General Software Discussion / Re: Appget - user-run software update program
« Last post by Grorgy on August 10, 2007, 06:08 AM »
I've been using this for a little while now and I have 2 problems with it. 1. Beta versions, it would be good to have an option for seeing them or not and 2. Updates for other operating systems, ie, i run windows xp and the latest (highest number anyway) is the vista version, which isnt for xp.

They are my only complaints, apart from that its a great little program and I run it every so often, usually when i check windows updates,  good work

I use either media monkey 3 or j river (media monkey3 is still in a public alpha stage but mostly works ok, some odd noises, which is why i use jriver too, it works seamlessly for me), then run them thru my stereo

Things like evernote an organizer pop peeper to check for mail and farr and a clipboard all start at startup and are used just as required, things I need, but as for the ones i actually start from choice,
Firefox is by far the most used
Word 2003
Idea Mason and Roughdraft (equal now)

General Software Discussion / Re: XP or Vista user — take the poll!

Ahhh mikiem, i think thats where the web based apps will come crashing down, not everyone has access to the internet, those that do an awful lot still have only access to a really slow connection and then of course there is the security of your data, do you want the governement of (insert country) trolling through whatever you write or do?  Im put off internet based apps just by the length of time it takes to logon to google mail or hotmail, a lot of time im on dialup and it can take what seems an age, but is only a minute or so to load.  When i do have access to broadband, its via satellite and its not cheap, and the download amount is restricted.

Thems my thoughts, today

there is really no practical way to stop a professional thief, i think that these sort of things are good for the casual / opportunistic thief and should be seen in that light.

Before the guy's site disappeared he had a note saying he was giving it away, he wasn't interested, at that time anyway in developing it for word2007 so he shut the lot, so all you can get now is the free version, since there is no way, that i know of anyway, to get a licence key, so dont get to like the pro features  ;)

General Software Discussion / Re: Is the Windows start menu dead?
« Last post by Grorgy on August 07, 2007, 04:52 PM »
a functional start menu seems to be the best way to ensure usability on public and semi public terminals, universities, internet cafes and so on.  If it isn't the start menu it needs to be something similar.  After all, we can all use a start menu, not everyone can, or wants to, use other methods for launching applications.

That's the really good thing about wb, if you get sick of something its only a click away to change it, and if you are using the computer a lot I like a bit of eye candy, makes the experience just that little more entertaining for me  :D
589
Well ak, it appears to be something to do with the windowblind im using, if i tell windowblinds to ignore it then it works ok, and I've had other programs not work, but none that have done this, this is new and exciting  ;D.  Anyway its no problem, the script does exactly what it says it will,  and its  only when you set it up that its seen anyway.
590
This is great.  Just one thing, on my computer the quit box, the t ends up on a different line, probably using different fonts or something, maybe if you ever up date it a bit more room in there, but its purely aesthetics and for a program you run once and forget its not very important.

Just an edit to add screenshot after all a pic says a 1000 words lol

I would hazard a guess that apart from Microsoft's desire to lock in a market the price partially reflects the income of the average Chinese, around US$1500, a year not a month, so its either sell it cheap or not sell it at all.  (of course PhD and Masters degree holders make about double that.)

Apart from that ad in alzip which keeps telling me its free for home users and flashing thru all the things, i think i could use it, but unless that is made to stay still at least i would only consider it as a last resort.
595
I got that message to, i thought about it for a bit and it seemed that all the programs listed had been installed or modified after windows search had been, i got rid of it anyway, no dramas at all.

I have the free versions of some of their products http://www.freeserif...ware.com/default.asp which is a few versions older, havent used them much but the price was right  ;)  they havent bombarded me with spam of any type either, maybe they dont think its worth the effort if you dont actually fork out some cash in the first place

I was told if you dont do any cleaning (of houses) for 5 yrs things get no worse, a worthwhile research project i think, wonder if this holds for computers?  ;D
