General Software Discussion / Re: What's your preferred File Manager
« Last post by Innuendo on December 11, 2013, 10:35 AM »
But Control+DC is default for Properties out of the box and it exhibits the same bug.

So it does...I just rarely have to look at properties of files in DOpus. When I start looking at the 'nitty gritty' stuff like that I'm prone to pop open a CLI window.

I posted on the DOpus Resource forum in Help & Support, which is their referred method.  Leo has confirmed the problem, so they're looking into it.

I'm sure it will get fixed then. Jonathan is a very competent programmer.

While I tend to agree, it's a matter of opinion/circumstance - if I have to install a filemanager on a relatives machine that doesn't entail spending money, then FreeCommander XE or A43 is the best  ;)

Yes, once you put the requirement of free on the table then the recommendations will change. FreeCommander XE is probably one of the most powerful free file managers available.

Of course they do...and with an extra pocket to keep your favorite lipstick!

i know i shouldn't have laughed, but i couldn't help myself.  :P

That's the reaction I went for...I wanted to put forth something ridiculous, but use marketing buzzwords to do it. Sadly, lots of things are advertised like this.

Is special anti-malware software just for women, actually necessary?

Anti-malware for men fix the problem and send you on your way.

Anti-mailware for women, however, explores the problem, discusses your feelings about how this problem affects you, and works with you towards a solution that will reaffirm your womanhood while letting you look stylish and fashion-forward while doing it.  8)

I fail to see how the Alt+DC thing is too much of a problem as it is user-created. It's not like it is a stock configuration item out of the box. Regardless, the author is very receptive towards bug reports. Has anyone reported this bug to Jonathan? If so, what was his response?

Dcwulf62, you're right. DOpus isn't cheap, but I bought it when it was on sale for Christmas one year from their German reseller who also included the USB and FTP Advanced options for free. The only other file manager that rivals it is Total Commander, but its rabid user base will not allow its author to modernize it for the times so I regretfully had to move on.

You can install the 32-bit version on an x64 system, but then you have all the directory navigation problems that come with using a 32-bit program on a 64-bit version of Windows.

And yes, the DOPus resource forum is amazing. Chances are whatever you want to ask already has been asked and can be found with a quick search. On the rare times it isn't already answered, Leo is quick with a reply.

I thought I read somewhere that if you wrap your cell phone in aluminum foil, it will keep trying to check for incoming calls and run its own battery down in a short time.
Or is that not so?

Cell phones are designed to reach out and find cell phone towers so they can maintain connections with the mobile network. If they can't make contact they'll keep trying to reach out over and over again until the battery dies. This is why if you are in a remote area with spotty cell phone service your battery will drain more quickly. In this aluminum foil scenario what you would want to do is turn on Airplane Mode before you wrapped your phone.

Did the Adobe breach disclose credit card information, too?  I hadn't heard that.

Even if the breach had not disclosed credit card information, if users use the same login credentials on other sites, these criminals could theoretically log into these other accounts and build up quite a dossier of information on the person making it very easy for identity theft. Picture a criminal using your vital information sending out credit card applications to the four winds. That would not be a mess anyone would want to clean up.

Cancellation
We'd hate to see you go, but if you cancel within the first 30 days starting from your contract date, we'll give you a full refund. Otherwise, you'll be billed 50% of your remaining contract obligation for the cancellation or removal of seats. If you ever need to cancel, just call Customer Support.

Oh, benevolent Adobe....you giveth with one hand and taketh away with the other.  ;D

I came into this thread to ask who in the world still uses CDs and then discovered the original post was from 2006.

Nothing to see here. Move along.

P.S. If anyone is reading this and does need something to fill this need, SureThing is still around and they are probably the best in this area of software.

Just because one is a programming genius does not make one adept at business/marketing. Even a college degree in programming is no guarantee. Some colleges make business and marketing classes part of the curriculum, but a lot do not.

Alt+DC on a file and the Properties dialog opens immediately.

Just tried this on my Directory Opus x64 configuration and when I alt+DC on any file it just opens. No properties dialog at all. Checking the pull-down menu and I see Properties does not have any shortcut (keyboard or mouse) assigned to it.

