Living Room / Re: Short Rant Against Users of Free Web Apps
« Last post by Josh on January 05, 2012, 10:43 AM »
Without reading the whole article, the first sentence sums it up for me. I came to this realization years ago with regards to free software. I really do not think it is a sustainable business model. I've watched many products go from free to shareware and the user base instantly turn, despite the various ways developers have attempted to calm their userbase before, during and after the transition. It all comes down to unwillingness to pay. It all ties into what I once titled the Entitled Generation. Most users fail to realize just how much work goes into developing software and, as such, they will never come to terms with why it is a good idea to support products they use and enjoy.

Does anyone know of a tool which allows this? The alternative I am looking for is a GUI based Google Contacts editor?

Any ideas?

General Software Discussion / DKIM for Thunderbird?
« Last post by Josh on December 30, 2011, 04:59 PM »
Does anyone know of a DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail) verifier for thunderbird? After moving my domains away from GoDaddy, and as I complete the process of migrating my email away from them to Google Apps for Domains, I implemented DKIM as provided by Google and wanted to see if there was any sort of extension which could verify these records from mail I receive.

Any ideas?

General Software Discussion / Opera: The web browser I have been dying to love
« Last post by Josh on December 28, 2011, 07:28 PM »
OK, first, a little background. I have been toying with browsers, as have many of the users here, for many years. I owned a license to the Opera web browser back when it was payware and back before tabbed browsing existed outside of opera/netcaptor.

For some time, I have been dying to make opera my primary web browser. It works well, it has a lot of customizability (for certain aspects), and even recently has garnered extension support and supports roboform/lastpass.

With that said, I have been unable to switch for a number of reasons. First, and foremost, is the lack of usability in the extension system. Extensions are there, and this is a good thing, but I feel that it was done in a very poor manner. Most of the extensions ported to opera lack the full functionality in competing browsers.

Auto-complete is an area that I have always felt opera has been lacking in. Yes, you have the ability to use the notes fields for auto-complete, but that is not a substitute for real auto-complete which remembers text typed into fields with various labels. There are times where auto-complete has saved me a lot of time to find some piece of off the wall information I filled in some time ago, like an old account number I thought I would never need again.

Website support is an issue that is two-hatted. Yes, there are some sites which outright block opera, and then there are some which render differently in opera. However, as an end user, where does the fix action lie? Yes, it would be nice if every developer coded to standards, but alas, I doubt we will see this happen any time soon. New standards are released quite often and to keep abreast of them takes time. That said, I feel that if other browsers can render content in a manner which allows websites to function, why shouldn't opera? As an end-user, I should not have to worry about whether or not the website is to blame or the browser is. It should, to take a phrase from Apple, "Just work".

All that said, I feel that opera has a lot of strengths. It is very quick and offers a lot of good functionality, all packaged into a single executable. But, alas, it is the browser that has remained one I have been dying to love, but simply can't due to many nagging little issues (on top of what I listed above, those are just the key ones which crop up very often).

I would be interested to hear everyone's opinions on this piece of software. Thoughts? Comments? Concerns? Existential Quandaries?

Clipboard Help+Spell / CH+S on Ghacks
« Last post by Josh on December 28, 2011, 06:14 PM »
Source

There is definitely no shortage of third party clipboard managers for the Windows operating system. One of the reasons for this is the limited nature of the default system clipboard feature which can only store one item at a time. This means a lot of juggling back and forth if you need to copy multiple items from one application to another. The Windows Clipboard does not support persistent clipboard items as well.

Clipboard Help+Spell is a Donation Coder application. This means that it is free for personal use and well designed. The program might intimidate inexperienced users as it offers a wealth of features and options.

The basics however remain the same. Windows users can still use the keyboard shortcuts Ctrl-c and Ctrl-v, or the right-click menu items, to copy and paste items to the clipboard. Clipboard Help+Spell remembers all items that get copied to the Clipboard, unlike the Windows Clipboard which flushes out the old entry once a new is stored.

The new shortcut Ctrl-Alt-q displays a selection menu to paste a previous clipboard entry into the current application.

