I checked the elements that loads with G+, i guess they're running flash+ajax on the page, that could be the reason they're slow.

These days apple fanbois are getting so much P$%%^d off at windows for nothing. They think making separate OS for tablet and desktop is wrong move. They're also taking shot at short boot time. I mean for what ? you left windows right ?  :D Sour grapes. Atleast windows tablet will support flash, multi-tasking and many other features that apple failed to do so. This shout goes to you Mr.chris pirilio for making pro-apple comments without realizing the expensive hoopla behind it.  :P

I made a request to Duckduckgo author for blacklisting such domains, read this discussion. I may even tweet to web spam team of google (matt cutts) on this issue. My argument is still the same - "ranking original author or leech sites". Till then- viva la insomnia.

It would be nice to find an alternative approach that wasn't so annoying to people but still achieved the goal of having some way to make people not choose the path of least resistance of not donating.
Humble Indie bundle is one good promotion theme that is running these days to raise the funds for developers. I don't know what will happen to this promotion method if it gets saturated.

Authors have agents. Rock stars have labels. Movie stars have guilds.
Why not indy software developers?
It is very rare to have honest middle man that leads to win-win situation. Take example of leecher sites - they're ripping off freeware authors by hosting their files on servers with the excuse of promotion. Another example, appsumo which is borderline scam when it comes to app marketing. They're playing all scarcity tricks and popular internet marketing punches to sell software and other publisher or developer niche content. Some of the books and apps featured in appsumo mails are overly priced and don't deserve the label of discount or limited time (classic scarcity). Fair to users ? No. Then there is a marketplace called codecanyon and their niche based envato marketplaces where royalty percentage is 30-65%. Is it fair to software producer ? No. But if you need money for your hardwork then you have to compromise on some levels. It's really hard to price content by keeping balance of market demand and developers hard work. So app market or stock marketplaces are not always rewarding and consistent cashflow to developers.

That aside there are some problems with paying for software. Some countries are not allowed to use paypal or other popular shopping carts. So people have no option than skipping paypal or amazon buttons. It's hard to target international crowd with your donationware software. There is also issue of users who don't pay attention to developer website when they use free software. Take case of mousers URL snooper software which is helpful for ripping off online radio streams or sport streams. How many users come back to DC to get key or even donate ? There are many alternatives of URL snooper which are packaged with OpenCandy like stuff. Those who are desperate to download videos and audio stream don't care about OC ads and sales pitches. They just download and forget about it. It's hard to get this type of crowd to pay or get them to donate. FARR and Screenshot captor are two programs that are used by patient users so they're likely to convert with donation or returning visitor. I'm sure mouser gets more return hits in analytics on these two softwares than URL snooper.

So my point is - if you want to get paid for the freeware then make it easy for users to donate(point already covered by mouser). Offer them more options (in terms of payment processors) to donate. Restrict software distribution to your own server and get a dedicated forum to address bugs and other issues of software.

NSFCM

Spoiler
Not suitable for conservative mind.

There are plenty of blasts still going on in my country. Death count is 10x times 911 event. Media is just giving too much attention to 911. It's not even worth attention as politicians are involved in it. Obama and other folks asking us to buy weapons from them or buy US security. Looks like iron-man plot to me. Create terrorist with religious delusion, disturb peaceful countries with the help of UN, create anti-terrorism mindset and sell them weapons. Keep things burning all the time and let the cashflow in. I do see very minor percentage of religious terrorism these days. All that is left now is either politically handled blasts or "politics+religious monopoly+natural resource manipulation"- motivation behind such stuff. People are dying almost everyday due to some form of terrorism. Life goes on.

In your case they're(Techsmith) targeting your keyword but redirecting to their own program, which in my opinion is fine as it's competitor strategy on SE. That is typical business tactic and hard to argue against. But if someone is using your keyword to redirect users to your software hosted on their servers then this is something different and deserves slap IMO.

+
e.g. Alternative Screenshot Captor download from an external server (availability not guaranteed by Softonic)
This bolded part is traffic leak and it's like discouraging users to go to developers website.

Quote from - http://screenshot-ca...oftonic.com/download

The program you want to download will be downloaded through the Softonic Downloader, making the download process much faster, showing a progress bar and ensuring the program is virus-free.

First, the Softonic Downloader will be downloaded, and through it you'll be able to download the main program. During the download process we show commercial offers, such as the Softonic Toolbar
.

I checked your software if it goes to download manager. For me it is not forcing me to download that installer. I hope others can check this process and confirm if i'm the only person not getting download manager due to geolocation or others are forced to download this download manager.

Mouser, one user reported that softonic is creating google adwords campaign for his software without notifying him and are forcing readers to download installer. So i linked to that thread on stackexchange as it was one case against softonic. As for softonic targeting adwords campaign and making subdomains for software to rank higher than original developer, that is easy to confirm.

I feel bad for the developer because softonic is creating google ads for the software name and diverting the traffic to their own site and in turn want users to download the installer. Traffic leak+ SEO blast. It's like writing billboard ad with name of "Microsoft" on every apple store and redirecting users to buy apple products through microsoft cart system, just because there is no distribution policy written by developer and they're not competing with these leeches.

After CNet downloader, we have a new brand in this market - softonic download manager. Forcing users to download installer.

What's wrong with blackberry ? Recent models - curve and storm seems to be fine compared to iphone. They're not tied to carrier anymore.  :tellme:

Developer's Corner / Big Brands and Public API
« Last post by mahesh2k on August 31, 2011, 09:10 AM »
Is it just me or most of you who fetch public API from big brands are fed of project dropping and in turn API? Yahoo is closing many developer network API's lately and Search monkey was the one which i used a lot and they shut down last year. Similarly Y!Boss seems to be merging with Bing, so there is no point in creating any app that fetches Y! Explorer data.

Same with google. They're also closing few projects.

Wave, Notebook, Google Labs and Google desktop search(no updates).

Is there any point in relying on these big brands for the data ? I have found that some other less popular brands are more consistent with their support with improvements in API and projects.

Thoughts ?

I've been thinking- I think there are a couple other people on DC who have extra games on Steam (I know I do)- maybe we should put together a giveaway (or contest) especially for Steam games?  Just a thought...

Cool idea. If anyone is interested in giving away "tower defense game" not discussed in any thread of DC, i'm interested. :D
