...and the ones that don't really care about the "risks" involved in it...

What risks?

Just a teen's perspective...

Thanks! Having no kids of my own, I can really appreciate a teen's opinion.
Who wants to be an "eighties throwback", anyway? :P

"Risks" meaning the whole "child abuse" stuff that no one under 30 really cares about... Oprah had a show on it a while back and I watched (and laughed) at the first 15 minutes or so of it. It is just about privacy and the whole "Who You Talk To Is Not Always Who They Are" (WYTTINAWTA, the webcam opposite of WYSIWYG :P)

Yea I know... The 80s? DOS? Commodore 64? MAN! HOW OLD ARE YOU PEOPLE! ;D (just kidding... sort of... lol)

Developer's Corner / Re: Best way to sync programming projects?
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on August 28, 2008, 07:44 PM »
I would, but I lost my school's hidden wireless SSID, and no longer have access there. I am in the process of brute-forcing back in (I know the letters, and a couple of the special characters, so there isn't a lot of combinations - plus it is NOT secured), but for the time being, I am sealed off from the outside world there.

(I had permission last year to be on the Wi-Fi, but a reformat caused the loss of the SSID that is (now) hidden).

I tried. I actually put down time to do it- no distractions, no games, nothing. I gave it a shot last night before bed, and had issues all around following several tutorials. Things that needed to be activated never showed an option to do so, preferences file code had errors, Apache wouldn't run correctly... a slew of bad happenings. I got all excited, and the process seemed logical, and then it was all downhill from there. :(

I'm still stuck now. I put a hard drive from a friend's wrecked Dell PC into the "server" and formatted it, and the root of the drive is read/writable over the network by Window's built in File Sharing, but I already had that on C...

I also gave an AHK script a try, just to kind of do it semi-automatically (copy to folder manually, AHK sees files, copies to server, other PC sees new files in server folder, copies to local disk, deletes from server), and that didn't work. I need to brush up on my AHK as is, but that gave me heck too. Refused to copy a file. ONE file. A plain text file! I can not win.

Is there anything user stupid out there? At this point Window's File Sharing is still the fastest and easiest method. That's a first for something in Windows being the easiest thing I can find (that works)...

(I said I was error prone :P)

I would assume that the whole "adult" thing is still attached to it for the older folks... every teenager I know (my entire high school) does at least IM/Text Messaging, and a lot of us do voice and video (I am getting a webcam soon). It is like there are two groups - the ones that take it inappropriately, and the ones that don't really care about the "risks" involved in it (and therefore do it all the time). (I would be the latter)

Just a teen's perspective...

I have mine on my laptop organized into a nice little top level + 4 folders system. Top level, Programs, Adobe Programs, Games, Maintenance. Like 30 icons total.

I found Windows Live FolderShare, but it is more or less a pain in the behind than it is worth. Plus, I can access my entire documents folder on ONE XP computer, but NOT the other? Wtf?

Subversion looks pretty simple, I am giving it a shot now. :)

Looks really interesting! Great timing too- I have a school presentation due next week, so I'll give this a go and see what it can do! :)

Alright, making some code improvements to FloorIt to make it more readable and maintainable later on. Also about to add some error-catching functions. I have learned a bit in my advanced programming class, and am putting it to work in this update.

You won't see anything changed, other than the new splash screen:

Figured it was kind of a funny slogan for it (it is also a song from the game "Need for Speed: Underground" for those of you that don't know) :P

(Song is here (rap/hip-hop): http://www.jamglue.c...Pablo-Need-for-Speed)

Expect an update in a week!

Developer's Corner / Best way to sync programming projects?
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on August 26, 2008, 09:08 PM »
A bit of a convoluted and somewhat idiotic system I have - and I need help! ;D

I am looking for a simple, REVERSIBLE (I make a lot of mistakes, with almost a GB of VB project backups) tool or system or something to let me sync multiple projects across multiple computers both automatically and manually (and FAST when manually - I plan to do it as I run out the door to school, and my personal motto "milliseconds count", could not be more true in the mornings).

Alright, here is my setup:
  • I have a desktop running Vista with Visual Studio Professional. This computer gets most of my "main" projects (SnapSuite, along with many of my other programs found in the Announced Software section) and it is ESSENTIAL that the data on it does not get corrupted by an error-plauged copy on another computer (I am error prone, hence the huge backup cache).
  • I have a laptop running XP with Visual Studio Professional as well. This computer I take to school, and I sync THIS laptop with TWO school computers every day manually. Everything on this is usually homework, so I need it on my desktop to finalize, and then back on the laptop the next day.
  • I have a "server" running XP. It is not used for anything but RARE gaming, research on BOINC and being a file server. This computer is for backups and file transfers - used every day, but if something related to programming goes upside down on this one, it isn't a big deal. All backups need to go here.

