General Software Discussion / Re: Antivirus-less setup
« Last post by tomos on September 28, 2012, 07:23 AM »
Does anyone here run their primary machine without a resident (always on) antivirus?

what other security measures do you take  (if any) ?

I would say in the last 8 or 9 years, my Anti-Virus has found one 'true'-positive - and even that was a bit of a fail cause it (AV) was completley closed down by the drive-by download that 'installed' the file (that I then manually killed/removed).

Point being,
I think I could and would survive quite well without anti-virus; with windows firewall. I also have Winpatrol pro - I'd keep that, it has been helpful keeping me informed what just installed software is trying to get up to.

Tangentially about Google dropping stuff, they're also dropping the classic doc formats. So this is a big move in the strategy game.

I noticed that lately with spreadsheets (unfortunately their xlsx support is not as good >:( )

Actually not to snark, but I think he's gonna have 400,000+ for his college, because of the matching grant by that foundation, will college really cost 400,000 per year by then?  :o

the money thing is very confusing there - they say that it will be matched by xyz trust up to 250,000. At first I presumed that this was for their foundation but it looks like all that money is for him. I dont know will the extra 250 grand go to him as well o_0

He can party a lot  :-\

  • What's the difference between dynamite and nitro glycerin?

there is/was a great wiki site that compared similar stuff and gave an in depth table-list of differences e.g.
Margarine vs. Butter
I remember editing it to say butter tastes better ;-)

But I cant find it, I even had email contact with the site but cant find that either :-\

Maybe someone who knows how to use search might find it - I keep getting compare wikis or compare prices :-(

Well, now I'll show my noob qualities again :D

No-one told me I had to type in cmd as well as the 'dir etc etc' in the run dialogue

:)

It's just getting easier all the time ;-)

thanks everyone  :)

Re the command window
-
I just typed:
Win+R
then:
cmd

Will that not work for everyone?

There really is no need to go that far. Just hit Win+R and type the one line command in the box, and click OK.

I had to go that far, because I kept getting an error message in Win XP & Win7
[windows cant find 'dir' ...] when using Target's suggestion anyways:

dir C:\folderx\*.* /on /s > c:\folderx\list.txt

it worked fine in the command window

And not so exciting, but some very interesting moments: 'Caine Monroy, Visiting Lecturer of Entrepreneurship at USC' (University of Southern California).
That's four videos, I mostly just let them run in the background myself.

Shows footage of first visit to the arcade by Nirvan (the filmmaker); interview with Cain, his dad and Nirvan. Nirvan is an interesting guy, talks a bit about the going viral experience--towards the end of the third video I think (would have been nice to hear more though).

Okay, super followup video here showing loads of wonderful stuff made by kids all over the world, inspired by Cain's Arcade.

They started the Imagination Foundation
The Imagination Foundation formed three days after the Caine’s Arcade short film was posted online with a mission to find, foster, and fund creativity and entrepreneurship in more kids like Caine. We received a $250,000 Matching Challenge Grant from the Goldhirsh Foundation two days later to help build the Imagination Foundation.

Amongst other things, they are organising a Global Cardboard Challenge with events all over the world on October 6th

I find it difficult to believe that this has all been screwed up entirely by accident.

not saying your theory couldn't be true, but all it would take is bad management--pretty common--and poor communication between the different departments. (Maybe an arrogant secret service and a resentful police force?) Add lack of experience at 'this kind of thing'. And you're got, eh, porridge anyone?

This one is definitely silly humour. It really does makes me laugh out loud -
but I see it has 25 dislikes vs. 16 likes, so YMMV ;)

(Incidentally: uploaded by one of the members of the 70's band, 'The Jags'. Anyone remember the hit I got your number, written on the back of my hand? I loved that track...)

^ thanks Tao, but I dont want to ask them to install anything, even portable soft.

============

@Target,
this is my first ever batch file & I'm pretty chuffed about it :-)
So, I'm happy to learn some more!

get them to bring up the run dialog (WIN+R), then paste in 'dir C:\folderx\*.* /on /s > c:\folderx\list.txt' and press ok

do you mean open a command window first? (the fact I'm not sure there shows you my level of expertise)
Okay, after getting error messages, I opened the command window.
I cant paste into a command window - or can I?
Yes I can ;) learning a lot today :)

and it works

I've already sent the guy a dropbox link with the batch file - if that doesnt work I send him this (I do have the folder path).
Thanks!

Living Room / Re: It's about ... oldish films
« Last post by tomos on September 26, 2012, 06:58 AM »
I saw 'Die Sehnsucht Veronic Voss' (just 'Veronica Voss' in English) lately. I knew nothing about it beforehand except that it's considered one of the German classics and I'd heard the directors name.

