General Software Discussion / Re: What's a good memorization software?
« Last post by superboyac on May 08, 2007, 01:21 PM »
Unfortunately, I heavily rely on those HTML and template underpinnings (and therefore SuperMemo). I usually keep a copy of my learning material in Evernote, which I move back and forth via XSLT/Ruby scripts.
Those templates are nice, let me ask you a few questions on that.  My goal is to do as little editing as possible in the program.  I want to do the bulk of my editing in Excel, because for this music theory stuff, whenever I have to write a question, I have to repeat the question for all 12 keys, and I have an algorithm in excel that does this for me.  So, I just want to bring it into the program (supermemo or other) and just start learning.  However, it would be nice if, simultaneous with the import, I can apply a template to format the text.  The problem for me is I have to use two different fonts, one for text and another for music symbols.

kingding, in Supermemo, what kinds of things can you do with the templates?  I tried to play with the templates in 2004, but I couldn't figure anything out.  Would it be possible to do something like, import 200 items, and take the first line of each item and apply a font, then take the second line of the item and apply a different font?  That would be very helpful.  If I had to change each one manually, it would take forever and wouldn't be worth it.

Thanks.

True.  I try keeping my hard drives as cool as possible.  It's an old computer, and when I first built it, I didn't give cooling that much attention, so there are certain things I'm physically limited to in the case.  The next computer I build will have a much greater emphasis on cooling.  So far, it's handles itself pretty well.  But I've had two hard drives crash in it over the years, so who knows what that was due to.  Well, one of them was those IBM DeathStars, and the other just happed recently.

PS, I just transferred my data last night, and it seemed to go without a problem.  Thanks.
5653
This will not do damage to the drive, or it shouldnt if the drive was manufacturer in any decent fabrication facility. I wouldnt worry about it honestly. It would be like doing a full format on the drive.
OK, thanks.  I won't worry about it then.  I should be safe anyway, since my data is backed up (crosses fingers).

I am about to synchronize my files from one hard drive to another (and repeat it for a 3rd drive).  Now, the last time I did this (about 2 weeks ago), just a few hours after everything was copied, the hard drive died.  I have since returned it and received the warranty replacement from Seagate.  I am about to start synchronizing again, but I don't want to do it if it is too taxing on the hard drive.  Shouldn't drives be able to handle this?  I don't think I'm doing anything the drive wasn't designed for.

I realize I am transferring a lot of stuff.  It takes about 3-4 hours.  Maybe the heat sustained for that long damages the drive.  The problem is, what else do I do?  Do I have to transfer it more slowly?  Should I transfer a few gigabytes, take a break, and then transfer again?  Seems kind of silly to me.

If any of you hard drive gurus know about this, please let me know.

Thanks AndyM, but the asap-utilities mentioned above were perfect for my needs.  They add an enormous amount of funcionality to Excel.
5656
I'm not sure if it is a pefect solution to your problem but you may look here:

http://www.asap-util...amp;utilities=Export.

I think that the ASAP tools are indispensable for everyone working with Excel. Besides this, these tools
http://www.excel-extools.com/ are very handy, too.
Awesome!  That is so cool.  What would I do without you guys?

So, I think that I am almost 90% sure that I will get FullRecall (thanks kingding!).

Supermemo is powerful, but not well-designed.  Sometimes, when programs are powerful, they can't avoid being complicated.  But Supermemo ("not trying to be rude, but...") is unnecessarily complicated.  The interface, like kingding said, is truly "unbearable".  I don't know why the author doesn't update it to some more modern interface.  Honestly, the GUI is from windows 3.1 days, not even Windows 98.

It joins the list of my top 3 Worst Interfaces Ever:
The Godfather, Supermemo, (something I can't think of right now)

Now, hopefully, FullRecall will continue to evolve quickly.
5658
In Excel, whenever you want to convert your data to a text file (csv, tab-delimited, whatever) it asks like 3 questions every single time and it gets really annoying.  You have to do a "save as" and pick the format you want to save it as, then it tells you like 2 times saving it will remove the formatting (duh!).  So freakin annoying.  The worst part is that afterwards, the actualy open excel document is now the exported text file (because it was done as a "save as" it assumes you want to change the current document to the new one).

Is there a plugin or something where I can just highlight a group of cells and export it to a text file?

kingding, I've been looking at these softwares all day (almost 10 hours!)!  Supermemo is ridiculous.  Like you said, the interface is unbearable.  I would have tolerated it if there was a way to somehow import excel files into it (by way of csv or tab-delimited, something!).  But there was nothing, not even a difficult way.

You're right about full recall, it's much better than Supermemo.  I don't know about all of supermemo's fancy features, but all I need is the excel import capability and Full Recall seems to do that fairly easily.  Also, the content of my flashcards are just plain, simple text, so I don't need to do much with it--once it's imported from excel, I doubt I'll tweak it much.  Besides, supermemo is $45, and full recall is $25, AND it seems like FUll Recall is maintained more often, AND it's interface is not a throwback to windows 3.1

Like I said, if supermemo was easy to use, it would be great.  But it's almost impossible to use.  I think I'm going to get Full Recall...I'll sit on it for a while.  I like features and power, but sometimes these authors go overboard and completely forget about usability.  I had a similar experience with the GodFather vs. Tag & Rename (for mp3 tag editing).  The Godfather is really powerful, but using it is like flying a plane.  It's tag editing for goodness sake!  Anyway, what a long day, I wasted all Friday checking out memory software, great.  That's going to impress the ladies.

