Unpacking a ZIP file on the server does not automatically cause any danger. How?
Kinda depends on what's in the file...

...Sure the server isn't in any danger (unless you count reputation) but the visitors..?

printing can be tricky if using a "soft printer" (pcl in the driver), but there are workarounds or you can simply map a LPT port (old school). Good luck!
Right idea, but wrong direction... The Host based (or soft printer) drivers that do most of the image processing on the computer are the ones that don't use PCL (i.e. Network printers all use PCL). Also, if dealing with a tricky config, it's best to grab the PCL5 version of the driver (Avoid PCL6 like a plague).

Port capturing/mapping a network printer so a legacy application can find it on LPT1 is a highly recommended and stable fix (so you nailed that part :)).

Any chance that could be done with .asp also (e.g. zip2asp)?

ICS is disabled by default, and the only unscheduled reboots in the last 10 years on the (approx 20) Windows servers I manage were due to either hardware failures or power outages that outlasted the UPS.
Do you have a clean & untweaked XP-SP2 you can confirm this on, or official docs? :P - I'm almost tempted to do a test install in vmware (damn insomnia!), but it'd make a helluva lot sense not to have it enabled by default.
I don't really need them, but yes I've got a vanilla XP SP3 VPC I use for testing & such. While the Windows firewall & ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) are both part of the same service (binary) they are entirely different parts. When ICS is enabled (which actually requires 2 network interfaces...), the box it is enabled on becomes a (low tech) DHCP server for the other clients that are/will be using the shared connection.

...I'm guessing I can safely stop here (to avoid looking pedantic), as I'm reasonably sure you can guess the rest. ;)

Okay, so first day back to work after vacation...I decide to give (the new and improved) PC a shot in a live production environment. *Sigh* ...The reporting function (Open/Save) is a train wreck. And the rush job bit me as the SNMP community name is playing Peek-A-Boo at odd times - that I'm still trying to clarify.

So... I'll be working on getting that straightened out over the next few day.

...I love it when a plan comes together, just in time to slam into the wall... :)

Most of the Access based "Programs" I've seen keep the main database (.mdb) fine in the program folder in program files (or root of C: depending on age). Windows 7 doesn't like (allow) write access to the program files folder.

The Access97 part is fine in program files it's just a db engine (of sorts). Try either reseting the NTFS permissions on the programs main folder, or try moving the program's main install folder to your Documents folder. Either method should allow the program to run.

Beyond that (and for future reference) clarify what exactly "Does not run correctly" means.
Does the program's main window open?
Does it throw an error?
which error, and when?

The more details you give ... the better your chances of getting an answer that works.

This reminds me of "The Typing of the Dead" video game (for PC). It was a FPS that required you to type the word on the zombie's chest to kill it.

Is it sex and power though or just rape and power?
Absolutely not, rape puts force in the entirely wrong direction. The power which I refer to is about a draw or attraction. Some one that has has presence, that can walk into the room and command attention without saying a word. They carry themselves (e.g. their posture is perfect but not exaggerated) "well", which implies confidence, and tends to make one look better (gender is irrelevant).

It's the subtle sensuality and grace that disarms without force...(yet are powered/driven by baser instincts)...and makes one alluring or, sexy (hence the "pursued" is very much in control).

It could even be as simple as creating an entire porn movie and just removing the sex scene and the language and dressing them up in different outfits. It's still based on the same concept because sex didn't disappear or become more intimate.
That has already been done (complete with the bad acting)...They're called Soap-Operas.

Another interesting point is the direct correlation between sex and power (predatory <-lure/allure-> sensuality). Granted more obvious in the animal kingdom - but we are animals (just rather deluded ones)...

I won't even ask, "Do you think it could get any worse?" since I asked that every year in this past decade and from start to finish, it got worse!
So... From this I can infer that you believe that the world wide economic crash was caused by some grand karmic debt that you dragged us all into...?

...That just seem a bit harsh even by my standards (which for the most part don't actually exist) ;)

Things can always get worse, the question is will they. One of my favorite sayings (Murphy's Law fan that I am) is that no matter how close you get to attaining your goal, there is always plenty of time for things to go horribly wrong. That not withstanding ... I refuse to give up.

However I am cautiously optimistic about 2010 as we seem to be slowly crawling out of the abyss that 07-08 (and most of 09) dropped us in.

then this report is basically a fantasy.
...And a stunningly retarded one at that.

Sex and/or sex appeal is used to sell everything from breath mints to cell phones. Fashion models flocking around some grinning schmuck (like mongrel dogs to carrion) because his breath is just so minty fresh they're all just dieing to what? (f...) play Parcheesi with him?!? - Please...

The babblingly idiotic assumption that "removing" nudity from a film means there is no sex in it is beyond absurd. It just means that its that much easier to get it past the ratings board. ...and at some point you'll need to waste 5 minutes watching two lumps romp about under a blanket.