My first question is are you two using a DOpus configuration that you imported from a previous version or did you start fresh with a new configuration when you upgraded to v10?

Given your other post today about pwning, I don't think I'd touch this offer with a ten foot pole. If this were for a one-time purchase, Adobe could use one's credit card information for the purchase and then discard everything but the last four digits to display for your records. With this perpetual subscription, though, that means Adobe will have to keep your full credit card details on file so they can make that charge to your card every month.

Given Adobe's past track record, they've never been one to react and correct their mistakes in a lightning quick manner.

But don't mind me. I'm one of those old curmudgeons who looks upon cloud computing with great disdain. The potential is there, but it's still too new and companies are pouring all of their resources into trying to find ways towards the perpetual billing of customers rather than concentrating on security and the securing of the data they are so eager to store.

Ah, that's where they demonstrate their genius.  They get us guys to underestimate them.  Pretty soon they own your car and are gassing it up using your credit card.   :P

Haha...I don't know about that, Miles. Seems they are cranking out a dumber version of gold diggers these days. Don't worry about them not being able to buy anything to eat, though. Seems they are cranking out a dumber version of gold diggees, too.  ;)

First, some would argue that with Adobe's strange policies, weird non-standard UIs, and exorbitant pricing that Adobe pwned their customers long before any hackers came along.

Second, while the steps you outlined are a good start, they are unfortunately just the start of the battle. You are going to want to contact the three credit card reporting agencies (Experian, TransUnion, and EquiFax) to flag your credit reports. You're then going to want to contact your bank(s) and all of your credit card issuers so they can flag your accounts there as well. If you're extra cautious/paranoid you may want to consider subscribing to one of the many credit monitoring/identity protection services that will help you detect any impending fraud as quickly as possible. There may be other things you will want to do as time goes on to tweak the process, but getting those flags in place are the first line of defense towards protecting your identity, your credit rating, and your bank account.

When a security breach like this happens, it's rarely told what the gap of time is between when the incident occurred and when it was detected & reported. Who knows how much time the hackers had to sift through that data and start using it before the whistle was blown on them?

I used to work for one of the largest credit card processors in the world. If you knew what I knew about credit cards you'd never use one again.  ;D

Now I know why you're going back to school.  You'll learn more from the coeds than the professors I'm sure.  ;)

I must be getting old. The young coeds are attractive enough, to be sure. Unfortunately, when most of them speak it's apparent they don't have a brain in their heads and they quickly become less interesting.

If I can get some institution to sponsor me(or find some lucrative work) I might just go myself.

I completely understand this viewpoint. It was by blind luck I stumbled into a situation where I was able to take advantage of a free ride to college. I was shocked that others who were presented with the same offer turned it down.

You should see what the college girls are not wearing in Miami!!  Aiyyyy.  :)

Uninhibited college girls with access to warm weather, sunny beaches, and generous amounts of alcohol...I'm sure the amount of interesting combinations is truly endless.

I was using a Dell Zino with Win7 and my WHS for storage across my homes ethernet.  Now setting up a jailbroken Apple TV2 and XBMC to stream media from my WHS.
It is quite full featured for such a small box, instant on doesn't hurt either.

The problem with an Apple TV2, at least a stock one anyway, is that it isn't capable of 1080p.

After a few years hiatus using Mac OS X, I've just come back to Windows (alongside the Mac still though) and it's funny, I was in a total panic to install AV and Windows Updates before anything terrible happened.

Fortunately, the rush to install patches & updates before drive-by malware infects your Windows install has been a thing of the past since Windows XP SP2. A lot of things have changed for the better in the Windows world during your hiatus (and some things for the worse...and some even no change at all).

I think overall you'll enjoy the direction Windows has gone & the direction in which it is going.

During a [somewhat drunken] discussion last night, the topic of synchronization software reared its head and hissed at us.

I've got nothing to add, but I do wonder what it's like getting inebriated with friends & then have a rousing debate about syncing our stuff. :D
