Thanks for that nudone - what an eye opener. Talk about caveat demptor... You're right, the license plate is the icing on the cake!

I'm still confused about what's happening with X1. Following the Yahoo Desktop Search download link takes you to www.x1.com/yahoo and this message:

Your free desktop search tool should begin downloading immediately. As a preferred partner of Yahoo!, we now offer the free version of our award-winning desktop search product to all Yahoo! users (X1 Professional Client v5.6.4 Build 3470 ).

So it *looks* like X1 will remain free. What I *think* is happening is that they're simplifying things and going with one installer for all versions. From reading their forums, it *looks* like they are going to make the indexing of network drives an option available to home users for $50, and are simplifying things by using one installer so that when you first install X1 this feature will function as a 30 day trial before the installation reverts to the Desktop client version (which will remain free)...

Post New Requests Here / Re: Global Text Replacement
« Last post by Darwin on May 19, 2007, 03:13 PM »
Advanced Find and Replace 3 should be able to tackle this (albeit for a price! It's shareware). It's got more features than you're looking for but despite being shareware it's quite cheap ($29.99) for its category.

I'm sure someone here will come along soon, though, with a free/donationware alternative...

One other thought: there is V-Grep, which is postcardware (couldn't find a link to its homepage so Snapfiles will have to do...).

broken85 - I have no experience with, and no access to, the 64-bit version of windows but have you tried playing with the Windows Explorer Replacement settings in DOpus? The setup in this screenshot should be the best of both worlds:

Welcome to Donationcoder, Adrien! Search the forums for AutoHotKey pointers. The most prominent thread I can think of/remember is Living without AutoHotkey - possible?. Check it out!

That's great Justice - looking forward to the review!

No - you're right, not cheap (but worth every penny in my opinion). Note that there is a Donationcoder discount that is active on DOpus...

Hi all,

Just a note to let you all know that DOpus 9.0.0.3 is out (you have to download it manually from here as the "check for latest version" link doesn't pick it up from the Help menu within the program).

Changes are listed here (pdf file).

DOpus = Directory Opus from GPSoftware. It's a Windows Explorer replacement (if you want it to) and an extremely powerful file manager.

Living Room / Re: To the community
« Last post by Darwin on May 18, 2007, 08:02 PM »
Josh, thank  you for the wonderful post. I don't think that mouser's influence on literally thousands of peoples' lives can be overstated - he's created a community that is now part of the fabric of many of our daily lives. I like the fact that you extended your expression of gratitude to everyone who participates - we are all part of a community and it operates as it does because people contribute.

Thank YOU Josh, for reminding me that this is a community and is what it is because of EVERYONE involved!

Yeah... the developer strikes me as being REALLY reasonable. Also, note that academic pricing is much cheaper than the regular pricing (but there is no functional difference at all), so that might be worth exploring. Anyway, I'm with Grorgy - be cheeky  :P

Thanks, Carl! Nice little review. I purchased Pro as well, though I haven't played with it too much yet. I like the fact that it makes it possible to link to different pages by making words/phrases in documents hypertext. Nice and should really be a boon with notetaking.

Archivarius is very lightweight. It is under constant development and gets better with each release. Two points to keep in mind:

1. It's shareware
2. Support for searching and manipulating Outlook PST files is there but the implementation is via OLE, which means that initial indexing takes over an hour (worth it though) and updating the index takes upwards of 10-15 minutes. A switch to COM (used in other indexers) is planned for a future release.

I love this app, having come to it as a longtime YDS/X1 user. Archivarius is obviously more expensive and is not as capable in terms of previewing content but it is infinitely faster, more configureable, and lighter on resources. Just to stress an earlier point, it's also actively developed. Also, I've found the developer to be extremely prompt in replying to bug reports and suggestions and to be very courteous.

YMMV.
5665
Sweet, thanks Wordzilla! BTW, I neglected to underline, bold and italicise the fact that when you've finished indexing the rar file (using Archivarius but probably others like Google, MS and Copernic search engines as well), you can delete it and still read the indexed search results. Of course, you have to set things up so that the indexer doesn't automatically scan that folder for updates...

This means that the donationcoder forums are fully searchable for under 80 MB (not 200 as I reported above).

I would say it dates you quite a bit...

Wow, Carol. That's impressive and an eclectic assortment of subjects. One thing that teaching at a college has instilled in me is a desire to take more undergraduate courses and I intend to do just that after I finish my PhD... I'm too old for the tenure rat race so I might as well just keep learning!

Just one quibble (I think!) Carl, the discount for SFFS above is still showing as 50% whereas I *believe* it actually to be 30%. Congratulations to all the winners and a big thank you to Carl and the respective software authors for making the give away AND the discounts possible. As always, thanks to mouser for this incredible site.

EDIT: can't stand split infinitives  :-[ OK, so it dates me a bit, but years of schooling cannot be undone... BTW, love the following quote on the subject from Raymond Chandler, who was complaining to the editor of The Atlantic Monthly about a proofreader (from wikipedia):

"By the way, would you convey my compliments to the purist who reads your proofs and tell him or her that I write in a sort of broken-down patois which is something like the way a Swiss-waiter talks, and that when I split an infinitive, God damn it, I split it so it will remain split, and when I interrupt the velvety smoothness of my more or less literate syntax with a few sudden words of barroom vernacular, this is done with the eyes wide open and the mind relaxed and attentive. The method may not be perfect, but it is all I have."

I am not disciplined enough to compose long e-mails/posts in an external editor. I follow the same path as Hirudin - I've been burned enough times that I now hit ctrl-A and Ctrl-C pretty often when writing - because I use Clipmate, this provides me with mutliple backups that I can revisit weeks later, if I haven't deleted the contents of the main clipboard by then. Incidentally, I'm running the beta for Clipmate 7.2, which features the option of installing it and running it from a USB stick in addition to a harddrive. Very sweet.

Tom - you're not BladedThoth, are you?

Anyway, snagged, activated, and installed it earlier today. Haven't even opened it yet (wife's computer back from the shop so must get it back in shape for her. Yesterday was a write off as I was upgrading the harddrive in my notebook).

Link in above post was personalised (now removed) so here are the generic versions

   :-[

PS Tom is right - Office 2006 is a great package. They'll probably offer you a killer deal on an upgrade to 2007 when it ships. Note that they have a presentations app (like powerpoint) to add to the mix for the 2007 release AND they've been promising a database component for some time so in the future SoftMaker/Ashampoo Office will be that much more complete.
