It takes longer to start up from Hibernate on my netbook than doing a fresh boot. :-/
Still glad I didn't get one of those :o It's totally not worth the annoyance.

Well, to be fair, I put Windows 7 on it and it wasn't really designed to handle that. :-[

And Rhapsody is the first to say NO. The model can't work and keep content providers in business:
http://news.cnet.com..._105-20032119-1.html

Our philosophy is simple too--an Apple-imposed arrangement that requires us to pay 30 percent of our revenue to Apple, in addition to content fees that we pay to the music labels, publishers and artists, is economically untenable.

And you gotta love the comments below that article where people are actually defending Apple on this...  ::)

Good job for Rhapsody! I hope Amazon and all the others follow suit.

DC Gamer Club / AI War: Fleet Command
« Last post by Deozaan on February 15, 2011, 10:20 PM »
This is a deep (real-time) strategy game made by Indie Dev Arcen Games that reduces the need to micromanage and allows you to focus more on strategy. It's not about building the largest, most powerful army and wiping out all traces of the competition. In fact, if you attempt that, you will likely find yourself wiped out pretty quickly. This game is about trying to appear insignificant and choosing your battles. Also, there is no PVP in this game. If you play with other players, it's cooperative vs the AI.

A great review was just written up on EuroGamer:

You're humanity's last hope, because you're the last of humanity. You're given a single chance to reclaim the galaxy, and there's one giant, obscene obstacle in your way: the AI. Think Terminator or the Matrix; think any sort of sci-fi where the computers take over and you've got yourself the premise of AI War. Except this time, the battle is fought over the entire galaxy, over dozens of them. You've got to take it all back and the AI can stop you at any time. You've just got to piss it off enough to think you're a genuine threat.

This is Buckaroo, only the stakes are a little higher, and the scale is cosmic. Each little piece of detritus you're littering over that angry donkey is a star system, a data bank, a factory. At any point, you might well take one thing too many, and suddenly, in the top left of your screen, a little message is going to pop up. It's not going to be a pleasant sort of message. It will read something like this:

"30,000 ships headed towards your system in 5:00."

That timer at the end is going to start ticking down and you're going to frantically start to build up your defences, except somewhere, in the back of your mind, you're going to know it's not enough. It'll never be enough. You recall all your ships, from everywhere, to try to mount some kind of realistic defence, but somehow they seem to be moving slower than usual, or maybe it's just because this is so much more urgent and your mind is wanting, no, needing, them to move faster. And oh God the AI ships are here and we're all going to die.

That's AI War at its climax. Well, one of its climaxes. This happens so often, with you barely scraping through each time, that if you aren't a frayed mess of overloaded nerve endings, you're probably just as much a machine as the one you're fighting.

The third expansion, Light of the Spire has just released (and is discounted) on Steam. Also, to celebrate, AI War itself is 50% off temporarily.

Try out the free demo and see if you like it. If so, buy it! I'd really love to have some other players to attempt to defeat the AI with. I keep losing. :-[

Also, Arcen Games are a great studio! They're like Stardock in that they don't have any DRM in their games beyond a simple serial number that you use to unlock the full version from the demo. There's no internet connection required to activate or login, no phoning home, no max activations, etc. (In fact, if you like Sins of a Solar Empire by Stardock, you really need to check out this game. Even though they are way different, I can't help but be reminded of SoaSE when I try to describe the game to others.)

It's not your job to make sure users are smart enough or care enough about their own security. Your job is just to make sure that you do what you can to ensure their data is safe on your end. If their account gets compromised due to their own stupidity or mistake (e.g. being duped by a phishing site/e-mail), well, that's their own fault.

I'm no security expert, but to me this means a few things, and probably a few more things to an expert:

1. Make sure you store their password using a known-safe encryption algorithm.
2. Don't transmit the password back and forth in plain-text (use https or a hash or token or something).
3. Allow secure passwords. You wouldn't believe (or maybe you would) how many sites limit the length of your password to only 8-12 characters, which can only be alphanumeric. Not that hard to brute-force...
4. Put measures in place to prevent brute-force, such as temporarily locking an account or requiring additional verification after x attempts in y minutes.

