General Software Discussion / Re: Calendar Math, which language to use?
« Last post by housetier on December 25, 2008, 07:02 AM »
@ housetier, you might want to know that there is a problem with the coding of your pages  versus the translating service you are using. You are using ISO 8859-1, but the service is using UTF-8, which means that I can never see both parts properly.

I didn't know we had a translation service... but I'll forward it to our webmasters. thanks.

Thanks for pointing out izeit, curt. It might be just the thing I have been looking for to use for my club; atm we use google calendar and old software from the 90s which are aggregated into yet another static calendar. Very complicated very messy.

Living Room / Official DC meet-up in Berlin, Germany: January 3rd @ c-base
« Last post by housetier on December 24, 2008, 06:14 PM »
Hello zere, my fellow Germans!

I thought we could have an official get-together of the German Donationcoder faction as well. I know I am late to the game, but let's try this anyway. :)

I would love to get to know the members of this great community. And at the same time I want to show off the club I do voluntary work for.

For several reasons I decided to have this take place in Berlin, our poor but sexy Capital. That means, some of the German user won't be able to make it. But they can have their regional get-together as well!

So how about we all meet on January 3rd, in the club c-base in Berlin-Mitte; about 3pm-ish?

Moin!

Living Room / Ecofont - a free font that saves ink
« Last post by housetier on December 24, 2008, 06:46 AM »
Dutch webdesign group SPRANQ have created Ecofont, a font that supposedly saves up to 20% of ink when used for printing. Even if it were less savings, I really like the idea!

The font is free (based on GPL'd Bitstream Vera), download it from their page.

I didn't feel like cropping their logo, so no linky picture this time

General Software Discussion / 2008 - wins, failures, and... of Open Source
« Last post by housetier on December 24, 2008, 06:25 AM »
I didn't want to just copy the original title, hence this lame version

winfailmeh.gif

This article does not uncover surprising fact, but is a nice short summary. Naturally it leaves out things that are superimportant to others, but oh well.

With 2008 coming to an end, heise online UK picks what was full of win, who was waiting for the failboat, and who just made us go meh. So in no particular order, here are the Wins, the Fails and the Mehs of Open Source from 2008.

Mentioned are for example: SCO, Debian (twice), and GPL.

Some of the events I have been following since the very beginning (SCO), some I read past when they appeared in my feed reader, and others didn't and still don't interest me.

And with regard to the problems of the Debian community I think we at Donationcoder are doing a terrific job at keeping modest, friendly, helpful and still productive. It is not easy for a huge community as ours to be as stable as we are. Sometimes I think it's a miracle; at least we very unique. We should be proud of what we have accomplished thus far!   :-* :D  :greenclp:

I wonder if the concept could be expanded: let people finish projects or meet their goals instead of having them "do work".

I wonder: are there any other DC users from Berlin, Germany? I know hadez will be in Berlin on December 31st (and before that and after that too), so we could make a small "DC German Faction" gettogether. I know just the place to meet: c-base.

OK You Germans and Berliners: speak up and lets have a blast! :D

Edit: spelling and dates, and I even went over it twice before I originally submitted it

usb-hub.jpg

I am very satisfied with my Networx USB Hub. Networx seems to be an Apple-related brand, but USB is still USB and this device has worked flawlessly in numerous setups: old laptops, new laptops, macbooks, eMacs, imacs, UBS 2.0 and 1.1, external hard disk, card readers, mobile phones, cameras, printers...

It's relatively tiny considering it has four USB ports, one "incoming" mini-USB socket and the power socket as well. You can use it without its external power supply if the devices are not so demanding.

yes indeed, TOR can give one a false sense of security.

Living Room / Re: Anonymous I-net surfing ?
« Last post by housetier on December 14, 2008, 09:28 AM »
The question is: is there a reason to NOT surf anonymously? It is not "do I have something to hide" but "do I want EVERYONE to see it"?

However, anonymity is but one part of security. Using TOR you can cover your tracks a little better. But you also want to make sure to use https when submitting sensitive information; and always ask: "do they really really need this information"?

It were nice if we had secure communications (no sniffing agents in the middle) and plausible deniability (no officer, it wasn't me).

What we do have is a little more secure ways of communication (by encryption) but no plausible deniability.

However all this does not help, when the site we use is operated by less nice people. And we do not have a usable way of checking their credibility, their "reputation": certificates can be and are forged, DNS is poisoned.

All I can say is: be careful whom you are dealing with.

In German "Trau, schau wem"

If you want to use javascript to pep up websites, do consider using jquery. It will make your life a lot easier :-)

I guess solid knowledge of javascript can also come handy when developing XUL applications or extensions.

maybe it has an option for delayed capture? so you could start the capturing procedure, open your dropdown menus and only then the screen is captured.
