General Software Discussion / Re: Google Chrome: Time for a Second Chance?

Yeah, some of the thinking is bizarre in some of these applications. I really like Splash Lite video player.  I and a few other people have been bugging them on their forum for PGS subtitle support.  The thing is an HD player without PGS subs support!! And they don't even respond!! It's really weird.

The other thing is they have this weird fashion sense of black background with navy blue controls.  Like, I feel like a blind man with a cane mousing around until I happen to hit a control.  One line of code they could have user adjustable background color!! But no!! That would be cheating!!!

Wow! That is pretty basic.  I found the "bug report" for it. Seems it was posted in 2008 and they are still working on it!!!  Sheesh!!

I would post that on their forum. That type of stuff they seem willing to fix. otoh any time I or other users bitch about the lousy subtitle support it's just ignored.  Not even "it's on the to do list" .. just null response.

Firefox extensions I miss most in Chrome:

...

It would be nice if SyncPlaces and CheckPlaces worked with chrome.  But now that I'm using the built in sync for extensions and all the rest of it, the advantage of using my own ftp with that extension evaporates. Although I still don't understand why it would be so tough to let you log into your own ftp and sync. I suspect it's not all that difficult. Somebody must get a tenth of a cent every time one of us logs into the google server or something. :)

It is annoying when something I'm used to in FF is not available in chrome. CheckPlaces can fetch favicons without opening a zillion tabs as example.  otoh I have about 23 AddOns in FF and I can only do a couple more things than chrome with 7.  And one of the 7 is Foxmarks, just to sync to FF now and then.  Getting by with a 1/2 dozen extensions ain't bad. :)

Foxmarks became xmarks, and is available on Chrome.

I have it.  Should have said XMarks.  Slip of the memory.  But I use google sync. XMarks I just use to sync FF from chromium. It would be so much easier to import and export a bookmarks.html but none of these browsers handle the import correctly from an .html file.  You have to do way to much massaging to get rid of dupes, get the bookmarks toolbar into shape. I don't understand why that is.

The first chrome flavor I tried was Iron.  What put me off was that some of the extensions and other software for chrome didn't like the fact that things were in different folders.  But with everything set up in Sync chromium is using all my extensions.  The same may be so with Iron.  When I was doing Iron I wanted to try to use my own ftp for storage, so I didn't set up the google sync.  Chromium should be fine too as long as you don't use google search with the default string.

MD5Hash 2.6 Bug fix.  Some controls weren't properly disabled when a filename was sent by a secondary instance of the application.

Now handles WM_DWMCOMPOSITIONCHANGED Windows message.  If Aero or transparency is toggled while the app is running it should adjust to remain usable.

MD5Hash 2.5 Version 2.5 is functionally the same. It uses a semi-transparent skin on Windows 7.

I'm hooked on it myself now.  With this chromium I don't get the auto updates so stuff shouldn't break mysteriously. It's running very stable. I like just unzipping instead of doing the install.  Only thing a bit of a pita is if it does crash, you have to kill like 9 processes in Task Manager. But that's pretty rare.

If anyone wants to try chromium 8 instead of regular chrome you can download here:

http://build.chromiu...ots/chromium-rel-xp/

Your mileage may vary. I tried the mini installer and stuff kept crashing.  But just unpacking the zip file and getting rid of regular chrome is working out great.  The main reason I took off the regular chrome is I have everything set up to sync and I don't want any problems that might pop up in chrome with favicons or any of that to spread to chromium. I've been using chromium 8 for a few days and everything seems very smooth in both Windows Seven 32 bit and Vista64.

Here's something interesting.  Apparently Chrome pings home on start-up to get a unique id(RLZ whatever that means) and this behavior was not supposed to happen with chromium(since it is "non-branded" as they say in marketing land.)  Well this user found it was still doing it in chromium. Supposedly the bug is now fixed. :)

I would really love this player if they would include PGS subtitle support.

The main thing distinguishing it from many other players is the ability to seek in .mkv video with impunity.  I don't know how many players just go away when I move the slider while watching an .mkv file.

It would really put this on top if they supported more than text subtitles.
I harass them periodically on their forum, along with a few other users, but to no apparent effect. :(

For true procrastinators.  Why struggle with terse sin tax today when you can pick it up effortlessly in the beyond?

I suspect that at that point the  correct 'sin tax' would be of utmost importance  ;D

Not only that, but "worms" become distinctly literal in nature. Ugh!! :)

The thing you have to watch for are those smart calories. Like laser-guided bombs, they only blow up certain people.