You know what I realized just now while reading this thread?  I don't really use Google, or any search engine, anymore for actually searching for information.  Most of the time now, I pretty much know where I want to go and Google just helps me get there (if this is making any sense).  I rarely do blind searches, so to say, like where I type a word and just go.  And this may due to a combination of many reasons:

--I've used the internet so much now, that that initial curiosity I used to have is pretty much gone.  Now, I have a pretty good idea of where I want to go, and I ignore anything else in between.

--I have a "sense" of what is a legitimate link and what isn't.  I'm sure most of you do this too.  In the list of results, you can tell from a very quick glance which link is a good one, and which is junk.  Novice or uninformed users probably click on a lot of the crap, and that's one reason why most non-computer people get a lot of adware and spyware.  And then they go on to say how it's Windows' fault.  Not really, it's just that us powerusers can tell what we should and shouldn't click on.  But it's kind of hard to explain it.

--I'm a lot more busy now.  I have less time to click around and get distracted by random thought chains.  This is actually not that true, because if there was something really interesting, I'd probably take a couple minutes of my work day to check it out.  Honestly, I've run out of things to search for (randomly, that is).

--Trust.  Do I really trust anything out there?  Not really.  If I search for "best notepad alternative software", am I going to trust the slew of sites that get returned.  Probably not.  In those cases, I'd go straight to the source, like here (DC forum) where I trust the opinions of the people writing.  Is that Google's fault?  Not really.  How many people out there either know what they are talking about, or have unbiased (financially speaking, that is) opinions?  The internet has allowed anyone to put up any type of content unrestricted.  Even in real life, I don't trust too many people, and I go straight to the experts for answers to my questions.  So, in a sense, Google is just mimicking real life.

I have a feeling that no matter what happens, it will eventually be reduced to a pile of average-at-best junk, because the internet is going to represent society as a whole.  If you put everyone in the world in one place, and take an opinion, that opinion will be the average opinion, not the best or the most knowledgeable one.  So how can we avoid that?  We can't really.  It's up to me as an individual to filter through all that and find who I am looking for.

That's a little off topic, but let's get back down to the money issue.  People are making money participating in these broad, all-encompassing phenomena, like Google.  Well, again, I can't do anything about that, nor will I try.  If I could make money doing it, i would also.  I probably wouldn't be as successful because I have the desire to not let gimmicks ruin the quality of the product...but unfortunately, that might not necessarily be good for business.

There aren't a lot of people like you, mouser, who are so dedicated to providing quality content with your level of expertise without a concern financially.  You are indeed a very rare breed of person to do all this, pretty much for free.  We'd all like to think that if we were CEO's of multi-billion dollar companies, that we'd do it differently and with integrity.  But I can't say that.  Honestly, I don't what I would do because I can't even fathom myself in that situation.  I'm not afraid to say that I may turn out to be just as greedy or unethical as the worst ones.  I don't know what kind of pressures they deal with, so I can't say one way or the other.

Anyway, that's a couple of things that I was just thinking about while reading this thread.

Thanks kingding...I can't tell which one is best for me.  Those flashcards are nice, but not for me...I'm trying to memorize things specific to jazz.

I can't decide between vtrain and supermemo.  I like Vtrain because it's fairly straightforward, but I am feature-aholic, and I can see that Supermemo has tons of features, I just can't figure the program out yet (it's pretty complicated).  I wonder, is there anything Vtrain can do that supermemo can't do?

Templates:
One cool thing I like about vtrain is that you can apply a template (sort of).  For example, if there are 12 keys to memorize, instead of writing the question out 12 times with just the key letter being different, I can write a general question "This scale is for _ key?" and just fill in the blank part in my flashcards.

Also, because for each "thing" that I have to memorize, I need to memorize it in all keys, so I am doing some stuff in excel (transposing, etc.) and I want to import the content from excel into the program.  Vtrain can do this with delimiters, I can't see how to do it in Supermemo (although I see import functions available).

Also, does Supermemo make it easy to work with different symbols?  I have a special music font, and I have to switch back and forth between a normal text font and the music symbols fonts.  Vtrain has a symbol map that pops up with each question for this, can Supermemo accomplish something like this also?

I don't plan on doing anything really complicated...most of the difficult work will be done in excel, as far as the content of the questions.  I'll need to import them in and perhaps tweak them a little bit.  The template thing would help, if there was a way I could ask all the questions in the same way, without having to write the same repetitive stuff out every time.

Basically, I don't want to use the software so much as to make and format the questions, but rather to present me the questions/answers using whatever learning algorithm it has.

What about WhereIsIt?

