New Requests Here / Re: Remember where I got the Download
« Last post by rjbull on September 17, 2013, 04:06 PM »
Gizmo's latest TechSupportAlert newsletter references his article This Download Manager could be the Next Big thing!, on EagleGet Universal Download Manager.  One of the subsequent comments says this about Free Download Manager:
by chishold on 17. September 2013 - 3:53  (110767)

My favourite FDM feature is the ability to create a description file for the download. I find this especially useful for software downloads.

The description file will contain the download URL, the date of the download and the description entered; if no description is given, the description file will not be created. The name of the description file is of the form: [filename].[ext].dsc.txt and therefore would be found adjacent to the actual download in an alphabetical folder listing.

A fictional description example:

    Acme Widget 2.34
Small, fast widget manager. Monitor system for new widgets, manage or remove existing widgets.
    Windows 2000 and above.
    Requires Widget Platform 1.01

The program name and version helps when the file name doesn't change between versions, which is the usual case.

A short blurb can usually be copied from the first paragraph on the "About" web page for the program. It should contain enough keywords to successfully search for later. When I was trying duplicate file finders, I downloaded a dozen installers, many with names like SetupDD.exe and dd.zip, whiich give little indication of their purpose or product name.
[...]
I haven't tried this myself, but it looks a good idea, though I'd rather FDM used a "standard" format like DESCRIPT.ION or FILES.BBS.

The drawback with %WindowTitle% is that it includes the name of the application clipped from, which, when gathering information from the web or desktop applications, has to be edited out.  However, I suppose there's no way to avoid at least some editing and one could probably semi-automate some of it by using CHS's other functions or third-party tools, though then it's two clip actions rather than just one.

mouser,

CHS has a template macro %Title%.  ClipMate has a template macro #TITLE#.  The two are completely different, viz.:

CHS:
Firefox [firefox.exe]

URL: http://www.horstmuc.de/win.htm
[ Web site visited 2013-09-08 ]

Horst Schaeffer's Software Pages

ClipMate:
Horst Schaeffer's Software Pages MemPad PopSel Qsel Reminder

http://www.horstmuc.de/win.htm

[ Web site visited 08/09/2013, 22:45:15 ]

Slight difference in formatting, but the point I want to make is that %Title% doesn't mean what the average non-coder end-user thinks it means.  What I want is more what ClipMate does, at least where possible with Web clips: the title as defined in the page's HTML, <TITLE>Horst Schaeffer's Software Pages</TITLE> for the above example.  Or, the first line of text for other clips.  %Title% giving the name of the application clipped from isn't what most of us would expect.  If you coders still need it, please can there be a new macro for page/clip title?  Maybe that's the equivalent of %ExcerptText% but with plain-pasting, not escaped newlines and tabs.

Thanks...

General Software Discussion / Re: What is the currently best Desktop Search software?
« Last post by rjbull on September 07, 2013, 03:26 PM »
far and away my favorite is File Locator Pro.
I've had good service from BareGrepPro, but it is after all primarily a grep, and often I want Boolean searches.  Archivarius does well for me, but I don't index it often enough.  It would be nice to have a DC discount on FLPro.

I'd like to know how much WordStar emulation the current version of Zeus has.
I'll be honest; the emulation modes in Zeus rely heavily on user feedback.
-Jussi Jumppanen (September 03, 2013, 08:12 PM)
I think the problem (from my POV) is twofold.  (1) WordStar works completely differently from just about all Windows editors I've seen with many operations needing two-key commands like Ctrl+K,B, and marked blocks being persistent: and (2) Microsoft stole important WordStar keys like Ctrl+X etc. for its own purposes, rendering them hard to recover for WordStar users.  Changing from one system to the other requires a radical change of personality.  I doubt you have many "pure text" users who aren't coders, so it may not be worth pursuing.  Is it possible for users to do their own keymapping?  And is such a feature available in the free version?