Best E-mail Client / Re: E-mail client recommendations
« Last post by Josh on December 28, 2011, 05:47 PM »
I actually enjoy outlook but it has one thing missing that is a must for me. Folder layouts, when using imap, should remain expanded between software restarts. Right now, I have to expand every folder I usually have open every time I start outlook. If it weren't for that, I would gladly move to it because, let's face it, nothing beats Outlook in terms of speed and functionality.

Best E-mail Client / Re: E-mail client recommendations
« Last post by Josh on December 28, 2011, 05:21 PM »
I have a rather bad taste for webmail interfaces. I often get told to just use gmail. Personally, and no this has nothing to do with Google as a company, I do not like gmail or the way it handles things. The way folders are handled, as tags, really bothers me and their imap implementation is sub-standard.

Mulberry would be nice if it were still in development. Pegasus is one I am trying out now. As much as I hate to say it, thunderbird is probably my best option at this point. I would like to find something else to migrate from that feels more complete and does not feel as "clunky" as t-bird. I still cannot download an attachment from thunderbird without it being corrupted (downloaded attachments are fine from webmail).

I will try each recommendation from this thread. I am very actively seeking something to move me away from t-bird and the mozilla cludge that I have suffered with for so long.

I have to ask, but what are some decent email clients available right now? I have been using thunderbird for years but have always felt something was missing. The Bat is stuck in the 20th century and feels unfinished in many ways. What does everyone recommend? Perhaps a shoot-out of current email clients would make for a great follow-up to this email client round-up?

I much prefer FlashFXP over WS_FTP. I've used, and continue to use both, on a daily basis and FlashFXP is head and shoulders above WS_FTP in terms of usefulness.

General Software Discussion / Re: Fileforum.Betanews alternative
« Last post by Josh on December 21, 2011, 12:42 PM »
They really have turned into an advertisement delivery engine vice a real content site. Most of the "reviews" of products appear to be from paying advertisers, not that they are this is just my opinion. They are posting reviews to products which go against the primary audience of the site. Example, they recently posted a review of a "registry optimizer", which any tech worth his salt knows causes far more issues than it helps.

If you find any alternatives, please let me know.

Heck, I can get the FULL version of adobe acrobat for less than the cost of this "deal".

Not sure were from - the list price of Adobe Acrobat is $450 - which in itself is pretty ridiculous for what it does.

There are many discounted versions around the web. If you are a student, you can get the full version of Acrobat Pro Extended for $119, Pro for $99.

If there are any students out there, check out journeyed.com or the adobe educational site.

I am with tomos on this one. I have to question why there is an individual app for each and every single feature. This seems like nothing more than an attempt to exploit money from people. Heck, I can get the FULL version of adobe acrobat for less than the cost of this "deal".

I've been looking for something similar. Unforunately, the only service which comes close to that, and actually surpasses it in terms of number of programs monitored, is the CNET TechTracker.

The steam servers were being hammered yesterday. They have finally picked up the load and are processing normally. That said, I have found some very good deals on there!

If anyone sees a good 4 pack, let me know. I am almost always up for a 4 pack.

Living Room / Re: Flood of server hammering after sending out an email. Suspicious?
« Last post by Josh on December 18, 2011, 07:00 PM »
Is this FTP? If so, it is normal. There are thousands of probes daily on just about any service you can setup. My home FTP server gets hit daily by about 20-30 random attempts to login. I suggest securing access by locking down the max number of attempts per 30-60 seconds, max # of accesses/sessions per ip, etc.

You have missed the point you don't play them - you collect them (like a stamp collection) ;-)

Then you stay up all night, lose your job and have a crap Christmas.

Personally my Christmas is always crap - all I want is a big bag of humbugs and not once in 53 years has anyone actually given me a bag.

Merry Christmas!

General Software Discussion / Re: AdBlock Plus To Not Block All Ads
« Last post by Josh on December 13, 2011, 11:42 AM »
I am with CWuestefeld. I already allow sites that are not abnoxious with their ads. Betanews is an example of a site which takes advertising overboard with their constant flash based ads which take over the page until you close them. I have no issues with google ads or basic static images. But anything animated that detracts my attention from the page content is over the line.

I support ABP in this initiative. I want the internet to remain free and prevent a world where you have to subscribe to multiple websites to get INFORMATION.