I need the same files on all 3 computers to be synchronized, I need to be able to say "do not copy this project" (checkbox or something), and I need an automatic (speed doesn't matter) and a FAST manual mode. Scheduled would be nice, but not needed.

l don't know if there is such a program; if there is, shareware is fine (it is pretty specific needs that I have). If there isn't, maybe someone in the coding snacks area could make something? I don't have any cash on hand right now, but in a couple weeks I should, so if someone made something for this, I can donate credits to you.

I am working on a small personal tabbed web browser, the Opera Mini of SmartBrowse if you will. It looks like a dead project, due to several reasons- I won't go into detail as I'll confuse myself as well. Don't expect to see it at all.

I learned a bit about variables and plan to make a couple of improvements to all my programs with regard to variables (if you don't know what I am talking about, a variable is just a data chunk that can hold various types of information). Also, I may update and repair code on older programs (SS 08 for example) and release the code for others to fiddle with.

There are quite a few small, insignificant issues with the Calculator (nothing that affects normal usage, or abnormal usage for that matter) - mostly graphical things: it can be maximized (not wanted), it can be resized (not wanted), etc. Things that I merely forgot. I won't re-post updates here, but I will include them in future SS and GOS updates.

Anyways, nothing new yet. I'll keep you guys posted if I make something cool or get the time to go and update everything with better code or something. :)

Sounded cool at first, but I got discouraged due to others experiences. I am still looking for something like this myself for Windows (currently using Vista/XP Desktop Manager, I think that's the name...). I don't want to boot to Ubuntu just to have my 256 desktops (I normally use 25, but Ubuntu supports up to 256, and I tried it out of curiosity - interesting, but you can't see anything on an individual desktop :P).
592
I like the new options dialog, but the lag to open it (I had a total computer freeze for about 3 seconds) and the modal form is kind of a takeaway. Have yet to tinker with any of the actual options, but it looks like a tweakers dream.

One other problem: I can not drag the Internet off the start menu onto the dock. It just won't take it. The drag/shortcut cursor appears, but nothing happens when I release it (on the circle, or the Orb).

Other than that, I am impressed :)

EDIT: Also, almost no one will notice this, but with a Logitech G9 mouse, if you change the scroll mode from click to constant, and you start spinning the dock icons... lets just say, it has been spinning for over 2 minutes NOT as the active "window" so far. Not really a bug, and kind of cool IMO, but thought I would point it out. (Constant meaning, until it runs out of kinetic energy and slows to a halt - and its been 5 minutes now about 8 minutes total until it stopped!)

EDIT 2: Another thought: Combine the Show and Hide options in the tray menu (or hide one when it is not relevant).

Anyone that is into the Air may be a bit angered by this video, but I (and everyone I showed it to) found it amusing for a quick unplanned parody video (we are all PC people though). Just goes to show that because a computer has become outdated, new technology isn't always better. Especially when it lacks an optical drive and a reasonable price tag! ;) ;D

General Software Discussion / Re: Songbird
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on August 24, 2008, 08:52 PM »
Yea, I downloaded Songbird 0.7 to both my desktop and laptop, and it is surprisingly nicely laid out and functional. And there has never been a Stop button ;)

I don't use the music services or bookmarks, just music library browsing and playback. It works with my keyboard's media keys, though - something iTunes always had issues with.

I never watch RAM or CPU usage, but it runs on my laptops aged 1.6GHz + 512DDR2 without slowing it to a crawl (my ObjectDock AND RocketDock (I run both at the same time) are not affected), so it can't be THAT bad.

If your into combining programs, and like to listen to music while browsing the WWW, Songbird is worth a shot now more than ever.

If I am not doing something that I would define as work (yard/computer/schoolwork) I either program, or play games. I am a big fan of driving games (always have been) as well as FPS games. If I am bored of everything I have available to play (over 70GB of games) I usually end up deleting stuff from my PC to make room for another game.

The never ending cycle of data vs games. The winner: certainly not the hard drive! ;D
598
FYI, if you have a new version of .NET, you have all the previous versions as well. You don't need to keep an outdated program because it was designed to work with the latest version of it's framework. :)

OK, parents left to go look at furniture so I figured I would type up a little beginner tutorial. It isn't great but it should be simple enough to get someone with little/no experience up and excited.

(I used OpenOffice to type it up, so I don't know if it retained the images or not. Let me know if it didn't and I'll look into it)

I know Deozaan does work in Torque, not sure if he could help but I know that is what he makes his games in.

I haven't had time to work on any GM documentation, as school has started and stuff has gotten to be a hassle again. I'll see if I can't type up a quick first-run tutorial later today...
