General Software Discussion / Re: Avast Installs Chrome
« Last post by mwb1100 on February 08, 2013, 03:15 PM »
So if you don't use a custom install, there's no option not to install it?  That's still not kosher, IMO.

That kind of thing seems to be becoming more common in installers today (not specifically for Chrome, but installing 'companion software').  However, I agree that it's not kosher. A software installer should install the software I'm installing, not other crap that really has nothing to do with the software I'm installing.

But to help avoid this kind of thing, I always choose a custom install even if I have no real intention of customizing the installation. Every now and again, it catches something like this.

Living Room / Re: Payphones - Thoughts?

Just yesterday a coworker introduced me to a me restaurant and I nearly bumped into a payphone walking out of it and thought, "hmm, haven't noticed one of those in a while".

And now there's a DC thread about them...

Does this apply to Linux and other open source software?

Microsoft is stopping development of some of their web development tools sets (Expression Studio, Expression Design, and Expression Web):

They are making Expression Design 4 and Expression Web 4 available for free now:

  - http://www.microsoft...etails.aspx?id=36180

Keep in mind these are end of life products; they will net be enhanced or officially supported.

I've never used them, so I have no opinion on whether or not they're worthwhile downloads.

Living Room / Re: Software & Sensors to Monitor Old Folks
« Last post by mwb1100 on January 30, 2013, 11:06 PM »
I think smart monitoring will be a big help for a lot of people. When my Dad's dementia was getting worse, he liked to get out of the apartment and wander.  My Mom had a hard time keeping an eye on him 24 hours a day - keep in mind that she needs to sleep, shower, go to the bathroom, etc., and Dad seemed to have a knack of talking his 'walks' during those moments.

At that time he really wasn't so bad off that he needed to be in a full care facility, but he was definitely not well enough to be wandering outside.  Actually, even when it became time to find him a full care facility, it was nearly impossible because he was deaf and mute and nearly everyone said that they were not equipped to deal with that (we fortunately did eventually find a place with a great staff run by a fantastic woman).

Anyway, at the time we looked for some sort of monitor system that would help and were unable to find a system that would meet our needs.  I'm sure things have progressed quite a bit since then; these systems will definitely be a big help.

Living Room / Re: Great Messages in Software
« Last post by mwb1100 on January 27, 2013, 09:46 PM »
Here's a "message" that I'm sure some programmer thought was quite clever and/or helpful.  Instead it drove people nuts trying to figure out what was going on when it happened (like me when it happened to my Dad's computer way back when):

During normal operation or in Safe mode, your computer may play "Fur Elise" or "It's a Small, Small World" seemingly at random. This is an indication sent to the PC speaker from the computer's BIOS that the CPU fan is failing or has failed, or that the power supply voltages have drifted out of tolerance. This is a design feature of a detection circuit and system BIOSes developed by Award/Unicore from 1997 on.

Although these symptoms may appear to be virus-like, they are the result of an electronic hardware monitoring component of the motherboard and BIOS. You may want to have your computer checked or serviced.

;D Maybe not safe for work

The Killer Biscuits is really funny except for the last sentence.  IMO ditzy is ditzy no matter the hair (dye) color or gender.   :)

Or maybe it's from the '50s when that concept was more widely accepted?

Living Room / Re: FBI ALERT SCAM - Malware or Virus ?
« Last post by mwb1100 on January 21, 2013, 01:33 PM »
I read in the last week (sorry no link) that Malwarebytes real-time protection doesnt actually have the best reputation.

My impression is that MBAM has a good reputation for dealing with trojans and spyware, but not viruses (it's not intended as an anti-virus). Now let me say that this is one of the problems I have with anti-malware software in general - I don't care whether malware is a trojan, a virus, spyware or something else; I don't even really know or want to know what the differences might be.

All I know is that there's stuff that I don't intend to install on my computer and that I don't want it to be able to 'force' or 'trick' itself onto my computer. What category that malware might fall under is of no concern to me. It's all just garbage that I don't want, and  I just want my antivirus/anti-malware/anti-spyware/whatever to prevent infection and clean up infections that happen.

And I want the anti-malware to do that without it making my system slow or unstable (and ideally to do this without bugging me with a lot of questions I can't answer anyway).

That may be a tall order, but that's what I want.

However... Malwarebytes Anti-Malware's Chameleon 'killed the process' and I haven't found any traces left behind.
I'm glad to hear that MBAM worked to clean this up for you.  I have MBAM so this gives me hope that it may actually help save my bacon someday and that the small amount I paid for the Pro version wasn't a waste.

General Software Discussion / Re: WinPatrol Plus or AnVir Task Manager?
« Last post by mwb1100 on January 20, 2013, 03:59 AM »
I might be blind or mindless at times, but I don't like software doing that whether or not there's a box I can uncheck to prevent it.  For some software that's "free" I might not be too angry depending on how intrusive or hidden the crapware is.

But it's completely unacceptable behavior for software that I'm paying for - even if I haven't paid yet because it's a trial.

AnVir installed 3 utilities all of which scan for various things (registry errors, PC performance, outdated drivers)

I used to use both as well, but then when I checked out an upgrade Anvir did something like that and I dropped it.

Living Room / Re: Java Update on Tuesday
« Last post by mwb1100 on January 18, 2013, 09:43 AM »
And then it finally clicked, this is the Developers Kit, which is the one that I, and most ordinary folks don't want or need.

On the 'developer download'  page there are download buttons for various things like the JDK, which is the developer kit, JavaFX (I don't know what this is - examples?), and other things.

You'll want the JRE download, which is just the Java runtime.

Living Room / Re: Java Update on Tuesday
« Last post by mwb1100 on January 16, 2013, 02:29 AM »
My understanding is that if you install the Java runtime (JRE) with the optional toolbar, any (or maybe just some) JRE automatic updates will include a pre-checked option to include the toolbar in the update - even if you turned off the toolbar option on the initial install. So you have to remember to deselect that thing each time.

But, if you go to the developer oriented download site:

    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html

and choose the JRE download there, you'll get a version that doesn't package the toolbar at all.

Are you taking into account the cost of money, since you spent all $20 up front instead of over a couple decades for the foil? Just think of all the interest that amortized $20 could have earned.

This is an awful lot of discussion over something pretty inconsequential  :P.

Yeah - my comment was intended as a poke in the ribs (I don't use smileys much, so I forgot to add one).

I am looking forward to the new, improve SUL, with the expectation that the combination of cloud with "complete control" will give me exactly what I want most in SUL - synchronization of knowlegebases.  I'm hopeful that this will come without being tied to one particular cloud.

However, I'm not getting too excited yet, since I think that Neville probably has a lot of work ahead so it might be a while in coming.

For the time being, I look at other KB solutions every now and again (especially if they indicate synchronization support), but keep coming back to SUL.

GOG is redoing the "End of the World" sale that they had on Dec 21 - there are a bunch of bundles at 75% off and nearly all of their games are 50% off if you decide not to go with a bundle.

If you like old, nostalgic games, it's a good time to buy.  I've been replaying Ultima Underworld the past few days, and I'm loving it (but my sleep cycle isn't).

All games on GOG are DRM free.

Thanks for suggestions. Tried both Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware. Finally decided to go for SuperAntiSpyware. It has a life-time license.

how to get the lifetime license, still avaliable?

Lifetime licenses for SuperAntiSpyware are apparently no longer available:

We currently do not offer new lifetime licenses; As of mid-2011, all new licenses are 1-year.
