Site/Forum Features / NANY 2011 :: A New Concept -- Have your say!
« Last post by Perry Mowbray on April 14, 2010, 09:50 AM »
NANY 2011 :: A New Concept

NANY has always had two purposes:
  • To encourage anyone who is interested in coding to create something new, for the pure fun of it.
  • To provide motivation and a platform for coders who want to work hard to create a useful new application for others to use, and help them spread the word about it.

It's not always easy to organize NANY in a way that makes sense for both of these purposes -- so in 2011 we are planning to try something new.  In addition to the existing NANY set-up we are going to create a new category for Entrants who want to submit a more significant application, which will have a more rigorous set of guidelines for successful entries.  We are calling this category First Class entries.

We still strongly encourage everyone who is interested in creating something new for the New Year to participate, whether serious or fun, big or small, application or game, novice or professional programmer.  But those who want some motivation and encouragement to create something really special, with wide appeal and extra promotion, are encouraged to pledge a NANY First Class entry.

NANY entries that qualify as First Class entries will be featured more prominently in our wrap-ups and in our presentations to other sites as they'll have the widest appeal, ease of use and clarity of documentation.  In other words, the "First Class" applications will be the applications that we feel most comfortable recommending to people who have never heard about DonationCoder.com, and which we think are ready for wide promotion to the general public.

While anyone can submit a NANY entry, the "First Class" entries will also require:
  • Clear instructions for installation and use (help files or readme's etc.)
  • Earlier pledging of the author's desire to participate.
  • Initial Submission well before the deadline so that we can help test and provide feedback.
  • Most of all, a commitment from the author to incorporating feedback and suggestions from testers prior to the deadline.
  • More time spent by the author on polishing the application so that it is suitable for a general audience.
  • Will almost always be more substantial applications that require more development time, and will exceed the normal scope of a Coding Snack.

It is our intention to keep the same spirit of NANY that we have always:
  • A fun and rewarding event for everyone involved.
  • Encouragement to everyone who wants to participate to participate, regardless of coding experience.
  • Trying not to have winners and losers.
  • All entrants that Pledge and Submit by the due dates "winning" a NANY prize.

This new concept has been the focus of much, and at times, intense discussion.  We think/hope we've struck a good balance between the original NANY spirit and the need for improvement.  But NANY is all about you, the DC members: This is your opportunity to give us your feedback on the new ideas and influence its implementation...

I installed by stopping FARR and then replacing the TimeZone folder under FARR\plugins.
When I restarted FARR, TimeZone initialized fine but 'tz' showed me my local time for all slots.
One manual TZ ReDownload fixed that (I have 'download each launch' turned off).
-cranioscopical (April 10, 2010, 07:38 AM)

Would that have been using tz before the download/extraction had completed? You'd see the TimeZone icon in the system tray...
578
It's actually pretty nifty to watch it (in the tray) checking your favourites and updating automatically (the icon changes).

In testing I was manually editing the data file, but I'd like to hear from anyone who has had it do it's thing in the wild (so to speak)  :D

OK, here are the three results for FARR:
I can see two has a relative path and the other absolute, but there is only one installation on my HD. I've just searched for FindAndRunRobot.dcupdate and there's one in Program Files\DcUpdater\Installables\FindAndRunRobot.dcupdate, but that's not one of the paths...

And what's now really weird is that the display is back to just one  :-\ :-\ :-\

...but it's back to three after a restart

DcUpdater / Issues with 1.26.01
« Last post by Perry Mowbray on April 09, 2010, 04:47 AM »
A couple of things that I hope I can get sorted -- when updating the last TimeZone I ran into these issues:

1. Double Clicking on the dcUpdater file could not install
Screenshot - 9_04_2010 , 7_04_00 PM.png
Note the missing "Installation To:" even though the following was set in the dcUpdater file:
Code: Text [Select]
  1. <InstallDirectory>Plugins</InstallDirectory>
  2.   <BaseDirectory>Find and Run Robot</BaseDirectory>

2. Running dcUpdater from Start Menu produces a lot of duplicate files

Screenshot - 9_04_2010 , 7_06_06 PM.png
I've mentioned this before, but not sure if I'm doing something not entirely right?

3. Signalling FARR
Code: Text [Select]
  1. <SignalForUpdate>FindAndRunRobot.exe</SignalForUpdate>

I thought the above would signal FARR to reload the plugin? I'm (almost) sure that didn't happen. It's meant to reload and run through the Init isn't it??

Anyway... I was hoping to cure my confusion...

Updated TimeZone to 1.4.0!