Once you've done all you can on your end to ensure that people can't get the password from you, then that's all you are required to do, as far as I am concerned. Although, I suppose at that point it would be safest to assign a password for the user but allow them to change it if they choose to do so.

Another, third option would be to e-mail them a temporary password and require them to change it or assign a different permanent one when they first login. That way even if the e-mail gets compromised, the password will definitely not be the same if the user has ever logged in.

I used to use the same password on just about every website, but then once Gawker had their data compromised due to a stupid security flaw on their end, many of my accounts became compromised.

That's bad on me because I used the same password on many sites, but terrible on their part because it was them that allowed my password to get leaked, not me. Nobody brute-forced it or guessed it or based on information that I made publicly available. It got into the wrong hands because Gawker didn't store it securely. >:(

I just looked at the source article, and you forgot to quote the really bad part (emphasis added):

However, Apple does require that if a publisher chooses to sell a digital subscription separately outside of the app, that same subscription offer must be made available, at the same price or less, to customers who wish to subscribe from within the app. In addition, publishers may no longer provide links in their apps (to a web site, for example) which allow the customer to purchase content or subscriptions outside of the app.

Living Room / Re: Apple: if we get you subscribers, we deserve a cut

I really shouldn't make a snit over this. Companies should just charge Apple users a 30% tax on everything they buy. In fact, double it to 60% and make 30% off Apple's back. Problem fixed. If Apple users complain, give them Steve Jobs' iPhone number.

I agree with this, except they can't. From your own post previously (emphasis added):

Publishers who offer out-of-app subscriptions, though, also have to offer in-app subscriptions and the price has to be the same or lower than for subscriptions processed outside of the app. Apple will take a 30% cut from these in-app transactions.

So in my opinion it's time for publishers to withdraw their apps from Apple and make it perfectly clear to their customers exactly why they had to, until Apple wises up. And then maybe stay out anyway if Apple changes their mind.

I can hope, can't I? :D

That said, Logitech has a new trackball available for pre-order which has stuff in logical places. I, for one, cannot wait for this device!

Logitech Wireless Trackball M570

Thanks for bringing this to my attention! Sounds awesome! It will be so nice to finally be able to go wireless with a trackball with stuff in its logical place.

I don't think I'm going to pre-order though. I bet I could buy it new off Amazon when it comes out and get free shipping.

I just ordered it from NewEgg. Like Amazon, they list it as $10 cheaper than MSRP and have free shipping, plus they have a promo code (EMCKHJK44) that takes off a few bucks, plus I had a $30 gift card from a previous mail-in-rebate. So I got that $60 mouse for $17!

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

The system is already getting 8 or 16 GiB of RAM, so there's plenty of that to go around. After reading the anandtech article quoted earlier by 40hz I'm convinced that Sandy Bridge will be my next processor, but I'm not sure if that's what my sister will end up getting.

Sadly at this point I've mostly lost interest in trying to build her a system, because she doesn't know the difference between the components but I keep hearing (second-hand or perhaps third-hand) from her brother-in-law that the machine I'm trying to build her is inferior to the machine he would get her, yet I've not seen any specs of what he's offering to get her. Meanwhile I keep revising my build and submitting the list of specs for review. Without anything to go on besides general information (Intel 4 Core, 8 GiB RAM) I don't have a reference point to compare prices and specs so I think I'll bow this one out.

Again, thanks for your feedback. It's been useful either way.

I'm REALLY curious to see what Dell and Archos and other tablet makers do when Android 3.0 comes out. I expect Dell will provide FW updates to 3.0 to their exiting line; I expect Archos will cap their Gen8 (Current line) tablets at 2.x and release 3.0 on their Gen8 Gen9 devices in the fall. I WISH they'd update the Archos 5IT to Froyo (or even better Android 3.0!) but I doubt it will ever happen.

If my manufacturer won't support the latest version of Android, then I'd just run something like CyanogenMod on my tablet. It's what I do for my phone.

Android 2.2 on a phone that "only supports" 1.6.
