General Software Discussion / Re: Metadata search software
« Last post by tomos on September 15, 2012, 09:48 AM »
Shouldnt indexing/desktop search programmes have this covered?
I have no idea myself not having ever used one, but I would have thought they'd do it (?)

e.g. Archivarius, forum post here (from a search) mentions it searching image metadata - if it can do that it can surely do pdf's etc.

^ an important point is that it allows you to block those analytics as well. But I guess people realise that...

What I found interesting is that it showed that google analytics were 'working' here, in spite of the fact that I opted out with google, and in spite of having google's "Google Analytics Opt-out Add-on" installed in Firefox.

But now it's blocked

Pretty cool song, with sweet video, "My Door Bell":

Dude kind of reminds me of Johnny Depp.

He (Jack White/White Stripes) has some great songs, and really super old blues and country classic covers e.g. Death Letter (Son House Cover live)

I'm not sure who wrote this one (also unfortunately couldnt find the official video on YT - possibly here - but blocked for me) but I love it - Loretta Lynn & Jack White & co (starts about 15 seconds in)

He did (wrote/produced/played) some bond theme lately too - the one with Alicia Keys, lets see...

I guess since it builds on Thunderbird, you do not get more security, compatibility, or speed -- so what features do you feel are a big step up?

for me, these would all be very interesting (depending on how implemented):

File and Image Search (I miss this a lot in Tbird)
Conversation Views
Powerful Tagging (another biggee)
Focus Pane
Message Annotation

Seeing as there's no plans to develop new features for Thunderbird, I'm wondering where that will leave Postbox in the future...

For my next phone I'm seriously considering going for the smallest, lightest device available that lets me make and receive calls, that's it.
~hipster-nosh

I presume you've seen {hipster?}superboyac's thread about wanting a small phone
I want a Sony Xperia SX, but I think it's stupid to buy one

Back with the Roboform Bitsdujour thread (seeing as I took it off-topic):

I see (Siber Systems/)Michelle's last response to Steven says:

I feel like I've adequately answered your question multiple times. I would appreciate it if you could contact us directly if you have any additional questions.

My emphasis - I guess that translates to dont post here any more.

Also see that wraith continued with the topic. I was just wondering if the answers were satisfactory (she suggests using backup feature) ?

Reminds me of neuer wein (Federweisser/wikipedia) you get here in late-summer/early-autumn. It's basically fermented grape juice. I like it myself before it get's too strong. When it has a bit of alcohol in it, I find it has quite a different effect to 'normal' alcohol - spaced feeling, headache/hangover kicks in very quick. Around here (Pfalz), they eat zwiebelkuchen (onion 'cake'/tart) with it. Nice, but a dangerously explosive combination for me...

I'm more interested in discovering new recipes.

one I've had here that was very good was "rumtopf". The one I had was made with mainly fresh fruit (apples, pears, not sure what else) and some dried fruit -currants or raisins -the ones without the seeds.
I dont know how long it needs to be steeped for, but I'm sure you'll find a recipie out there ;-)

I've also done fermented fruit with canned fruits although I no longer have the 'seed' culture.

??? whats that? or, more to the point, howzat done?

FWIW Amazon allows something similar. I posted a detailed and (in places) negative review of a popular tech book, which was later taken down at the request of the author. Had the same thing happen to my somewhat critical review of the book The 30$ Film School.

I gather this sort of thing happens more often than we'd expect.

I'm a bit gobsmacked about that - that's worthy of it's own thread imo...

It already has a thread - the one about the meaning of User reviews. If all the bad ones get taken down...

well, there would suit too - there's two amazon comments threads AFAIK, but both those threads are about reviews being paid for. I havent heard of reviews being censored...

Now that I'm definitely gonna try. We've already got glass topped canning jars...and some nice brandy nobody is drinking. All I'd need to get is some grapes - and I have to do some grocery shopping tonight anyway!

If you want to make something that will keep and taste reasonably good, I think you're better off starting with dried fruit of your choice.
I've tried keeping fresh fruit in alcohol -it did keep- but it wasnt very successful tastewise. OTOH I've tasted dried fruit soaked for a few years in strong alcohol and it tasted good.

I made sloe gin one year (that's made with fresh sloes) - it's very tasty if you like liqueur (@40 proof is it still "just" a liqueur?). I dont myself, but it tasted absolutely super in fruit salad.

probably didnt have much time for family?

Not from looking at what was said about him.  The thing is, I've seen it done.  I know someone that I work with that's incredibly devoted to his family, incredibly good at his job, and is incredibly involved in EVE.  A lot of it is knowing how to manage the time.  And I play MMOs quite a bit, and it doesn't get in the way of my family nor my job.  It's very possible.

I can imagine...

(I'm fairly inefficient with my time...)

^ FWIW I'll repost this which I found a fair opposition counter-balance to Lustig

This video actually gives you REAL science to back up claims, and not just some namby-pamby soft claims and BS like you usually get. (Very refreshing!)

Sugar the bitter truth

I recommend watching that video very highly. I cannot stress enough just how insightful it is, and how good the information is. Most often you get some wishy-washy BS with no hard science and no real information. This guy is hard core and doesn't dumb things down. He has actual information and explains it intelligently. That being said, put your thinking cap on as it will challenge you unless you are well educated in biochemistry.

Accidentally came across a very good critique of this video here:
The bitter truth about fructose alarmism.
Summary:
it's all about context/quantity. Demonising one thing/factor is not helpful for people's understanding of things. And it appears that he (Lustig) has gotten a lot more carried away than the evidence warrants.
The critique is *not* saying sugar is good for you :p

Gets very well trashed out in the comments, including some debate with Dr. Lustig (author/presenter of the video).

Gaming... And leading a guild/alliance? How did he manage to do his job? MMOs like that are incredibly time intensive.

probably didnt have much time for family?

I just noticed the difference between the chef cuckoo and this card game. The chef cuckoo one has more colorful cards and attractive. You really need to compete on small things like these.

that's where the kickstarter money would come in I think (?)
I mean that's a lot of ($killed) work to do - whether illustrated or photographed.

Well, I used to cook steak with carmelised onions (fry onions with a little sugar till they brown).
Onions are quite sweet when cooked, so why not go the whole hog and do caramel ones -
I'd try them :-*

Just to note that the default saving (AFAIK) is in png, *not* in bmp format.
PNG will not go as small as a compressed JPG but the quality is a lot better, especially for graphics which would include most screenshots.

... but you may know all this already ;-)