I thought it is commonly known as the best of the bunch, but maybe things have changed.  I like it, and it is one of the first pieces of software I have ever bought.  Very powerful.

Regarding EverNote's new 2.0 release...
superboyAC,

467 posts in this thread, no definitive answer...  Given that Frankenote doesn't exist (yet), and sometime you have to get real work done, which program(s) have committed to?  One can't run several equivalents side by side indefinitely.

<gulp>  I just realised I do something close to that   :-[
rjbull, if I understood your question correctly, you are asking what I use for notetaking?  Well, here:

  • If I come across something that I want to save (random text, internet article), I'll usually just dump it in evernote.  I don't organize at all beyond this point, just dump it in because I know it's easy to find later

  • If it's something more important that I know I need to keep long-term (passwords, software license details, important information about music, etc.) I'll stick it in my favorite tree-hierarchy program.  This used to be Mybase, but I think I am moving towards TexNotes Pro because it seems like it is much more powerful (albeit slower).

That's what I currently do.  I don't have a problem using several applications.  I'd rather use 3 very good applications than one sort of good application, even if it means spreading out the information.  I'll take quality over convenience, especially if the inconvenience is manageable.

All that being said, Zoot is a program that doesn't get talked about a lot.  There's good reason for it because it's getting developed at the pace of a crippled snail.  But IF it ever does get updated, it would be interesting because you can do a lot with it.  It's like Evernote, but more powerful.  I can (potentially) see myself combining the information I have in Evernote and mybase (or texnotes) into an updated Zoot.  The only thing I'll miss is Texnotes unbelievably awesome formatting options.  Man, Texnotes is the most polished of all these applications.

Regarding EverNote's new 2.0 release...

Is it me, or is EN becoming eerily similar to the old Zoot?  Think about it, with the new note-titles that evernote just added, it is now a 3-pane notetaker (of which there are very few) and has many other similar features:
  • 3-pane layout (categories in left-pane, note-titles in top-right pane, and note content in bottom-right pane

  • find-as-you-type search feature.  Both of them are good, but a little different in their implementation.

  • Auto-categories, where notes will automatically get categorized based on a user-defined rules or filters.  Zoot's features in this area are much more powerful, I must say.

  • Content capturing capabilities.

I mean, the similarities between the two programs are striking.  Unfortunately, the development of Zoot has been excruciatingly slow, while EN has remained very modern and updated (being a much newer application).  Zoot has a lot of people (a cult, even) that has been dying for the author (the "Admiral") to update the 16-bit interface to 32-bit.  It has literally taken years.  Now, EN has just about caught up in features.  I would think the Admiral would have a little bit more pressure to finish up, but I guess we will just have to wait.  Furthermore, Zoot is quite expensive (~$100) and EN is free or $50 for the full-version which just allows some support for handwritten notes and a couple of other features that most users really don't need.

I don't want to criticize Zoot, because I have no idea what is involved in writing software, but it just seems like it has taken a really long time.  It's a great software, but if you wait long enough, a viable alternative will eventually come along.  I hope Zoot gets updated soon.
5666
Good idea, I'll do that.

Dude, I have no idea what you're talking about.  I still don't get it.
5668
If you did, and you don't use it, I'll gladly pay you for it.  I think I'm starting to prefer it over other outlines.  But I'm getting sick of all these softwares that cost $40-50, I can't afford them all.
5669
This is pretty cool.  If you really wanted to do it right, may I suggest this:
have some kind of program that will update the archive on your computer, similar to how virus definitions are updated every day.  This way, the archive on your computer will always be up to date.

Of course, this is really hardcore.  I've never heard of a forum archiving it's content!  Gotta love it here!

Well, maybe DO may be able to offer a special DC discount for upgrades if we ask them nicely?

I don't consider the upgrade discount a "discount" really.  I'd just consider it the regular upgrade fee.  Hopefully, we can get an additional special for being members of this fabulous community.

AFAICT the current DC code will only give a 25% discount ie approx $AU21.  If you already have a DO licence you can go to the DO website and claim the upgrade discount which is $AU30 for a single user.

BTW the $AU is starting to come back against the $US in the last day or so.

Jeff
Aw, crap.  I was kind of hoping there would be a DC discount in addition to the regular price of the upgrade (which i wouldn't really call a discount).  Freakin A, $40 for an upgrade, now I know what everyone here was complaining about--it is a bit much.

Mouser, is there any way we can convince DO to let us use the 25% discount for the upgrade and maybe reduce the price to about $30?

I think I'm having a problem with CHS and clipboard managers in general.  In Firefox, it seems like the clips don't get captured by the program.  Whenever I Ctrl-C something in Firefox, I can paste it using the normal Ctrl-V, but it doesn't show up in the CHS list.  How come this happens?  It seems like sometimes I will try to capture a clip and it just doesn't show up in the list.

I actually appreciated learning this little nugget of info.  I'm pretty particular myself, so I like this sort of thing.  For example, I just learned that DVD originally stood for "Digital Versatile Disc" not "Digital Video Disc".
