one cannot access the internet from these machines, no email - for safety reasons.

Sorry. I assumed that they had internet access since people can FTP files to and from them.

How about an OS on a USB stick? Reboot the machine into the USB OS and then access the files from the HDD that way. :P

Sure, we have the Prius, but it's mostly a gimmick.  They put that out there for the people who make an extra effort to save the environment.

Don't you mean it's for people that want to make a show of pretending to save the environment?

I've never even heard of them before, but at 70+ miles per gallon according to wikipedia, and petrol being about 6 euro per gallon here, I'd be willing to make some sacrafices (are they really that slow to take off though lol)

Don't forget to calculate how much extra they charge you for the "Hybrid" technology into your "savings" plan.

Last I heard, the "Hybrid" model Prius costs something like $10,000 more than the non-hybrid model Prius. Do you think you'll save $10,000 in gasoline over the lifetime of the vehicle? Things like that make Stoic Joker right when he says people are just pretending to save the environment.

Also, Electric Cars save the environment in much the same way that buying your meat at the grocery store saves animals. Isn't one of the major environmental problems with coal power? How are you going to afford to charge your car when electricity rates skyrocket due to environmental laws limiting carbon dioxide emissions?

In the eyes of environmentalists, electricity (since the vast majority of it comes from coal) is just as much the enemy as oil.

Probably not very helpful ideas:

Wonder if you could set up a linux distro on a VM and use something like dropbox.

Or you could always e-mail the files to yourself...

Almost every single My Space page used to do this. I wouldn't know if they still do since I've been fortunate enough to not touch that site for a few years now.

My favorite was Japan though. "overweight people taking up too much space" :D

And is it any wonder?

It makes sense, though - just because you're an excellent programmer doesn't mean you're excellent at, say, the English language... and you do get, what is it, 100rep or so just by linking the account.

I don't see how reputation is relevant to proficiency. I thought it was more about being able to trust someone to be a constructive and helpful member of the site. You don't need to be an expert in much of anything, except perhaps good manners and etiquette for that.

Also, not sure where you get the figure for 100 rep for linking the account. My new account(s) have exactly 0 rep. Er, well, I guess you start at 1? I can't remember for sure.

Dang. Whenever I think I've finally come up with a good Coding Snack idea it always already exists or would be better achieved some other way.

I had actually thought of loading them into an editor but didn't want to go through the bother of installing one. But now that you both have mentioned Audacity I now remember that I already have that "installed" in my PortableApps.

Thanks!

Case closed, I guess.

Finished Programs / SOLVED: Play two audio files at the same time.
« Last post by Deozaan on March 10, 2011, 03:37 PM »
Hi folks,

Last night I ended up with 2 copies of the same song with some minor differences between them.

File 1 was 128kbps but was ~40 seconds longer.
File 2 was 256kbps but ~40 seconds shorter.

I wanted to compare them (yeah, I realize this is probably not the best way to do that) so I opened each up in a separate audio player and then spent half the song fiddling with the Pause/Play buttons trying to sync them up.

What I'd like is a utility that allows you to select two audio files, queue them (separately) to a specific part of the song (in case the audio doesn't start at the same time in the tracks), and have a play button that starts both files at the same time, which avoids the short delay when you have to move your mouse from one to the other.

Is this stupid? Is it hard? Is it crazy enough to do anyway?

Other potential uses:

Just to see how two different songs sound layered on top of each other.
???
Profit!

Yeah, it's strange and confusing. Basic profile information like e-mail address, OpenIDs, etc. transferred over, but "Member since x date" and reputation, etc. all got reset per site.

And that kind of sucks, since some of the basic privileges like commenting or posting links, etc. have to be earned through reputation. If I was a well-known, reputable user (e.g. over 9000! rep) on Stack Overflow and suddenly wanted to chime in with a helpful answer in (e.g.) Mathematics, then my ability to do so as a new member to the Mathematics subsection would be very limited.

It's kind of like living with your parents, needing to earn their trust to do anything, except the amount of trust they have for you varies depending on which room you happen to be in when you ask them.

EDIT: What problem are you having with the link?  My problem was that it said that it was creating a new account, so I got a bit paranoid about losing my rep/accounts.  But I went ahead and did it, and it worked.

Yeah, it told me it was creating a new account, so I also got paranoid about losing reputation and badges and stuff like that. I went ahead and did it, and I lost reputation and badges and stuff like that on all sites except the one I already had an account on, Stack Overflow. Or, in other words, each sub-site got a "new" account and no reputation or badges or stuff like that got transferred over.

So now I'm not sure if it was supposed to do that or not.

So... Do they really expect me to create a new account for each subdomain?

I have an account with Stack Overflow. But if I try to login to Stack Exchange then it tells me my Open ID is new and it says I'm going to be creating a new account.

EDIT: Found this http://blog.stackove...-network-auto-login/ but I'm still trying to figure out how to get it to work.

I just recently started using Stack Overflow this week, and I'd seen mention of Stack Exchange there, so I didn't know this was new. Thanks for the info!

Also, I love the surprise ending (which I personally interpret to mean the final picture in the blog, not the boring stuff about shares and investors)!

Bottom line: Apple is what I am grudgingly endorsing (it really kills me to say that!) for now - no learning curve and few pratfalls to worry about...

If someone asked me for a recommendation for a tablet, I'd say wait a little while longer.

Apple do make some good hardware and software, but I can't recommend Apple to people I care about simple on principle due to their business practices.

Sure, Apple's trains may run on time, but good luck getting toilet paper when you need it!

I'm running Chrome 10.x and the star is on the Right side of the Omnibox, but doesn't work as described.

I do have that "round thingy" on the left side, which looks like the Earth to me (the Americas are most visible). And yes, it creates a shortcut as described.

Waffles are American?

I thought they were Belgian Waffles.

Kind of like how French Fries are French, and Canadian Bacon is from Canada. ;)

AFAIK that site is basically an online phone book. So it only lists what's public in the dead-tree edition phone book. I didn't realize you wanted to find info for unlisted people/numbers.
