General Software Discussion / Re: Product Key Finder (Excellent & Free)
« Last post by J-Mac on October 28, 2011, 12:41 AM »
Wow! Haven't seen Magic Jellybeab in a long time - didn't know it was still around!

I use SIW and it has a product key finder built in, though it doesn’t find a lot of keys, like most of these products. But it does find the Windows and Office keys along with a handful of others on my box.

Thanks!

Living Room / Re: What the heck has happened to Google search?
« Last post by J-Mac on October 25, 2011, 10:05 AM »
I ran into this in Google last week and had a fit. Double quotes cannot replace what the plus sign did; it can give you exact phrases but you could use the plus sign to ensure Google included a word that they were aritrarily tossing out for results. The reason? They are coming out with searches specifically for Google+ and the plus sign in the search query will automatically make it a G+ search only. Truly sucks!

Another wonderful change to their search page: The "cached" link will no longer appear with the results but will only be available in the "Instant Preview", so you'll have to hover your mouse over the preview icon, allow it to expand to the right of the results, and then find the "cached" link in there. Of course this is "for our own good", don’t you know...

BTW, I would love to use Duck Duck Goose - the concept sounds nice, but I don’t get nearly enough search results when I use it. Hell, I may be back to Yahoo soon for my searches.

Thanks!

What about Google cached versions?

You can get Google to take them down, but it ain't easy! I haven't tried but I know someone who did and by the time she was done you didn't want to be near her!

Hi Thomas!

Yes, I will try installing 8.3 normally (meaning to the C:\Program Files\ location) and see how it goes.  Then again.... I plan to get a new computer within the next month and hopefully that box won't have the same conflict present as my current computer. I might just wait until  I get the new computer to try installing 8.30 to Program Files.

Either way I will report back to you.

Thanks again!

I agree and didn't mean it that way, but it does seem like Lite-On has a history of fialing to recognize media after a time. Guess I'll try another brand.

I just hate to swap drives out again now cause I am going to be getting a new computer in the next month or so.

I have 2 Lite-On drives: a Reader and Writer. Replaced the Sony drives that came with this box. The Writer just stopped recognizing blank DVDs. It sees CDs just fine but insists there is no media when I have a blank DVD in it. Been a year and a half since I installed it, and the Sony did the same damn thing after more than two years. Maybe just a short life span?

Wow! Now I'm really jealous!

Verizon FiOS? We have them here but I have been reluctant to switch since they were such a horrible phone company for so many years here. (Landline, that is).

Thanks!

That is exactly what always happens to me when I try to capture a scrolling window in the browser - any browser. Notepad was the first time it didn't flash like that, though it messed up the numbers.

Thanks!

I still think that - other than the obvious re-ordered numbers problem from the Notepad experiment - my scrolling capture is related to my nVidia GeForce 8800GT card which has never played nice with anything, especially my Asus A8N32-SLI-Deluxe Mobo. I have had various graphics problems ever since I got this computer with that combo. (Although somehow Snagit has never had a problem with scrolling captures on this box. Weird!)

Thank you.

General Software Discussion / Re: Speech to Text Software?
« Last post by J-Mac on September 25, 2011, 11:50 PM »
Looks like they have relabeled what I called the "Preferred" edition and now call it "Premium".

IMO the Professional version was the only one that was worthwhile. Of course it appears that the price difference is still very large! (Though it is actually lower now than when I purchased DNS Pro 9).

Thank you.

Do I need the Pro version of DNS to transcribe files?

They have no trial versions available that I could find, which makes it very difficult to figure out.

Basically, yes. Standard does almost nothing; no commands, just basic transcription but no way to properly correct it. They used to have a "Preferred" edition but I don’t know if that is still offered. Preferred does have the ability to create command scripts but is somewhat limited. Global commands - which are the most useful and necessary for some tasks - is only available in the Pro edition, or at least that was the case through Version 10. I used the Standard edition of DNS 7, and then the Preferred edition of DNS 8. I finally purchased the Pro version of DNS 9 and got the most use out of that but not enough error-free usage to justify buying DNS 10.

wagglesoft - thank you for being so active here and answering questions... I have one, I've installed Wagglesoft but can't log-in! What to do?

Log-in coming in 3.03...  OK KIDDING!!   :)  :P

I do thank you also Waggle. I don’t know - I read the update features and first of all I thought it was a major upgrade. My bad.

Regarding the ribbon though, I still feel that is only a valid UI when standard menus become too overloaded with multitudes of sub-menus, as Office had become. But if standard menus are reasonable then the ribbon UI is completely superfluous. IMO it should only be added by necessity, not for "looks".