I've gotten into the habit of drinking Perrier with a bit of freshly squeezed lime juice.  The resulting burp can rattle the walls but my stomach feels great once the echo dies away. :)  I've abandoned other carbonated beverages. I'm sure the water is healthy but not so the junk snacks I use to get thirsty to enjoy the Perrier.  Seems I can't watch a movie without eating something crunchy out of a bag. :)

its impossible for any other site to get a version more recent than the one on dc.  they all originate from DC.

what happens is that i sometimes release a "silent" update, which means i might make a tiny change and increment the 3rd component of the version number, but not announce it because the change is so slight.

I was wondering about that. I noticed it on Softpedia.
They have been pretty good to deal with but I noticed on my stuff if I don't up the version number even if I send 'em an update notice, they won't post it. The other thing that gets old is messing around the pad files. I just make a comment in one of my postings that I have this new software and hope they post it.  I'm getting lazy. :)

General Software Discussion / Re: SRWare Iron 5.0.380 beta browser
« Last post by MilesAhead on October 11, 2010, 11:20 AM »
It's almost kinda' creepy. I'm running Chrome dev. channel.  The updates are so silent, the only way I can tell what version I have is to look in the about box.  Although now and then an extension stops working.  Still, it's way less intrusive than FF updates.

it does sound creepy since you put it that way. maybe an optional tray tip wouldn't hurt, i guess.. :)

I think I found a happy medium:

http://build.chromiu...romium-rel-xp/62116/

There are newer nightly builds but this one is working nicely.  I got the zip not the installer.
I removed Chrome 7.x dev I was using and got rid of google updater.  I also looked in the
registry for the supposed hidden unique ID.  I couldn't find it under the reputed keys. I'm
hoping this means they really got rid of it in Chromium.

I just logging into my sync.  The only thing that didn't work off the bat was Speed Dial.
But I copied the Local Storage folder from Chrome 7 and that got me going without redoing
the dials.

Supposedly this has hardware acceleration on by default. I don't notice any difference.
Either it's off or I have a crappy video card or both. :)

Other than that, everything seems to work great. Now I don't have to worry that
silent update will hose stuff that works just for the thrill of updating.

All I did to "install" wan unzip the file to its own folder and make a shortcut.
Some settings I got from chrome 7.x.  About the only thing I had to update
manually was the search engine settings.

You may want to get all your extensions running and leave the old chrome on for a few days
until you see how stable 8 is for you. In 2 days I haven't gotten a crash dialog though. Seems
smooth.

For 40 MB of disk space I wouldn't touch it. It could be your bios setup program or some other booting program in a hidden partition.  If it was 40 GB that's another matter. :)

Just wondering if anyone has figured out how to adjust brightness watching Netflix using Silverlight?  It will play in both chrome and firefox, but if it's too dark to watch I can't find any control to adjust brightness/contrast.  Some of the videos look like the cameraman left the cap on!

MD5Hash 2.4 Updated label on main dialog.

MD5Hash is also available for download on Softpedia.  I just informed them of this update.  But since they just link their download to my site anyway, whichever download link you use gets the same zip file. :)

General Software Discussion / Re: MD5Hash 2.3
« Last post by MilesAhead on October 04, 2010, 06:12 PM »
MD5Hash 2.3 Now has /main command line switch.  Only one param should be specified on the command line.  Either the switch /main (not case sensitive) or the name of a file or folder.

When run with /main, MD5Hash attempts to set itself up as the "main instance" of the application. If it succeeds it will show MD5Hash Main in the caption bar instead of just MD5Hash.

With a Main instance running, if you select 20 files in Explorer, right click and choose MD5Hash in the context menu, each copy that loads will send the file or folder name to the main instance, then close, instead of getting one result in each copy.

If you want to have more than one copy running, for example if you have more than one physical hard drive and want to process a large file on each drive, simply start MD5Hash in the normal way with no Main copy running.

To start a Main copy, if you don't like command line, I recommend creating a shortcut with the /main after the exe name as in this Target line:
c:\md5hash\md5hash.exe /main

Note: when file or folder name is specified on the command line, do not wrap with quotes even if it has spaces. This will cause processing of that item to fail.  The entire command tail is read as one string so quotes are not needed.

edit: Readme files updated.

Yeah, that is wild.  I did a double-take when you wrote an hour, but I tend to forget most of the time I'm sizing down.  Really kills the fps when you're resizing to a smaller frame.

It's amazing what a difference a rich source makes though.  Often when I encode a DVD9 using HC I'll shrink it to DVD5 with DVDShrink to test burn an erasable disc. Just to make sure there's no stutter in the video or something else weird.  Usually even the erasable DVD5s look great!! A tad more gloss with the DVD9 after upscaling though. I'm thinking DVD9 blanks should start to get a lot cheaper as people get set top boxes.  I'd like to see them come down to < 50 cents a disc.
