General Software Discussion / Re: The MS Excel Clipboard
« Last post by tomos on September 04, 2012, 08:57 AM »
(Can CHS give me hotkeys for specific clips so that I can paste those specific clips without using my mouse or any UI? i.e. Just a set of hotkeys?)

The way I use CHS at the moment is with the favourites folder in a sub-menu of the popup list.
So for me I would have to press:
  • Ctrl+Alt+V [for popup - customised I think]
  • q [for the favourites menu]
  • [and the number of the clip on the favourites list]

you can move the favourites menu up to the main menu, then it would be just two steps.

If you add a new favourite, it will go to the top of the list (#1) - thus screwing up "pasting-without-thinking".**
Because of that I now use the option to move a pasted clip to the top of the list (i.e. sort by last use) - which means I do have to look at what I'm doing.

Best Dialog Extender / Re: set focus in "file name" control?
« Last post by tomos on September 03, 2012, 02:27 PM »
I have tried several and none of them do this. I have software for my scanner (HP PrecisionScan Pro) which worked fine under Windows XP. However, under Windows 7, the File Save dialog comes up with the focus set evidently nowhere.

have you tried running the problem software in XP compatibility mode?

You can download LOTS of different Linux distros at the VMware site and use the VMware Player for free.

note (in case) - the latest VMWare player (5) is not free for commercial use
(I dont know was the previous version or not, there seems to be a lot of confusion).

It's very weird - in order to use it commercially, you have to buy Fusion - which is a Mac programme....

[80´s hair metal mode]

Just an Iron Maiden video!!?!?!??!

[/80´s hair metal mode]

the drummer is the top candidate there I think - the rest look (and sound ;p) to me like they'd pass in a seventies gig

[ !!! skip to about 0:40 to avoid intro ]

[edit] in fairness it was only 1982 (had to look that up) - I was more aware of metal in the seventies - too much other interesting stuff (for me) happening as of the late seventies... [/edit]

-if no other program can do all that OneNote can do, then there is no other program to export everything to, I would say. But of course I don't know.
good point :)
And it does sound very good/versatile what I've heard about it.

At the moment I am working with some older documents written in Word 2003, and I am having troubles with my new third-party programs editing them without ruining them. Actually I was thinking this very afternoon (before I knew about this thread) "I wish I had stayed loyal to Microsoft (Office)!"

... of course then there's the possibility that you'd have similar trouble in Word 2010 with Word 2003 docs...
5732
Isn't one of the problems with One Note that you cant export?
... or am I wrong there?

Starting with 2007 you can. Choices for filetype are PDF, XPS, MHT, DOC and DOCX along with a OneNote section (.one).

Sry, I wasnt clear - I meant to be able to move everything out - in a format that I can import it elsewhere.

I have a first implementation of FFSS.exe which is Firefox Session Save. For now the hotkey is hard wired as Control-Shift F10.  The idea is you have FF open with multiple tabs. Make it the active window and hit the hotkey.  It uses macros to change tabs and copy the addressbar url to the clipboard, then save the list to a text file.

would it be possible to save the tab title as well as the url?

[...]
How do you want to do it. Alternate url/title/url/title or urlFile.txt  titleFile.txt?  If the latter than I could add it to my utility without messing it up. I could just add an .ini option to save the titles to a separate file or not. If you want to do it another way I should be able to knock off a custom if it's not complicated. :)

Sounds great! It was an idea off the top of my head - I hadn't really thought it through.  Sometimes I research stuff and save the titles and url to a spreadsheet or outliner. In terms transferring the info, I think I can use it no matter how it's saved.

I like that one.

Native resolution is extremely low for a 46" screen (1366 x 768) - I know you can bump that up but it's never as good as the native resolution (I believe).

I was contacted by the editor of German c't magazine, and he want's to put a write up in there. If there is a way to get this set up soon that would be great so people have a place to download without crashing anything. Thanks a lot!

that's brilliant - c't is about the only good quality widely available german language computer mag - it's got a pretty large circulation.

PS might be best to send mouser a pm or email

I am under windows xp for the several years, so I would like a more simple thing that Directory Opus.

I cant understand though how someone like you is satisfied with Windows Explorer when there are so many good replacement file managers (including many free ones).

General Software Discussion / Re: Do I need O&O DiskImage?
« Last post by tomos on August 30, 2012, 03:43 PM »
Well, it's still a good question - for me :)
FWIW I have it on my computer (I think because I got it on offer for 10 dollars or so). I use it occasionally, but have yet to do a test restore.

I'm low tech, so I use O&O & Windows7 image-backup and if anything goes really wrong, I'll pray that one of them will work. If not, reinstall.

It has an apalling interface, but not much worse than Acronis before it (my previous imaging software). Otherwise it all comes down to that restore, hopefully far in the future...

I had to look up this µm measurement (micron) - it's 0.001 mm.

That car is 285 µm = .285mm. I would have thought that about the size of the head of a pin, but it turns out that's almost 2mm...

Do you want the hotkey to [1] actually rename the file, or, [2] just to get it in edit mode with the cursor in the correct place?

For [2] -
a) Windows 7 / Explorer
b) (better yet) Directory Opus
c) XYPlorer
d) Probably any other decent file manager out there (?)

I think the question is:
what changed?

I'm presuming you would have told us about new hardware. Could it simply be monitor aging, or does that fact only some files changed rule that out?

General Software Discussion / Re: Boot Disk Failure: after replacing hard drive
« Last post by tomos on August 28, 2012, 02:51 PM »
I've had problems with Windows 7 using the largest drive to store all the boot info, even if the OS was on a smaller drive. So if you swap out the non-OS drive that has the boot info on it, you will not be able to boot to your OS.

I'm not sure if this is the problem you are experiencing or not.

I had something similar during Win7 install (I cant remember why, but it did choose a different drive for the mini-partition. I resinstalled with the second drive temporarily disconnected.)
So check if the 100MB boot partition is on the same drive as the OS.
5750
There we go. That's pretty close to what I need.
that's what I thought :)

I'll fiddle with it. Thanks!

have fun ;-)
I see you can also make shortcuts for various actions

Screenshot - 2012-08-28 , 15_41_18.png

I also use that FF tweak where you can stop the tabs actually loading - i.e. if you open a window with 50 tabs, only the active tab will load. Damned if I can remember how that is done though...
If you're interested and dont know about it, I can search here, I usually post about stuff here so as I have some chance of finding it again lol.

(I also use session manager for keeping track of closed tabs.)