Thanks!

Not sure what your point is Curt. I understand what DMS will be but WaggleImage was supposed to be the one that manages your PDFs - you don’t think that a PDF/scanned document organizer should have had built-in PDF capabilities? Especially since the Ghost driver is free?

Or maybe I'm missing the point of your post?

Thanks!

My thoughts on the upgrade:

  • OCR is indeed nice, however since this is supposed to be in competition with Paperport and Fujitsu's ScanSnap document management software (per Wagglesoft rep on page 1 of this thread) I would have expected OCR to be a standard feature from the start!
  • Same goes for "PDF Support"; after all this is for managing scanned documents to PDF files, isn't it?
  • And Windows 7 support? Seems to a little past due also!

Then again, maybe I'm just being an overly nit-picky pain in the ass! (Some tell me that I CAN be like that....  every now and then...   :P  )  If so, I apologize for nothing at all!  (OK, maybe a little...)

Thanks!

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly....

The Good: Wagglesoft 3.0 was just released.

The Bad (?):  Doesn’t look like a whole lot of was added; biggest seems to be you can now export from WaggleImage...

The Ugly:  They added a "ribbon" interface, though why anyone would announce this as a feature is a mystery to me. Could be beneficial if WaggleImage had innumerable menu and sub-menu items like MS Office, but nothing but poor window-dressing for any programs that don’t. I would love to hear the reasoning behind a ribbon for this app.

Check your most recent Microsoft Update patches. Whenever I get weird unexpected behavior like this - especially with a Microsoft app - they seem to have figured into the problem.

OK. I guess I just have never heard the term used that way.

Thank you.

mouser,

Regarding the Splice feature: The name of the feature is a little confusing to me. The term "splice" usually means "to join two items together" in my experience. Yet the new "splice" feature in Screenshot Captor actually is a kind of cropping utility, isn't it? Or am I not fully understanding the feature. The version history describes the feature as "New "Splice" commands in SpecialFx menu -- allow you to splice out horizontal or vertical regions, like banners.  Good for removing ad regions in screenshots, etc."

Does the Splice feature do anything other than remove portions of an image?  (I am SO confused!!      :tellme:  )

Thank you.

General Software Discussion / Re: Directory Opus 10
« Last post by J-Mac on September 19, 2011, 01:33 PM »
It is one of my favorites also - but DOpus 10 is still a major pain, especially given all the time they had to get it ready. DOpus 10 was released more than four years after DOpus 9, yet it has not much in the way of new features; mostly improvements in its existing features.

Now I actually appreciate the fact that the last major upgrade, DO9, was good for four years with plenty of great and useful "minor" updates over those years. I read people's complaints about the cost of DOpus all the time but four years?!?! It is worth every cent I have ever spent on it! And though I also have lifetime licenses for both Total Commander and XYPlorer, DOpus is light years ahead of them IMO (and I do realize my opinion is mine alone and that many may disagree with me on that point). I use TC and XY at times for special tasks, but DOpus is a true Windows Explorer replacement for me.

However the number of bugs in DOpus 10 - and I am speaking of more than just my own recent rants here - seems disproportionate with the time they had to get this version ready. I don’t know, maybe the timing of Windows 7 messed them up. All I know is that this version is still giving me fits and taking up hours on some days to try and get something done, and I purchased and installed the DO10 upgrade on 1-May-2011! That's almost five months and for the most part the advice I get is "try installing the newest beta and see if that helps". Grrr...

Thanks for listening!

Well, I actually felt kinda good about this until I saw Stephen's... Now I'm just jealous!!

Please don't be...

You get very spoiled with a 100meg connection, and when it isn't working at full speed, and you find yourself on anything below 50-70, you get VERY annoyed, and people just don't understand how, or why your frustrated with downloading at ONLY 6500kb/s via HTTP.  :-\   8)

Oh, thank you - I feel so much better now.   ;)

Windows 7 Home Premium. I understand that a lot of little glitches could very well be related to people's individual systems, and Lord knows that the combo of this Asus MoBo and nVidia Graphics card has given me fits the whole time I have owned this box. However I would not expect DOpus 10 to behave this much differently than DOpus 9 did on this same exact box. "All things being equal..." does apply here; and DOpus 10 definitely takes longer and uses a lot more of my machine's resources than DOpus 9 ever did on the same computer, with the same software and tweaks. They must have changed something that is causing it to behave poorly here.

Thanks!