Now here's a question for the film industry ... Why is that having the beauty of the human (female) form so horrifyingly taboo that it must be rated R or worse, but depicting a woman getting rapped and beaten to death in an ally is (for some demented reason) quality (prime time) entertainment?!?

Okay, Last minute (rush job) update ... Added the option to save an alternate default network address range and SNMP Community name to the Config.ini file. Also add a Advanced Options menu item to the Printer Scanning menu to make it easier to get to (since the hot-key isn't behaving reliably). It was originally intended as an EasterEgg, but has grown to be more important so it was time to bring it into the daylight.

Is this normal?  I changed the toner in a HP 2300 Laserjet today.  I did a page config sheet before and after the change.  When I ran the Print Countster scan, it added a page in the total page count column.

I just rescanned it a couple of times and it didn't add anymore to the count.
Is it normal for internal (report) prints to be counted as pages? Yes. There is actually quite a bit of overlap in the definitions when it comes to HP as they tend to use the terms "Page Count" and Engine Cycles" interchangeably (even tho they're not). This is why there tends to be a disparity between the Configuration page & the Usage Page on most of the newer machines.
Engine Cycles is the number of times the device has gone through a print cycle...(regardless of media size)...without a critical error.

(True) Page Count (Tallied on the Usage Page) gives a more realistic Page Count "Mileage" as it takes into account the size of the media used. Envelopes = .3 pages, Legal = 1.3 pages, and the baseline 8.5x11 = 1.0 pages.

On the older machines, you could actually roll the count back-wards, by printing less than 10 pages and restarting the machine. Because the device only committed the count to permanent memory of it had printed more then 10 pages in a gives session (period of uptime).

(It occurs to me in retrospect, that much of this has nothing to do with the original question...it's more "short highlights" from a caned speech I end up repeating at work. But it good info none the less so I'll leave it be)

I just tried to open the Administrative window using the Ctrl + Alt + F8 and nothing happens.  I am on build 175.  I tried it on one of the earlier builds and it didn't work either, I just forgot to report it.
Blast, I'd actually gotten so used to that one, I (sort of) forgot about it. There is a glitch in the main app frames message loop, that causes the hot keys to get ignored if the ListView control has focus. If you click on the TaskBar item to minimize the app, and then click it again to restore the app, the main window will regain focus and the hot keys will work.

Is it also possible to retain the IP range that was last used?  When the program is closed and re-popened it goes back the original default settings.
Hm... I've been torn on that one for some time. If the range is saved to the .ini file, it will have an adverse effect on portability (assuming it's takes with). But there are times where an alternative IP address range could also be advantageous. This also brings (back) up the (if/how to) query & display multiple adapters Can-O-Worms.

Give me some time to mull over how best to split that hair...and I'll get back to you.

« Last post by Stoic Joker on December 29, 2009, 01:52 PM »
Okay... (I'll start with the bad news) ...I was unable to refine a reliable method of acquiring the IP configuration method. This is due to one of (if not the) primary objectives of Page Countster being Speed. In that interest any data queried for had to be in a fixed Industry Standard position to eliminate the need for extensive validation/confirmation/triple checking loops to make absolutely sure that we actually did get back what we thought we asked for before going on to the next target. It is still listed as an active (plausible) feature request and may yet be implemented after I have time to do the extensive testing necessary to confirm the type of values returned by the various manufactures devices/models, etc. [/end of bad news]

What I have done is tidy up some of the programs general behavior regarding:
Open report handling so the user has the option of closing the existing report or combining it with the currently displayed data.

Drag-N-Drop has also been added (and should have been a long time ago...) so that reports can be opened by dropping them into the program's window.

Fixed column sorting bugg that would cause the program to freeze if contents was sorted by the toner levels columns.

Made minor changes to scanning engine to mitigate the handle leak issue when running multiple scans on large (5,000+ node) networks. It ain't perfect (yet), but as long as the (currently being scanned) scanned address block is kept at/under 6,000 addresses, it shouldn't hang any more.

Fixed OK button on About dialog - Seems it had developed a tendency to play Peek-A-Boo now and then.

So... Currently there is no plan to integrate (via dedicated page) Page Countster into the company's website, hence any future builds (based on user feedback/schedule permitting) will be released here at DC as development continues. The current (Final for Contest) release build of Page Countster is v1.0.0.175 ... and is available via link in OP.

I also didn“t manage it till now to run it on XP.
Hm... So if you can run it, and Perry can run it, that makes me the odd man out... 'cause I still got no (text) luck.

Please bear with me because I'm only thinking out loud hear... But the last time I ran into something that was supposed to run just fine but didn't...was also the first (and only) time I tried doing something in C#. I lost a ton of time troubleshooting the code, when the issue was actually the (new for C# "feature") code level permissions checking. I don't know if the 08 MFC (which I believe you're using) has that "feature" included, but it may be worth exploring later if/when you have time.