Included in this update:
  • Favourite Checking: Option for TimeZone to check your Favourites for time changes on FARR launch. If a discrepancy is found (probably due to DST), the data file will be downloaded.
    • An option also exists to limit Favourite checking to certain months (i.e. DST change months).
  • Backup of Settings: The Settings ini will be backed up (1 version) on each save (just in case).
  • Fixed bug: TempFile not deleted
  • FARRTimeZone.exe updated to 2.1.0:
    • Settings rollover messages fixed & added to INI files (all those using language files I'd appreciate you checking the Google translations  :-[ and emailing them to me -- thanks)
    • General functional improvements:  Hopefully future proofed further changes at TimeAndDate.com  ;)
    • Improved error feedback during download

Appreciate feedback. I've noticed that dcUpdater doesn't seem to be playing the same game with FARR, previously I'd thought that when the plugin was updated that FARR reloaded it again but when I just ran through that process here it didn't seem to and I had to do it manually.  :-\
583

If I choose 'City Name', instead of a list of the cities with tjeir relative time zones I get a list showing the day and the time of my time zone for every favorite I added to the list, i.e.

Thanks, I'll PM you instructions...
584
Got new version, but my times are still wrong!  UK should be 1 hour behind but TZ still says 2...

 :)

You may need to do a manual Download as the new version keeps previous data and unless your timezone has moved in or out of DST it doesn't know what you're looking at...
585
My apologies everyone... the problem was that TimeAndDate.com changed the way they constructed their web pages, not a lot but enough to break my RegEx.

I've uploaded a fix and I'll have a look at fixing it so if they change back again it wont break again. Your settings should still be ok as I don't overwrite them  ;)

New version in the first post of this thread and on my site if dcUpdater hasn't downloaded the new version for you..

Please let me know if that fixes it for you too...
586
Maybe they changed something at timeanddate.com?

That they have, so I'll make the changes... sorry for the problems  :-[.

Your settings should be fine; well I hope they are... they're contained in the timezone.ini file. You can make a backup copy of this file if you like and edit it by hand if necessary (well, copy and paste probably)...

Michael Connelley's penultimate effort, "The Scarecrow" (very good),

We enjoyed The Scarecrow too; though it got very mixed (almost polarized) reviews on GoodReads.
588
I'm no expert and am pretty easily pleased; but keeping that in mind...

AxCrypt, that I do use on occasions, will encrypt a whole directory or drive of files in one go. Though if you add files they won't be encripted.

GizmosTSA.png has, what I'd hope is, some recommendations. They mention some of those previously mentioned and some others and focus on the need to install and how to work around that.

It seems the first question to ask is how critical is the stuff on the drive and how serious encryption do I need? Hence F0dder's:
rjbull: the short answer is "if you want it done securely, then no".

Living Room / Re: Building a home server. Please help, DC!

I've run into a more pressing need right now, please help me out with a few questions:

I need to back up my information to something off-site.  Now, instead of paying for a service, I'd like to set up something in either my parent's house or my sister's house.  What's the easiest way to do this?  Can I just buy a NAS and connect it to their router?  How do I access and administer the NAS from my house?  Through ftp?  Or through http?  Or something different?  I just want to sync the files from my hard drive to that one.

I have a Synology NAS, which is able to use various services (I use DYNDNS.org) to keep a (free) hostname registered to the (probably variable) IP address; and from there you can set up ftp and/or http etc.

You should be able to ftp straight to it, although I have not attempted to do that from an external site.

General Software Discussion / Re: Best jukebox that is NOT iTunes?

I've been using Jaangle for some time now and am pretty happy. It's just a player / organizer, so no burning or ripping... but it does the other things well and the dev is quite responsive and accommodating to requests.

Just noticed that Jaangle got top billing at Gizmo:

My motto on FB is - DON'T JOIN ANY GROUPS!

Quite apart from groups are just about meaningless... there are too many and they've become like badges (cheap badges).

The PageDown & Up feature is pretty neat:

What are the chances of being able to page down | up in the normal window without going to the list window?

and/or: will the list window ever become htmlified?
593
I'm very much looking forward to getting to know you all and working with you.

glad you finally made it here...

There's lots of interesting stuff over in the Programming School that you can get your teeth into.

OK... I'm happy again...
596
So you couldn't use html objects in the same way that I did?
597
Oh, that's interesting.

That means that every software has to stitch the different graphics together to put onto this "one" desktop?

I was using software that the graphics card supplied to put two different graphics on my two monitors, but it conflicted with something else so I ended up using html desktop item to display the required graphic over the top of the base desktop of the appropriate monitor. Not so nifty, but at least it works without other hassles.

I love Ubiquity (and the name too), it was like FARR in my browser. I obviously haven't been following closely enough as I had no idea it'd died  :(

in dcUpdater?

I thought the dcupdater file had control of where to unpack??

I've been using PSPad for ages now, at home, at work, for everything. And although I keep an eye out I think I'm just used to it now  ;)  It's comfortable

and that's the main thing really: all the good editors will do a good job. The best one for you is the one that feels most comfortable to you. If you've narrowed it down to two, why not install them both and use them both. You'll know which one to uninstall in due time.