Initially I thought it was from the 50's, it's B/W, it's set in 1955, and -I'm not too well up on the terminology- but it's filmed in a film noir style. I found a few things odd and eventually realised it cant be - looked it up then - it was made in 1982. Still qualifies as 'oldish' I guess :)

About a once famous actress who fell out of favour after the war, is decidedly screwed up, meets a sports reporter who hasnt a clue who she is -
and I wont tell you any more - I prefer to see films myself knowing as little as possible about them. It's a bit of a 'Krimi', not high on suspense but very intriguing. I'm no critic, but there's some great acting and great photography.

I'd highly recommend it anyway.
Seems it's part of a 'thematic' trilogy and the others are supposed to be even better.
So I look forward to seeing them someday.
BRD Trilogyw my wiki links never work :-(

... may be good to post a video so you can hear it ;-)

the music often has a raw edge,
I like that myself, YMMV.

A nice video here, good track as well --> NSFW (nekkidness - nothing offensive though imo)

youtube playlist for the album is here

I haven't really listened properly to the album, but like what I've heard. Lots of influence from punk/pop late 70's/early 80's.

Looks good, and is well written

General Software Discussion / Re: In search of ... RAMdisk opinions
« Last post by tomos on September 25, 2012, 03:01 AM »
Do note that you shouldn't disable the pagefile unless you always have enough free physical memory, even under high load, or you at least know the implications of what turning off the pagefile means. Windows doesn't really like running out of memory (but at least it doesn't go about OOM-killing processes like Linux does by default).

Well, I just disabled - I thimk - the pagefile.  Don't see any significant RAM usage above and beyond the norm.  But, then, I'm just doing forum posts at the moment.  However, I normally have a bunch of stuff loaded at boot, so the actual program load is pretty hefty.  Barring major malfunctions, I'll try this for a week or two (2), then reactivate the pagefile on a RAMdisk, see if there's a performance hit - or any other significant difference for that matter.
Let us know how you get on barney :)

Re the Pagefile:
it's (supposed to be) for when you run out of memory.
Therefore it seems counterproductive to use up some of that same memory in order to create a pagefile. Cause then you'll be forcing computer to use the pagefile sooner than normally otherwise necessary.
Unless, of course as said above, the machine is 32bit and has memory over & above whatever the limit is for 32bit

Thanks for that very helpful response Tinman.

I'll have another go today at burning that data disc.

Advertising in paid software is not on though - I'll say that directly to them if I contact them. Also, that if it can be disabled this should be stated clearly beside/under the ads. I'll put it on my todo list - doesnt mean it'll get done though ;-)
Ironically I just started both apps and didnt get any popups.
5619
The album is available, like the link says: pay what you want:
http://www.amandapal...p/pay-what-you-want/

for a download, she says $1 covers the covers, so I guess it would be nice to give more.
I paid for one (FLAC) and also got a free download (320/mp3) to save me converting if necessary :-)

I forgot to say:

Burning Studio 11 and Ashampoo Music Studio 4, (which I won, but would not recommend), when launched, they open a popup (I think it's one per day), advertising (so far) their Uninstaller.

Not nice behaviour for paid software - even if it is cheap... I dont think they did this in previous versions (?)
5621
If their AV will block the download, it's likely it would also eat the .bat file, no matter what method you use to get it to him.

very good point - probably also the case if he creates it himself.
Will report back,
thanks for the brainstorming all
5622
@tomos
I have just mailed the code as simple text-mail, first to my gmail account, and from there back to my Danish account. No problems at all.

sounds good - do you have an AV checking your incoming mails? (makes me realise I could check it that way here too and downloaded mail is checked by AV )
5623
That's maybe worth a try - at least my email address wont get in trouble. But I was presuming:

1) their AV will pick up on it
2) dropbox may be blocked anyway

But seeing as I wont get in trouble directly, I'll give it a try
5624
good idea, but they're on XP so cannot open :(

7zip  ;)

I know, but again: corporate environment, I dont want to ask them to 'install' software - even portable. I'm pushing it with the whole batch file thing already.
Put it this way - it's in both our interests if they can get this file list, but it's a much bigger help/priority for me than it is for them. Hence the attempt to keep it simple for them...
5625
I found that sending things like that in a .rar file always seems to slip through. ;-)

good idea, but they're on XP so cannot open :(

I was thinking of sending it as PDf but might just go with the screenshot to be on the safe side - more work for him, but it is short anyway (I wanted to keep it simple).
